Proverbs are popular around the world. They are shorter expressions that usually pass on some type of wisdom. Many proverbs give advice on how to live. Some proverbs are hundreds of years old, but they are still used today.
The English language has a very large number of proverbs. One is “Better late than never”. This means it is better to do something late than never to do it. Another is “Two heads are better than one”. This means a second person can often help one person to do something. And “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a common saying. It means that eating apples every day helps you keep healthy. So the person will not get sick and won’t have to see a doctor.
In different situations, people use proverbs to express special meanings. For example, my son is just like his father in many ways. We often say the two of them prove the proverb that “The apple does not fall from the tree”. I also tell my children “Two wrongs do not make a right”. You should not do something bad just because someone did the same to you. Some people often worry about what they will do in a situation that might happen in the future. We could tell them “Do not cross that bridge until you come to it”.

Can you understand this sentence? If you can’t, don’t feel too bad: neither can the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Netspeak: the language of computerized communication found on Internet. To newcomers, it can look like a completely foreign language. So, what is the “translation” of the sentence above? My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York; it’s great.
Schoolteachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming the English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes can be seen in students’ writing. They fear the language could become corrupted(面目全非的).
Everyone should just relax, say linguists(语言学家). They believe Netspeak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the University of Wales, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing has been picked up again. However, Netspeakers do agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write Standard English. Learning to write proper English is a must for their future.
Perhaps we should give teenagers a little more trust anyway. Erin, age 12, says, “I wouldn’t use text language in my homework. Texting is just for fun.”

However, I couldn’t learn Chinese well, even the simplest sentence. It is not because I was lazy, but because I had no confidence to learn the most complex language in the world. Besides this, once I moved to China, I lived in Shanghai. It is an international city
But after a year in China I found many expats(侨民) spoke Chinese. I felt uncomfortable because so many Chinese people could speak English while I couldn’t even speak the most basic Chinese. To face the challenge, I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn’t start earlier.
In the two years since starting to learn I have made great progress. Learning to speak Chinese isn’t as difficult as I once expected. The most challenging thing is listening since Chinese people talk at such a speed. I can’t always understand what’s been said, but my weekly online language exchanges help with this. Learning Chinese not only helps me in day-to-day life, but deepens(加深) my cultrual understanding of such a great country. So, to all my non-Chinese friends I say this, don’t be afraid, face the challenge and be confident.

Here in China, workers have longer lunch breaks, which gives them enough time to take a short nap. So Chinese people usually use lunchtime to rest. I often see office workers rest their heads on their desks. The room turns into a quiet “bedroom”. Once, I even saw workers in a restaurant taking short naps as well. This is also very common for students in China. After lunch, they will go back to their dormitories (宿舍) or classrooms to take a nap. Chinese people believe a short nap at noon can help them feel more energetic in the afternoon.
In Britain, this activity is quite uncommon. British students usually have a one-hour lunch break. Instead of napping, they fill that time by playing sports or talking with friends.
Most workers in Britain don't get the chance to nap. They generally have short lunch breaks-between 30 minutes to an hour. There is not enough time to have a nap. Because of the shortness of their lunch breaks, it is common for people to work through lunch or just finish their lunch at their desk.

Why do zebras have stripes (条纹)? Scientists might have the answer. They say the stripes seem to confuse flies (苍蝇). They are less possible to hurt zebras.
Scientists did a new study. They studied horses. They studied zebras. They also studied horses dressed as zebras. The scientists learned that stripes might help to stop insects. The study also helped find out why.
Martin How is a scientist. He worked on the study. He said they watched horseflies. They watched how horseflies acted around nine horses and three zebras. Horseflies flew around the animals and then more flies landed on the horses. Fewer flies landed on the zebras. The scientists wanted to know why. So they did a test. They put black, white and zebra-stripes coat as much as the others.
The stripes did not confuse flies from far away, the scientists said. It only worked when the flies got close. The flies couldn’t see very well. That might be the reason. Mr. How said that zebras come from parts of the world where flies are a bigger problem. They carry bad diseases. Horses are different from zebras. They have lived in different environments. Diseases from flies are not so bad there, he said.
He added that this might not be the full story. Scientists think stripes could have other uses. They could help zebras hide. They could even be part of how zebras communicate with each other.

The bricks are the building blocks(块) of the house. Your body has building blocks too. They’re called cells. The bodies of plants and animals are very different from one another, but they all have one thing in common—all are made up of cells. There are many different kinds of cells in your body. Each kind of cell has its own job, such as muscle(肌肉) cells, bone cells, and blood cells.
Cells work together to keep your body alive. A group of similar cells that work together to do the same job form a tissue (组织). The human body is made of different kinds of tissues. Muscle tissue and nerve(神经) tissue are two kinds of tissues.
An organ is a group of different kinds of tissues that work together to carry out a certain job. Each kind of organ in your body has a special job to do. Some examples of organs are your stomach, heart and skin. Like cells and tissues, organs work in groups too. A group of organs that work together to do a certain job is called an organ system (系统). The first lady encouraged Chinese students to aim high and get a good education. At Chengdu No.7 High School, she told students that having humble roots(出身卑微)doesn’t matter as long as you have perseverance(毅力). Obama said her family was not rich. Like many Chinese students, her parents had big dreams for her. She felt the weight of her parents’ sacrifices(牺牲)on her shoulders and worked hard to make them proud. Persevering was not easy, though.Sometimes she had to wake up at 4:30 am and study late into the night“But whenever I got tired or discouraged... I would remember something my mother always told me. She said: ‘A good education is something that no one can take away from you.
Mrs. Obama also encouraged Chinese students to study abroad to broaden their horizons(开阔视野)in a speech at Peking University.“ AS the Chinese saying goes:It is better to travel 10.000 miles than to read 10.000 books.” she said. It's not enough to get good grades in school. It’s also important to have real experience with languages, cultures and societies that are different from your own, she noted. Studying overseas can also benefit future international relations. It can help young people from different countries work together to solve shared problems like climate change, Obama said.
