Many animals have tails(尾巴). They use their tails to do many different things. Some animals use their tails as flyswatters(苍蝇拍). Have you ever seen a cow shake its tail back and forth? It’s driving away the flies. Horses also use their tails in the same way.
Some animals hang by their tails. Monkeys often do this. Then they can use all four of their paws for other things, such as eating. Monkeys use their tails as a “hanger”, which can help them hang in the trees and climb trees. Animals that live in the water use their tails to help them swim. A fish uses its tail from side to side. A kangaroo(袋鼠)has a large, useful tail. It’s like a chair. The kangaroo stands on its tail to rest. It helps the kangaroo stand well. The tail is also good for landing. This is important because an adult kangaroo can jump as far as 15 feet at a time. A fox has a big tail. This is a good tail to have on cold nights. The fox can put its tail over its nose and paws while it sleeps. The tail can keep the fox warm.
Some animals don’t keep their tails with them at all times. If their enemies(敌人)catch them, their tails will break off(折断). Don’t worry. They will soon grow a new tail. How amazing(令人惊异的)it is!

While Shiny’s great grandfather went to sleep during the race, Smily’s great grandfather won the race by slowly walking towards the finish line.
Smily said, “If your great grandfather didn’t go to sleep, my great granddad might never win. So his win was not a real win.”
The next day there was a notice in the jungle(丛林)newspaper. It said that there would be a race and the winner would win many prizes. The race started from the bear’s house. From there, the runners had to cross the river. But most of the animals could not both run fast and swim fast. So they didn’t know what to do. Shiny and Smily made a plan.
Shiny ran, while Smily was sitting on his back. He and other animals, like the deer, reached the river side at the same time. But they saw the swift water and stood there because they were worried. None of them liked the idea of crossing the river. Smily quickly got into the water and Shiny sat on his back. Smily started swimming. Soon they reached the other side of the river. Shiny got down from Smily’s back and Smily climbed on Shiny’s back again. Shiny ran fast. They reached the finish line first.

I live in a beautiful city. Many visitors come to my city every year because there are so many colorful peacocks (孔雀) here.
The peacocks mostly live on the grassland of Dongfeng Square. Visitors usually throw food to them, but they don’t think about at all whether the food is good or not. Some of the peacocks became ill, and some even died eating the bad food given by visitors.
I’m sure most of the visitors who throw food to the peacocks really like the bird, but they don’t realize that they may be doing them harm (伤害). Visitors should be told that what they have done is harmful to the birds, and this kind of thing must be stopped.
Perhaps we can build some small shops beside Dongfeng Square to sell peacock food. For us every person, it is our duty to give more love to these beautiful birds to look after them carefully.
Yours,
Wang Yang

During the trip, he was provided with a supply of his treats including bamboo, apples, pears, carrots, cooked sweet potatoes.
Before he left Washington, thousands of people joined ‘Bye Bye, Bei Bei’. During the activity, many people were sad for Bei Bei’s leaving. They hoped he would love his new home in China, and they hoped to visit him there some day.
Su, Bei Bei’s new keeper in China, who majored in animal medicine at Jilin Agricultural Science and Technology University, has worked at the base since she completed her university in 2016. “I feel very nervous when I receive the task because Bei Bei has received a lot of attention. But I think I can do well as I had a lot of experience in panda management,” Su said. “I have taken care of about10 pandas before.”
Su said she had prepared a lot for his arrival. She has planned to spend two weeks allowing Bei Bei to get to know her voice. She will also train him how to stand and sit. “Pandas like sweet food. Bei Bei has been rewarded with sugarcane after cooperating in a physical checkup, for example, after he has placed one leg on equipment to enable blood to be drawn,” Su said. “Instead of sugarcane, we will feed Bei Bei with honey as a reward,” she added.
Her daily routine includes cleaning his den and feeding the panda four times during the daytime. At night, Bei Bei may wake two or three times to eat and then fall asleep, so Su will set up an app on her phone to monitor him.
Pandas are native to Chengdu. So we believe that Bei Bei will get used to living here quickly.

Scientists Adam Galinsky and Hajo Adams report that there is science behind our style. In their research (研究), Galinsky and Adams had some participants wear white coats similar to the ones scientists or doctors wear. Other participants wore their normal clothes. In the experiment, participants saw cards with different-colored words on them. They had to say the color of the word they saw. The people wearing the white coats said the correct color more often. They thought that the white coats made the participants feel more confident and careful.
Fashion blogger Jennifer Quirk believes that our clothes greatly affect how we feel about ourselves. She says that people should pay more attention to what they wear. For example, we should choose a look that makes us feel more creative and happy. One way to do this at work is to “dress up for the exciting job we want”. Another way is to wear special clothes that mean something to us. For example, Quirk wears one pair of shoes to all her important meetings. They are her “lucky” shoes.
Our clothes are “like our second skin”. The clothes we wear can affect our behavior (行为). They can also tell the world something about us.

②I will tell you some of the most important American rules of table manners. When you sit down to eat, you should place the napkin across your laps. You should never talk with your mouth full and should chew with your mouth closed. If someone asks you a question while you are chewing the food before answering. You should never drop scraps on the table, instead place them on a spare plate. Salt and pepper, but you should taste your food before adding any. Only put food on someone else’s plate if they ask for it and if they say they do not want anything else to eat or drink then you will not give them anything else. Do not use your knife or fork to point at others because it is considered rude.
③In China I know it is rude to point with your chopsticks. It is common practice to place food into a friends bowl and to put drink in their glass even after they have said they do not want any more. It is fine to drop the scraps onto the table. Though salt and pepper are not always on the table, vinegar and soy sauce.

They say music is universal, and it seems to be true since wherever we go, we see people listening, playing or dancing to it. We tend to think that music is larger than our cultural differences and shows the deeper connections between us.
But according to a recent study published in the journal Current Biology, music doesn’t speak to everyone. There is a condition, the researchers argue, called “musical anhedonia (音乐快感丧失)”. They say that those who have this condition lack the ability to experience pleasure from music.
For the study, 30 people listened to the same, mostly classical music pieces. They were then asked to complete a questionnaire on how they felt about the music. At the same time, the researchers measured their heart rate and skin reaction, which are considered physiological (生理的) measures of emotion.
According to the researchers, most of the people in the study got pleasure from the music. They had a quicker heartbeat and sweated (出汗) more. However, a small number had very little and even no pleasant feeling while they listened. These people had none or very few of the physical signs the others in the study experienced.
The researchers say that this means people have different abilities to enjoy music and that “there are people who specifically can’t enjoy music at all”, study author Josep Marco-Pallares of the University of Barcelona in Spain told Live Science.
To study the condition further, another group of scientists, at Columbia University, US, researched brain activities. They found that the key is the blood flow (血流量) to the reward system in the brain.
“People who got less pleasure from music had comparatively lower blood flow to areas involved in the reward system of the brain when listening to music,” reported the Daily Mail.
The lower blood flow makes it more likely that the brain’s “reward system” will be inactive. Thus, it will release(释放) less of the “pleasure chemical” dopamine (多巴胺). As a result, people get less pleasure from music.
If the research is correct, according to National Public Radio, there are simply people who just don’t get music. They may get pleasure from many things, but a good tune (曲调) isn’t one of them.

His hiccups began one Sunday lunch time and continued day and night for two weeks. After the first week, Harry's parents took him to hospital, but it took another week for the doctors to cure his attack.
Harry, who is now back at school, described what happened to him.
“When I began to hiccup, I drank a glass of water but that didn't do any good. That evening I had hiccups every four seconds. We tried everything to stop them. I held my breath and drank cold drinks. My father even tried to give me a shock but that didn't work either.”
After a week of sleepless nights, he went to hospital. The doctors took an X-ray of his chest but they couldn't find anything wrong.
“They gave me some medicine and my hiccups slowed down, but it was another week before the medicine worked completely and my hiccups stopped.”
