I ran into a stranger as he passed by. "Oh, excuse me, please" was my reply. He said: "Please, excuse me too; I wasn't even watching for you."

We were very polite, this stranger and I. We went on our way and we said goodbye. But at home a different story is told-how we treat our loved ones, young and old.

Later that day, when I was cooking the evening meal, my daughter stood beside me very still. When I turned, I nearly knocked her down. "Move out of the way." I said with a frown. She   walked away, her little heart was broken. I didn't realize how cruelly I'd spoken.

While I lay awake in bed that evening, my husband said to me, "While dealing with a stranger, common courtesy(彬彬有礼) you use, but the children you love, you seem to abuse. Look on the kitchen floor and you'll find some flowers there by the door. Those are the flowers she brought for you. She picked them herself: pink, yellow and blue. She stood quietly not to spoil the surprise, and you never saw the tears in her eyes." By this time, I felt very small, and my tears began to fall. I quietly went and knelt down by her bed. "Wake up, little girl," I said. "Are these flowers you picked for me?" She smiled: "I found them out by the tree. I picked them because they're pretty like you. I knew you'd like them, especially the blue."

I said: "Daughter, I'm sorry for the way I acted today. I should not have yelled at you that way."

She said: "Oh Mom, that's okay. I love you anyway."

I said: "Daughter, I love you too. And I do like the flowers, especially the blue."

Are you aware that: If you die tomorrow, the company that you are working for could easily replace you in a matter of days. But the family you leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into our work than into our families-an unwise investment indeed.

【推荐2】Simon's marks have been very high this year. I have been quite pleased with his work. Although he didn't do very well in Form 4, he seems to find Form 5 much easier. He is highly motivated (动机强烈的). We know that many animals do not stay in one place. Birds, fish and other animals move from one place to another at a certain time. They move for different reasons: most of them move to find food more easily, but others move to get away from places that are too crowded.
When cold weather comes, many birds move to warmer places to find food. Some fishes give birth in warm water and move to cold water to feed. The most famous migration (迁徙) is probably the migration of fish, which is called “salmon”. This fish is born in fresh water but it travels many miles to salt water. There it spends its life. When it is old, it returns to its birthplace in fresh water. Then it gives birth and dies. In northern Europe, there is a kind of mouse. They leave their mountain homes when they become too crowded. They move down to the low land. Sometimes they move all the way to the seaside, and many of them are killed when they fall into the sea.
Recently (近来), scientists have studied the migration of a kind of lobster (龙虾). Every year, when the season of the bad weather arrives, the lobsters get into a long line and start to walk across the floor of the ocean. Nobody knows why they do this, and nobody knows where they go. So, sometimes we know why humans and animals move from one place to another, but at other times we don’t. Maybe living things just like to travel.
