Can we forget bad memories(记忆)? Someone might tell you that time is the only "cure". But this might be not true.
Researchers at Canada's Mc Gill University have tested a pill(药片) that can help you forget bad memories. They tested it on 60 people and found it to be successful.
All 60 people had experienced painful romantic relationships and wanted to forget them. In the study, they were asked to write about these bad memories. Then, they took a pill that is usually used to treat(治疗) high blood pressure(血压). They then recalled their bad memories by reading what they wrote earlier. In the end, they talked about their feelings, saying that finally they could forget their bad experiences.
Dr. Alan Brunet, who led the study, believes that the pill can ease the pain that bad memories bring. People can take it after bad things happen to them.
How did the pill do this? In fact, your memories change all the time. They're like text files(文件) on your computer. Every time you recall and "open" the files, you might happen to make some changes and "save" them. Researchers believe that the pill can stop proteins(蛋白质) in the brain from "re-saving" these memories. This means some details(细节) of the memory are lost.
However, there are some ethical(伦理的) worries about this treatment. Some people might use it to forget things that they should be learning from, such as when they committed(犯) a crime. People are discussing which kinds of memories should be forgotten with this pill.
1. The 60 people who tested the pill did NOT ________.A.have painful experience | B.write down their bad memories |
C.have high blood pressure | D.recall what they wrote down before |
A.make…better | B.make…less | C.make.…worse | D.make.…more |
A.how our memories change over time | B.how the pill stops bad things from happening |
C.how the research group created the pill | D.how the pill helps us forget bad memories |

During the 2016 Rio Olympics, people were surprised to see the round, purple marks on the body of the famous American swimmer Michael Phelps. What happened to him? In fact, he just visited a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and had "cupping" (拔火罐).
Massage and acupuncture (针灸) are two other important kinds of TCM. Chinese massage can make you relaxed and fresh. In acupuncture, doctors put long needle (针) into the patients' heads, faces, arms...
TCM is an important part of Chinese culture. The earliest medical classic in China, Huangdi's Classic on Medicine, came out more than 2,000 years ago. The book is about the relationship between man and nature. In Chinese culture, yin and yang are the two parts of nature.
For example, it is common to eat on the way to school, at our desk, or in front of the TV. But TCM thinks it's wrong. Here are the correct ways: Sit down to eat. While eating, turn off the TV and get away from the work desk. Eat seasonal foods. Do not miss any of the three meals.
Nowadays, traditional Chinese medicine is becoming more and more popular around the world. A government report says that people in 183 countries and areas are now using TCM.
A.Also, get your body moving often. |
B.It takes away pain, though the look is funny. |
C.Nature keeps balanced if yin and yang work well together. |

French and American doctors have done an operation (手术) together in which the doctors were outside the operating room. This kind of operation is known as robotic operation.
Doctor Marescaux did the operation in an office in New York City last month, while a sixty-eight-year-old woman patient was in a hospital in Strasbourg, France.
A doctor in Strasbourg got the patient ready. He placed medical tools and a small video camera in her stomach area. Doctor Marescaux in New York watched the patient on a video screen. Then he used the computer to send messages to the robot machine.
The robot moved the tools that cut the woman’s gallbladder (胆囊) away. The woman got well soon after the operation and left the hospital two days later.
Experts say the main problem with such a robotic operation is based on high-speed telecommunications (通讯系统) between the doctor and the robot. Technology must be able to send a doctor’s order to a robot to move the tool quickly.
Experts also say a successful robotic operation will improve an operation. For example, the robot can make such smaller movements than a person can. A robot machine can turn tools in ways that a doctor’s hand cannot.
Doctors say such a robotic operation will make safer and better operations in the future. They say it will improve doctor training. It will also mean that doctors could do an operation on people in dangerous places far away. And it could mean that people could have operations done by top doctors without having to travel to the city where the doctors work.

“When humans lose a language, we also lose the greater diversity(多样化)in art and traditions,” said Bogre. Between 1950 and 2010, 230 languages disappeared. Today, a third of the world’s languages have fewer than 1,000 speakers left. Every two weeks a language dies with its last speaker, and 50% to 90% of them are said to disappear by the next century.
Volunteers have been asked to film local speakers talking in their mother languages. Local speakers are asked to share their stories. One volunteer recorded a language that had never been studied by language researchers before. Another volunteer found a speaker of Ainu, a language in Japan that has nothing to do with any other known language.
A lack(缺乏)of protection is the reason for diminishing(削弱)the language diversity. For much of the 20th century, governments across the world made some local people use official languages. More than 100 languages in Australia have disappeared since Europeans arrived. However, most languages die today because of other things. The weather change and urbanization(城市化)greatly result in the disappearance of languages.
1. What do Bogre and Frederico want to do together?A.Test people’s language levels. | B.Offer language lessons to people. |

People can ask the robot to write stories and emails, create instructions for cooking a certain food, translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions. In its own words, it is “a language model trained in a large amount of internet text to help users get human-like text.”
Compared with Siri or other chatbots, ChatGPT uses a much bigger information center for training. It also uses stronger software (软件) and hardware to learn things by itself. For example, if it provides a wrong answer to your question, you can tell it the right one and it will correct itself. “It’s a totally different chatbot,” computer scientist Liu Xiaoguang from Nankai University told Tianjin Daily. “The knowledge level ChatGPT shows is the same as a university student. That’s why it shocked the world.”
But one big problem with ChatGPT is that it makes mistakes or even gives false information. When Rezza, a 28-year-old from Indonesia, used the robot to write an essay (论文), it “gave out many examples which other writers actually hadn’t mentioned at all”, he told The Guardian. Since the robot is trained using words from the internet, it can also pick up biases (偏见) about certain groups. These are all things that need to be dealt with.

Then when my crop bore its fruit, the birds discovered it. The birds were not afraid of my dog at all. I shot them but as soon as I walked away. they returned. At last, I killed some birds and hung them among the crop, hoping they would serve as the scarecrows, which turned out to be successful. By harvest time. I had nearly two bushels of rice and two and a half bushels of wheat.
With my new grain to store, I found a new problem. The fine grain ran through my baskets. It took me nearly two months to form and dry two ugly pots- one for rice and one for wheat.
Next I formed a clay oven and made some other tools from hard wood and cloth to bake bread. I made and baked bread in my oven. I spent the third year on the island in farming and baking.
Soon after that. I began to think of my days sailing in a tidy boat with Xury. I wished to have a boat and explore the island by sea.
I tried to turn over the ship's boat that I had seen washed up, but failed. I was still determined to have a boat. So I chose a strong tree and spent weeks cutting it down. Then it took me months to turn it from tree to boat.
When it was time to launch, I realized I had made my boat too far from the nearest stream. The boat was far too heavy for me to move. I tried bringing the water to the boat instead of the boat to the water. I soon saw it would take me twenty years of constant labor.
I celebrated my fourth year on the island with two boats, but I was no closer to a sea journey.

In Europe, for example, coffee shops are common places for people to meet friends and to talk while they drink coffee. On the other hand, places like this were not as common in North America in the past. Instead, people in North America liked to drink coffee in their homes with friends. The coffee culture in the USA changed when Starbucks coffee shops spread across the country.
The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the USA. It was a small coffee shop that cooked its own coffee beans. The coffee shop's business did well and by 1981 there were three Starbucks stores in Seattle.
Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment(设备). He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, which caused his great interest. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired(雇佣)Schultz as the company's head of marketing(市场营销). In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The special environment of the espresso(浓咖啡)bars there caught his eyes. Back in the USA, Schultz created an environment for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and casual, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Starbucks began opening more stores across the USA. Then the company opened coffee shops in other countries as well. Today, there are more than 16,000 Starbucks coffee shops all over the world.
However, that does not mean Starbucks has not had problems. In fact, many Starbucks stores have closed over the past few years. On the one hand, this is because there were too many coffee shops competing for business in one small area. On the other hand, stores in some countries closed because the coffee culture there did not match with the "feel the same everywhere" environment offered by Starbucks.

However, most people don’t regard pronunciation as a very important part of communication skills. They pay more attention to vocabulary. One reason is that most people don’t even realize their mispronunciations. So it’s important to find out the words you mispronounce first. You should listen to experts those who make fewer pronunciation mistakes. When listening to them, you should pay attention to words that sound strange, because you may pronounce the same words differently. When you meet such words, look up their right pronunciations in a dictionary. You can also search for words that are difficult to pronounce and make a list (清单) of them. At last, read aloud. Now you’ve got the correct pronunciations of the words. It’s time to practice reading them out every day.
阅读短文,根据短文内容判断句子正误。正确的写“A”,错误的写“B”。1. Most people think grammar is the most important part in communication.
2. Most people don’t realize the importance of pronunciation because they are able to pronounce correctly.
3. Experts think there is no need to find out the words you pronounce in a wrong way.
4. After pronouncing these words correctly, you should practice reading these words loudly.
