A survey made by China Daily last year found that eight of 10 senior middle school students were nearsighted, compared with 71.6 percent in junior middle school, 36 percent in primary school and 14 percent of 6-year- olds in kindergarten. Overall, 53.6 percent were nearsighted.
The growing prevalence of myopia is not only a Chinese problem, but an especially East Asian one. In South Korea 96 percent of people (below the age 20) have myopia. In Singapore, the number is 82 percent. However, in the UK it is about 20-30 percent.
Some scientists think it is not good that so many students are nearsighted. It brings much trouble in their life, such as in the bathroom, the glasses people wear are easily covered by heat, which makes it impossible to see everything. What do you think if you put your glasses down before going to bed, you can’t find them in the morning?
Several factors have something to do with the high rate of nearsightedness in China’s children and teenagers, including lack of outdoor physical activities, lack of enough sleep due to heavy homework and too much use of electronics products.
Biologists compared Singaporeans living in Singapore to those living in Australia. They found that 29 percent of the Singaporean students had nearsightedness compared with just 3 percent in Sydney. The main reason was once again, time spent outside.
“The big difference was the Chinese children in Australia were outdoors lot more than their matched peers in Singapore,” says Ian Morgan, a retired biologist at Australian National University. “This was the only thing that fit with the huge difference in prevalence.”

It is usually be1ieved that both genes (基因) and environment may affect people's temperaments in different ways. But now scientists have found that the season of birth also plays a role.
Scientists from Budapest, Hungary, studied 400 university students. In the study, the students needed to finish a questionnaire (问卷). The purpose of it was to find out which of four kinds of temperaments they most had. From the questionnaire, scientists found that the students always answered something like "My mood often changes for no reason" and "I love to deal with new projects, even if it is risky". These answers were then matched with their birthdays.
They discovered that people born in summer easily change between sad and happy moods compared to people born in winter. Those who always feel positive are mostly born in spring and summer.
The study also found that those born in autumn less probably had a mood ofdepressionwhich may easily drive them to cry, while those born in winter were not easier to be angry.
Scientists said that this was probably because the seasons had an influence on certain chemicals in the human body. And the chemicals are important to control people's moods even in adult life.
"It seems that when you are born may increase or decrease your chance of developing certain mood disorders (紊乱)," lead scientist Xenia Gonda told The Telegraph.

Objects under water will appear larger than they would on the surface, too. Be careful not to tell any stories about the big fish that got away. That fish might not be so big after all! It's just because sometimes things can seem to be as much as about 33 percent bigger in water!
What's more, in deeper water, colors just don't seem as bright. In fact, it looks as if some colors are missing. Remember the color of an object results from the wavelengths (波长) of light that are reflected (反射) from its surface. And light is taken in as it moves down through the water.
Swimmers wear wet suits to keep warm underwater. Let's take a bright red, yellow, and blue wet suit as an example. These colors are hard to miss on the surface of water. Watch carefully the changes in color as you descend in the water. The red part now looks almost black because the red light wavelengths, the longest among these three colors, are missing. As you go down deeper, the same thing will happen to the yellow part and in the end to the blue part. Even at a place of about 6 to 9 meters underwater, you will look terrible, like a ghost! And you have to wait for your return to the surface to enjoy the bright colors again!
1. You miss the object underwater when you want to touch it because________.A.your eyesight is quite poor |
B.you are not quick enough |
C.it is not as close as it seems |
D.it disappears very quickly |

A woman’s smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child.
A smile may show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion across cultures. For example, many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual. However, many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places. Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; while some Americans believe that Russians don’t smile enough. In Southeast Asian culture, a smile is often used to cover painful feelings. Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.
Our faces show emotions(情感), but we should not try “reading” people from another culture, because we would “read” someone from our own culture. In fact, members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as members of another do, which does not mean they do not experience emotions. For example, in public and in formal situations, many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do. When with friends, Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.
Because of personal and cultural differences in the United States, it is difficult to conclude about Americans and facial expressiveness. In America, people from certain cultural backgrounds seem to be more facially expressive than others. Remember that try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of “reading” the other person incorrectly.
1. What does the smile usually mean in the U.S.?A.Joy. | B.Politeness. | C.Love. | D.Thankfulness. |

In yesterday's circus (马戏团) show ,a lion suddenly went mad and tried to kill its trainer .Then it had to be shot dead .When the circus packed up and left, the head of the circus said the show would go on, even without lions.
However ,even before this tragedy (悲剧), animal rights activists fought against keeping wild animals in unnatural situations and forcing them to make money .It is now time for us to take steps to make sure that circus animals are treated properly.
Circus Safety for Animals
Our circus recently experienced a most tragic event in its history. While we are thankful for the pity from the public, we are also shocked by the opinion expressed in “Tragedy at the Circus.”
First ,our performing animals are not taken from the wild .We always believe humans and animals can-and should-live together nicely .To us ,our circus is one of the only places left to support and protect performing in the existence (存在) of the species (物种). Those who say that circus life is harmful to animals show little knowledge of these facts .Life in the "wild" is unsafe, but an endless fight for existence.

My mother has realized the disadvantages of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票经纪人).I said in a voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs Tan.” And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he doesn’t send me the check. It’s already two weeks late.”
And then, in perfect English I said : “I’m getting rather anxious .You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.” Then she talked more loudly. “What does he want? I’ll come to New York and say it in front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t accept any more excuses. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”
The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English. When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is clear and direct. It was the language that helped me form the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.
