What’s Your Favorite Bookstore?
Four students are talking about their favorite bookstores in the city.
11 Fuzhou Road | Foreign Language Bookstore Foreign Language Bookstore is my favorite bookstore. This three- story bookstore on Fuzhou Road has a lot of novels, textbooks, travel guides, magazines and so on. There are a large number of very cheap classics. Most of the books are in English, but I also have many good choices of Japanese, French and German books. Holly |
36 Shanxi Nan Road | Book Traders Bookstore Book Traders Bookstore is my favorite place in town! It’s pretty tiny, but it’s well worth visiting! It’s a good place for book lovers to buy cheap English-language magazines. It also sells lots of secondhand books including modern novels and travel diaries. Sometimes I can get a good deal at 5 yuan! Jerry |
Lane 32 Tianping Road | Mix Paper My favorite bookstore is Mix Paper. Mix Paper is a good choice! Full of popular types, the two-story store has a lot of books on art and literature. The first floor offers literature both in Chinese and in English, while the second floor homes art, design, and photography titles. Whatever I am looking for, I can find it here! Rick |
25 Changle Road | Garden Books I always go to Garden Books to search for interesting books. It sells the best classics of Chinese literature in translation, and offers a wide variety of modern literature and international bestsellers. “That is the beautiful blue Danube waltz,” said Grandma.
“I really like it,” said Leslie. “It makes me want to dance around the room.”
“I’m sure that Mr. Strauss would be pleased to hear that. He wrote that music.” said grandma. “I have a DVD of couples (成对) waltzing. You might enjoy watching it.” Grandma put a disc (唱片) into a machine and turned on the television. After a few minutes, couples walked onto a dance floor and began to dance to the waltz music. Leslie’s eyes followed the dancers. After a while, she got up and danced to the music herself.
“That was such fun, Grandma!” she said. “I felt like I couldn’t stand. I never knew that music could make you feel like that.”

“That’s why there is so much music in movies,” said Leslie.

The report shows that audiobooks become quite popular among most readers. In 100 adults, more than 30 listen to audiobooks. They mainly use popular audio sharing platforms like Ximalaya.
Kids are also main users in the development of audiobooks. Ximalaya said that teenagers spent several times as much money on audiobooks as they did last year.
What’s more, around 26. 8% of children under eight years old listen to audiobooks. Most of them listen at least once a week. “Stories for kids” and “poetry reading” are their favorite.
Why do audiobooks become so popular? One of the reasons is that people hope not to waste their free time, as China News Service reported. Whether they are at the gym, on a bus or in bed, people can enjoy reading without a heavy paper book or e-reader. Faster Internet speeds mean one can download (下载) a whole book in just seconds (秒).
Another reason is that audio app designers invited broadcasters (播音员) and production (制作) groups to join in their production. Both the quality (质量) and the number of audiobooks improved a lot. More people can find their favorite audiobooks, as a report says.

Many of us like to read books. We read everything from fiction to nonfiction (非小说 文学). In the past, we could only read traditional paper books.
Now, we can read e-books most of the time. They still have covers and pages, but they’re not made of paper. Instead, they’re pictures on a screen.
Some people really love e-books.
However, that’s not true with e-books. With them, we might not focus on the books and our attention may be on other things.
When we read an e-book written in a foreign language, we can look up new words right away. That takes us out of the stories and to an online dictionary.
In a word, it makes a difference on our reading habits. Our eyes stop reading everything on the page.
A.We only look for key words to get information. |
B.From there, we can easily change to something else. |
C.E-books are great because people can carry a “library” of books with them all the time. |
D.They have front and back covers and many pages in between. |
E.With traditional books, we mainly pay attention to the stories in front of us. |

Tuesday December 2
We planned to go to Rothera that morning. We’d be staying there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on earth, sometimes you can’t fly at all.
We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we’d be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather.
It turned clear at 9: 30 and we took off at 10: 30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn’t be able to fly the whole day.
Wednesday December 3
After waking up in the Antarctica for the first time today, I can understand why everybody who comes here falls in love with the place. It is really beautiful.
We’re staying at Rothera Survey base with mountains of ice all around. It’s about minus 2℃ today, which for me is very cold, but the regulars here are often seen walking around in T-shirts!
Thursday December 4
I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here in the Antarctica. I’m told it’s a bit colder today, about minus 5℃, but it’s not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the base have to do a special training course before we're allowed to go off the base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill.
Saturday December 6
Not a cloud in the sky and it’s warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket).
The most amazing thing about this place is how the scenery changes every day. At first I thought I was going mad. I’d step outside in the morning and think, “I’m sure that big mountain of ice wasn’t there yesterday.” It’s because the sea ice is always moving—slowly thankfully.

My biggest challenge is learning how to behave at the dinner table. As you can imagine, things are very different from the way they are at home. For example, you are not supposed to put your bread on your plate. You’re supposed to put it on the table! I thought that was pretty strange at first, but now I’m used to it. Another example is that you’re not supposed to eat anything with your hands except bread, not even fruit. You have to cut it up and eat it with a fork. Another thing is that it is impolite to say you’re full. If you don’t want any more food, you should just say, “That was delicious.”Also, you’re not supposed to put your elbows on the table. I have to say that I found it difficult to remember everything, but I’m gradually getting used to it. I don’t find French customs so strange any more.

In ancient times, people’s only transportation means (方法) were their feet. So it was difficult for them to travel from one place to another. As a result, they knew few things about outside world. The world was too big for them to understand.
With the development of modern science and technology, more and more transportation means appear: bicycle, bus, car, train, ship, plane, etc. They carry goods and passengers to and from every corner of the world. And they shorten the distance between people. With the help of these modern facilities (设备,工具), people all over the world can get in constant touch with each other.
So it’s easier for people from different nations to understand each other, to communicate with each other. Thus, this world is getting smaller and smaller, just like one big family.
