March 14 is the anniversary (纪念日) of Pi. Founded in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw. March 14 was selected because 3.14 means the first three numbers of Pi, and it also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday. The first Pi Day celebration took place at Exploratorium in San Francisco. However, this day became a formal international holiday until 2009.
It is said that Archimedes, the ancient Greek mathematician, was the first one to accurately calculate (计算) Pi. In 1965, the British mathematician John Wallis found that Pi is equal to the product of infinite fractions (无穷分数的乘积). In 2015. scientists at Rochester University found the same formula (公式) for Pi.
Pi is represented (代表) by the Greek letter π. It is about 3.141592654, representing the ratio of the circumference to the diameter (周长与直径之比). In daily life, 3.14 is usually used to represent Pi. And 10 decimal (小数的) places 3.141592654 is enough to deal with the general calculation. Even if engineers or physicists want 10 make more correct calculation, at best. They only need to take values to hundreds of decimal places.
In maths, this infinite number is rather important. Pi has been calculated 10 more than 1 trillion (万亿) decimal places, but the mathematicians don’t plan on stopping there. The appearance of computer makes the calculation of π value develop rapidly. In August 2010, Shigeru Kondo, a Japanese computer wizard (奇才), used cloud computing to calculate Pi to 5 trillion decimal places. Then from October 2011, he spent about a year to calculate Pi to 10 trillion decimal places, setting a Guinness world record.

It is advisable to have a break of 2—3 days before we start to eat another packet of instant noodles as our body need about 3 days to clear that layer of wax coating away from our body system. Do you know the danger of having too much wax coating stored in our stomach? It will lead to CANCER.
There are two key points to take notes while preparing instant noodles: (1) Wash the instant noodles with warm water first, stir it and pour away the water containing the wax coating. (2) Repeat Step 1 and try to stir the noodles again to wash away the wax coating on the noodles before cooking it in a new pot of water.

On the other hand, there is also a huge disadvantage. According to a new study from the University of California Riverside, tall people may be more likely to develop cancer.
Leonard Nunney, a researcher at UC Riverside, reviewed four large population studies about the height and cancer. Nunney studied more than 10,000 cases of cancer, and when he looked at the result given a person’s height, he found that the cancer risk rises by 10 percent for every four inches above the average height a person is --average being 5’4’’ for women and 5’9’’ for men.
“If you were comparing a five-foot guy to a basketball player who’s over seven feet tall, then that basketball player would have around twice the risk of cancer across the board,” he said.
In the study, which was published in Proceedinds of the Royal Society B, Nunney explained that one possible reason why tall people have an increased risk of cancer may be because of the simple fact that they have more cells (细胞) in their bodies. The more cell division happens in you, the greater the chances that cells will lead to turnour (肿瘤) growth.
Nunney found that the connection between the height and cancer risk was nearly the same with 18 out of the 23 types of cancer he tracked. He also discovered that skin cancer risk had an unexpectedly strong relationship with the height. And taller women had an increased risk of thyroid (甲状腺) cancer, as well.

B.tall people are more likely to have skin cancer |
C.the height is the main part in causing cancer |

So what did people do before there were maps? Well, it was quite easy to use natural signs like mountains and rivers if you were travelling on foot or riding a horse. People took small boats down rivers and followed coastlines. And it was much more logical (合理的) to use time, not distance, to measure (计量) journeys: the next village is a three-hour ride, for example.
In fact, in the earliest maps, people didn't draw landmarks. They drew the stars. It was very easy to see the night sky and use it for navigation (航行). The sky was a lot clearer before the light pollution from cities that we have today. When towns and cities were built, people drew road maps which gave correct distances and directions.
The London Underground was opened in 1863 and it also used a road map style. But a man called Henry Beck realized that travelling by train wasn't the same as driving your car across London. Passengers only needed to know which stations to change at. His new design (设计) for the Underground map wasn't very popular with the train companies at first. But the passengers loved it and in 1933, 700,000 copies were printed.
These days, of course, you can ride a bike, drive a car or go through a forest and know where you are exactly, using a GPS. It's really difficult to get lost!

The study found their memory and problem-solving abilities got better for at least a month. The stimulation was painless and could lead to future treatments (治疗) for memory. It can even help students with their future exams.
Volunteers in the study did better in both remembering words and working out memory-based problems. In the test, they wore a cap and it was connected to electrical currents (电流). Wearing the cap twenty minutes a day was enough to help people remember words better. The volunteers could retell more words a month later.
Working memory is connected to problem-solving and decision-making abilities. Low frequency (频率) stimulation of the brain can help boost working memory. For example, volunteers also did better in taking notes after the stimulation.
The brain training industries are worth millions of dollars. Players are interested in improving their abilities by doing memory exercises. The future is wide open if it is tested to be successful and safe in treatments.
1. According to Paragraph 2, who is likely to take the electrical shocks?A.A man who wants to remember everything. | B.A boy who wants to get higher marks. |

【推荐3】An Unforgettable Experience
It was the week before Christmas, and there were a lot of people waiting in a long queue at the post office hall. It seemed that no one was moving. I came to the self-service machine where the queue was much shorter.
I don’t like self-service because I’m not good at it. The machine always asks me something I don’t know how to answer. I hate this. I like the old-fashioned way: hand to hand, human to human. I think it is fast and friendly.
The woman in the front of the queue was clicking away at the screen. And the clicks were surprisingly loud. There were many signs of hesitation(犹豫) on her part. I felt sorry for her: The machine could smell fear and nervous. The next person took a long time, too. I breathed deeply. By the time it was my turn, I was so nervous that I felt the beat of my heart.
I felt a growing pressure and I tried to minimized (减少) the seconds between clicks. Finally it was time to slide in a credit card. The machine didn’t take it. “Trying putting it in the other way,” the gentleman behind me suggested. No good.
“I’ve got a different card,” I said, and looked for it in my handbag, beginning to sweat. The machine wanted a PIN (个人密码), but not the one I suggested.
“Start over,” I clicked; I tried the first card again.
Oh, no. I had to start all over again.
“I’m sorry,” I said, looking back, embarrassed. “You all go ahead.”
“Don’t give up,” said the nice man behind me. “Try it again. We’re all friends here, right?”
Seeing smiling on their face, I tried again, clicked carefully and introduce my credit card as if I were presenting it to the queen. Finally, I made it!
I couldn’t have been happier. Everyone burst into applause (鼓掌). Comfort and joy!
