You may have heard of the saying “The Yangtze River is China’s mother river”. The main route of the Yangtze is almost 6,400 km long. As the world’s third-longest river, its valley(流域)covers one-fifth of China’s land area. The Yangtze River Economic Zone(长江经济带)covers 11 provinces and cities, making up about 40 percent of China’s total population and GDP.
On Dec. 26, China’s top legislature(立法机关)passed the Yangtze River Protection Law(《长江保护法》),which has taken effect on March 1, 2021. It is the first law to protect a waterway in China, CGTN noted.
The “mother river” is in great need of protection because something is wrong with it. For example, due to overfishing and water pollution, the river’s Chinese paddlefish(白鲟)has died out after surviving for 150 million years. There’re also desertified(荒漠化的)land and soil pollution near the upstream part of the river in Qinghai Province, Xinhua reported.
The Yangtze River Protection Law includes bans on activities that could damage the river. It also includes heavier punishments for those who don’t follow the law.
According to the law, fishing will be banned in all of the Yangtze’s natural waterways, including its major tributaries(支流)and lakes. Those who are caught fishing will be fined 50,000 to 500,000 yuan.
Sand mining(采砂)will be strictly limited in the river valley. Many companies are mining sand along the river, as sand is a rare resource. However, this has led to lower water levels on the river, which has caused the river’s water quality to decline.
Companies operating along the river will need to focus on green development. Companies that produce dangerous chemicals will be relocated(搬迁),the law says.

The film tells the real stories of Chinese climbers. They climbed the mountain in 1960 and 1975.
On the northern slope (北坡) of Mt Qomolangma, there is a 30-meter-high cliff (峭壁).
Nobody one can get to the top without going over this cliff. In 1960, a Chinese climbing team tried to reach the top. The four members stood on each other’s shoulders (肩膀) to climb the cliff. Although it was hard for them to take in air, they still succeeded in reaching the top.
They became the first people to reach the top of Mt Qomolangma from the northern slope.
Fifteen years later, another Chinese climbing team reached the top. They spent a whole day building a ladder (梯子) on the cliff. The ladder helped more than 1,300 climbers from all over the world achieve their dream of climbing the mountain. The ladder stopped working in 2008. It is now in a museum in Lhasa, Tibet.

The Duke researchers asked overweight girls aged 9 to 13 who were already in a weight loss program to read a novel called Lake Rescue. It was carefully created with the help of pediatric experts (儿科专家) to include specific healthy lifestyle and weight management guidance, as well as positive messages and strong role models.
Six months later, the Duke researchers found the 31 girls who read Lake Rescue experienced a significant decrease (fall) in their BMI scores (-.71%) when compared to a control group of 14 girls who hadn’t (+.05%), explained Alexandra C. Russell, a fourth-year medical student at Duke who led the study.
“As a pediatrician, I can’t count the number of times I tell parents to buy a book that might provide useful advice, yet I’ve never been able to point to research to back up my recommendations,” says Sarah Armstrong, director of Duke’s Healthy Lifestyles Program where the research took place. “This is the first probable interventional (介入的) study that found literature can have a positive influence on healthy lifestyle changes in young girls.”
Obesity is becoming more widespread in children, according to the CDC (Centres for Disease Control), which reports that 16 percent of children aged 6 to 19 are overweight or obese, a number that has increased since 1980. Researchers are looking at a lot of ways to help kids stay healthy, lose weight and be more active, but Armstrong says, “most don’t work very well. The weight loss choices that are effective typically involve taking powerful medications with side effects, or require long-lasting surgical procedures.”
While the BMI decrease due to the book is small, Armstrong says any decrease in BMI is encouraging because BMI typically increases in children as they grow and develop. That’s okay as long as it follows a normal, progressing curve. In overweight kids, however, BMI usually increases more quickly. “If their BMI percentile (百分位) goes down, it means they are either losing weight or getting tall and not gaining weight. Both are seen as positive signs in kids who are trying to lose weight,” she explains.

How would you use a computer if you could not see the screen (屏幕)? Don’t worry Screen readers can help you. With them, blind people can use a system of keyboard orders instead of a mouse to get where they need to go. Screen readers can read aloud the words on the screen to the blind, or they can be connected to refreshable Braille displays (盲文显示机).
Refreshable Braille is an electronic way of reading Braille. Refreshable Braille displays can turn the words on the screen into Braille. They can then appear on the screen and can be read with a finger. When the person finishes reading some words, the following words will appear. Refreshable Braille displays are very helpful to people who are deaf and blind.
Blind students use AT in the classroom to catch up with their classmates and do homework. Students who have poor eyesight can use an electronic magnifier (放大镜) to see what the teacher is writing, on the blackboard.
Blind students use refreshable Braille displays to quietly read an e-book Textbooks can be read with AT, such as hardcopy Braille, refreshable Braille, or the audio format, according to the students’ abilities and hobbies.
The development in AT makes it more possible for disabled people to learn, compete, and communicate with normal people.

In Europe, for example, coffee shops are common places for people to meet friends and to talk while they drink coffee. However, places like this were not as common in North America in the past. Instead, people in North America liked to drink coffee in their homes with friends. The coffee culture in the USA changed when Starbucks (星巴克) coffee shops spread across the country.
The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, the USA. It was a small coffee shop that cooked its own coffee beans. The coffee shop’s business did well, and by 1981 there were three Starbucks stores in Seattle.
Things really began to change for the company in 1981.That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, which caused his great interest. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company’s head of marketing (市场营销).
In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The special environment of the espresso (浓咖啡) bars there caught his eyes. Back in the USA, Schultz created a similar environment for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and casual, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Starbucks began opening more stores across the USA. Then the company opened coffee shops in other countries as well. Today, there are more than 16,000 Starbucks coffee shops all over the world.
However, that does not mean Starbucks has no problems. In fact, many Starbucks stores have closed over the past few years. The main reason is because there were too many coffee shops competing for business in one small area. Another reason is that the coffee culture in some countries did not match with the environment offered by Starbucks.

If you don’t know, it’s possible to ask for something with a yes or no question. Be careful not to use the direct expressions. In other words, don’t say “Give me that”, but ask kindly as the following examples, “Do you have a pen I could borrow?” “Is there any wine?” “Did you buy any bread?”
If you know or see someone has something, ask a polite question with “could”, “may” or “might”. It’s also possible to use “can” in some special situations. In the past, “can” was not used when people asked for something, but meant ability. It’s common to use “Could you lend/hand/give…?” You can also use: “May/Can I borrow…?” “Could/Can you lend me…?” “May I have…?” “Could you hand/give me…?” Do not begin a sentence with “please”, but you can add “please” at the end of the sentence to be polite.

Since its TV show made the first appearance in 1990, its 14 half-hour programs have been sold to more than 200 TV territories worldwide. This year sees Mr. Bean celebrate its 25 th anniversary(周年纪念日).
Why has the character enjoyed success with people of different cultures?
Unlike most people in comedy today, Mr. Bean doesn’t make much use of dialogue, so there is no language barrier (障碍) in his work. Mr. Bean can talk ---sometimes does--- but what he does is much more important than what he might say. For example, in a TV episode, Mr. Bean becomes a barber and makes a terrible mess of the customer’s hair. This doesn’t need any translation.
But there’s a deeper reason. Although he is British and the stories generally take place in British settings, people from different cultures laugh at Mr. Bean for the same reason earlier generations (一代人) laughed at comic star Charlie Chaplin.
As Atkinson told the newspaper: “The essence (本质) of Mr. Bean is that he is self-centered and in fact doesn’t care about the outside world.” Mr. Bean breaks social rules wherever he goes – he jumps the queue, tries to cheat(作弊) in exams – we all secretly want to do but generally don’t.

But, many people, especially children, do not have good hand washing habits. One problem is that children do not wash their hands often enough or long enough. Children may think that it is a tiring thing to do.
To help handle this problem, two businesswomen from India created a product to turn handwashing into a fun activity. Amanat Anand and Shubham Issar created a tool called SoaPen, aimed at teaching kids good handwashing habits and encouraging kids to wash their hands with soap properly and regularly.
As the name suggests, SoaPen is a pen made out of soap. The children draw on their hands with the soap pen and then wash the drawing off. If they don't spend enough time washing it of, the colors will remain on the children's hands. Issar said it makes sure that children take enough time to wash their hands. This may be especially helpful in a classroom. Often a teacher does not have the time to make each child wash his hands properly.
Kids actually wash their hands for the proper amount of time because they're drawing on their hands. To obliterate the drawing, they wash their hand carefully instead of just going underwater with a one-second wash and off. Issar and Anand handwashing stated that SoaPen to be created everywhere will help develop good habits through handwashing in the city across the globe.
