Do you think you could live your life without buying anything? There are people in the world who live in this way. They are called freegans. Freegans live a non-consumerist (非消费主义的) lifestyle—they reuse clothes, household items, and even food that other people just throw away.
Finding food plays a big part in the life of freegans. They look for food in the wild or even eat food that they take from dumpsters (垃圾桶). When you hear the word “dumpster”, you usually think of a smelly (发臭的), dirty place—but in reality, most food that is thrown away is of good quality (质量). Many supermarkets throw away vegetables and fruits simply because they look ugly. Freegans eat this kind of food.
I used to have many misunderstandings about the freegan way of living. I thought they were poor or homeless. But in fact, most freegans have the income to live just like regular consumers. Instead, they choose to live in a way that is more eco-friendly. Many of them also spend their free time volunteering to promote (宣传) a greener lifestyle.
It’s hard for many of us to live a freegan lifestyle because we are used to consumerism. This is why I really admire (敬佩) the freegans’ wish to protect the planet. I am now trying not to spend money on any unnecessary things. It is my first step in helping reduce global waste.

Coin collecting, called numismatics, is one of the oldest and most popular types of collecting. People like learning about coins and their history. They like the challenge of finding rare(稀有的)or unusual coins. Some see their collections as a valuable investment. Others just enjoy the beauty and variety of their coins.
There are many different types of coin collections. Some numismatists choose to collect foreign coins. They may focus on a certain country or a certain time period when they begin their collections. Another popular way to collect is to choose a theme and then look for coins that have pictures of the animals, people, or objects that fit into that theme. For example, a collector may search for coins with pictures of ships, birds, or even famous people.
Some collections can become very valuable. This depends on several factors: the type of coin, the rarity of the coin, and the need for the coin. If you own a rare coin that few people are interested in, it will be worth less than a rare coin that many people want to own.
Condition also plays an important role in deciding a coin’s value. Serious collectors store their coins very carefully in special boxes. They touch their coins with special gloves. If you owned a Liberty Head coin from 1913, which is worth about one million dollars, you would probably be willing to give it special treatment, too!
If you are interested in starting a coin collection, the best thing to do is to learn a little about it first. You can find books about coin collecting at the library, and you’ll learn how to decide the value of various coins and store your collection properly. The next time you look through the coins in your pocket or in your piggybank, you might find that you have the beginnings of a very interesting hobby!

"Sure, honey, that sounds great." I said, thinking back to my own best friend, Lillian. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights, New York. We met at the age of 10, too. Like my daughter, I was shy, but Lillian drew me out. She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a big smile.

The next day Donna brought her new friend home. "Hi, Mrs. Loggia." the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she smiled brightly. "My name is Laura."
