Li Ruyan, 13 years old, did something special last summer with his classmates in Shanghai. They worked in groups with traffic police at different crossroads in the city. Holding small red flags, the students helped keep order and stopped people from jaywalking (乱穿马路). As part of the school project, Li’s school has encouraged its students to do more community (社区) work. After the half day of exhausting work, Li told himself not to jaywalk anymore.
“I think through community work we get to help others and, more importantly, we grow a sense of responsibility (责任感),” he said.
Community service is an important part of education for teenagers around the world. In the US and Canada, high school students need to finish 40 hours of community service before graduation. In America, those who have finished 1,400 hours of community work can be awarded nearly $5,000 (33,000 yuan).
Chinese students today do more community work, too. For example, starting from 2010, Sichuan high school students have been asked to do 10 days of community work. It will become part of their school grades.
Qian Lijun, 16, and her classmates in Suzhou, Jiangsu went to a local elder care home this winter. They put Spring Festival couplets (对联) on the walls and cheered up the people living there.
Li Xiaotian, 15, in Anshan said he used to clear flyers (小广告) from telephone poles (电线杆) with his classmates. They brought tools, towels and buckets and worked for three hours under the summer sun. “It was tiring, but seeing the clean poles without ugly ads, we really felt proud,” he said.

One day, my friend and I entered a little coffee house and ordered two cups of coffee. While we were waiting, two young men came in and began to order, "Five cups of coffee, please. Two of them for us and three suspended." They paid for their order, took the two and left. I asked my friend "What are those 'suspended' coffees?" Instead of giving me the answer, he told me to wait and see.
Some more people came. Two girls asked for one coffee each, paid and went away. Then came three lawyers who paid for seven coffees-three for themselves and four suspended. While I still wondered what the suspended coffees were, I enjoyed the sunny weather and the beautiful view in front of the coffee house. Suddenly a poor man dressed like a beggar(乞丐)came into the coffee house. He kindly ordered a suspended coffee and sat there to drink it.
At that moment, I knew the meaning of the suspended coffees. It's just people pay the coffee in advance(预先)for someone who can't afford it. The tradition with the suspended coffees started in Italy over one hundred years ago during the Christmas. And now it's spreading to many parts of the world. Meanwhile, I understood suspended coffee is not only a cup of coffee, but also the warmth and love to someone in need.

How can I always fall behind? I just can't come up with an answer.” Mom realized that her son’s self-respect (自尊心) had been hurt by the ranking system, but she didn't know what to say to help.

Her son and his friend went on to high school that year, but no matter how hard he tried, her son’s friend still outdid him. But she was proud of her boy for his hard work. However, the tool may be too powerful for the education world. According to a survey of more than 1,000 students in the US, over 89% of them have used ChatGPT to help with homework. Some schools in the US have banned (禁止) the use of ChatGPT. The action comes out of worries that the tool makes it easier for students to cheat on homework. Some also worry that ChatGPT can be used to spread wrong information.
“It doesn’t build critical-thinking (批判性思维) and problem-solving skills for students. These are necessary for study and success,” said Jenna Lyle, secretary of the Department of Education in New York City.
Except for bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to avoid the use of ChatGPT. Some teachers in the US try to set more speaking exams and handwritten homework.
However, not all educators say “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are making rules on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.
Bhaskar Vira, a teacher in the UK, said that bans on Al programs like ChatGPT are not wise. “We have to know that AI is a tool for people,” he said. “What we need to do is to change our ways of learning, teaching and exams. That way, technology and education can make progress together.”

March 2 is Old Stuff Day(旧物日). It is all about old stuff—things that you used and have been forgotten for ages in your home. You must have some old stuff around. And today is all about enjoying it. Because what’s better than finding something really great from days gone by?
It’s so easy to forget things you have. If we don’t use them every day, some things can be put away and stay there. And that’s not just the things in your home—technology grows so quickly, new toys come out all the time, new books keep coming out. In the age of new information, we can have so many things easily. Today is all about remembering the things we sometimes leave behind.
We’ve learned to value what age can bring to things. Wines, for example, are more valuable and tastier as they grow older. It’s certain that old things still have their uses, value or charm(魅力). People today will pay a pretty penny for stamps, toys, video games, board games, books, coins, and clothes of yesterday.
You can really get into the charm of old things by visiting a junk shop (旧货店). Another person’s old stuff could be your new stuff! Or maybe now is a good day to clean up? Old stuff could become a great gift for someone else, or you could always send your old things to a charity shop. If you’re free, you could turn your old things like old clothes into new ones with just a little change.
Today could be a good day to visit your older families. You could ask your grandparents to tell you stories about family history, their childhood and their youth. Learn about what was going on in the world when they were growing up.
Most of all, remember that today’s new stuff will one day be old stuff.

You might feel annoyed when it takes too long to connect to your online study system. But that could soon be a thing of the past. Since China started 5G commercialization (商用) in June 2019, many Chinese companies have started to provide 5G services. With growing investment (投资) and enthusiasm (热情) among consumers and companies, China has kept its role as a global 5G leader, said GSMA, an international association of mobile operators, in a report released on March 17.
