One day, I happened to meet an Englishman in a store and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be very surprised, gently shaking his head and saying, “You don’t say! You don’t say!” I was puzzled(困惑的), and I thought, “Perhaps this is not a right thing to talk about.” So I said to him, “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? Have you ever been there?”

“Certainly. When I’m back home, everyone will laugh at me if I leave here without seeing it. The Great Wall is wonderful!” he answered.

“Yes, it is one of the wonders in the world. And people from all over the world have come to visit it,” I added. As I was telling him more about it, he said again, “You don’t say!”

I couldn’t help asking, “Why do you ask me not to talk about it?”

“Well, I didn’t ask you to do so,” he answered, greatly surprised.

“Didn’t you say ‘You don’t say!’?” I asked again.

Hearing this, the foreigner laughed loudly. He began to explain. “‘You don’t say!’ means ‘Really?’. Perhaps you know little about English idioms(习惯用语).”

【推荐1】One day during our holiday in England, my friend and I went to the train station to buy tickets to London. As native (本土的) speakers of English, we did not expect to have problems in English.

“Two tickets to London, please.” I said to the ticket seller

“Single?” the ticket seller asked me.

I thought that she couldn’t hear me clearly, “Two tickets to London!” I shouted.

At that moment a man helped us. He said that “a single ticket” in Britain doesn’t mean “one ticket”, it means “a one-way ticket”.

My experience in England taught me that there are some differences between British and American English. An Englishman may ask, “Would you like white coffee or white tea?” And an American asks, “Would you like your coffee or tea with milk?” We can find some differences such as the British saying “He’s in hospital”, but the American saying “He’s in the hospital”. Americans write words like color without the “u” of the English colour.

How much do you know about the differences between British and American English?

* Create an English environment for yourself.     1     The more you read and hear the language, the better you’ll understand how and when to use common words and phrases and how the language is pronounced.

*     2     No matter where you are and who you are speaking to. When you speak in your native language, ask yourself, “How would I say that in English?”

*     3     Even if you’re having trouble pronouncing words or remembering phrases, don’t keep your head down. Speak in a natural way; keep your back and head straight. If you’re in a relaxed setting, put your hands behind your head and put your feet up. Train your body into feeling in control.

* Find a language friend who speaks good English and wants to learn your language.     4     Increase your confidence by knowing you have something valuable to teach, as well as something to learn.
