I just moved and I’m kind of shy, so how do I make new friends?
—Jessica,11, Canada
Dr Molly’s Answer①
You should tell him about your dream and that if you work really hard, it might happen even though you started late. The sooner you tell your dad how you feel, the sooner you’ll be able to work on making your dream come true.
Dr Molly’s Answer②
Nobody knows you at your new school. You have nothing to lose, so gather up all your courage(勇气) and go over to someone who looks friendly and introduce yourself. You can ask that person about your teacher or the other kids in your class to break the ice.
Good luck!
Dr Molly’s Answer③
It’s better to tell your mum the truth than wait for her to find it out another day. When tell her, explain why you failed the test. Ask her if she can help you study in the future, so you’ll do better on your tests and also have time for the soccer you love.
Dr Molly’ Answer④
Just be yourself and try not to care about what others think. The more you think about it, the worse you will feel. Always act strong and confident. Even if you are a little unsure(不确定的) of something, don’t doubt (怀疑) your abilities to do things right. Just relax.

With the help of her family, Jessica started to explore the world with her feet. As a child, she started learning to dance. When the first performance arrived, she asked to be put in the back row. Her dance teacher told her there was no back row. Feeling anxious and worried, she began her performance with other students. When she finished, the applause from the audience gave her encouragement and the confidence to continue dancing for 14 years.
Jessica’s parents eventually met a Taekwondo (跆拳道) coach named Jim Cunningham who was very willing to teach her. As a result, she had been Jim’s student for years. At the age of 14, Jessica won her first Black Belt in the International Taekwondo competition .
After graduating from high school, Jessica attended the University of Arizona where she got a bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

There are a lot of interesting things living in the sea. There are many types of fish and many other animals. There are also many types of plants. There are even some animals which have a lot in common with you. They are mammals living in the sea. How much do you know about creatures that live in the sea? Do you want to know more about the food chain(链)in the sea?
In the sea, all sea creatures get food from other sea creatures. At the first link of the food chain are the sea plants and plankton (浮游生物). Plants are found only in the sunlight zone where there is enough light for them, however, animals are found at all depths of the oceans though their numbers are greater near the surface where food is enough. Many kinds of fish and animals, such as the snail, shrimp, jellyfish, and sea star eat the plankton. The small animals and fish that eat plankton then become food for larger fish, such as the tuna and mackerel. These fish are then eaten by larger fish and animals, such as the shark and dolphin. The shark and dolphin are at the top of the food chain in the sea. Sharks are very dangerous so many people are eaten by them in the sea. But why the number of the shark is becoming smaller and smaller? And who eats the shark? Check out the menu at a seafood restaurant next time you are eating there. Don't be surprised if you find shark on the menu.

Many young people want to become famous. In our dreams, these things happen easily. But what is life like for young people who really realize(实现) their dreams to be a star? In 2005, a new musical called Billy Elliot opened in England. It’s about a poor boy named Billy. He wants to be a ballet dancer. Three different boys take turns playing the role of Billy. They need to beat(打败)hundreds of other boys to get the part. The musical has changed their lives.
The boys stay in London for four out of every five weeks of the year. In England, you have to go to school until you are 16. The boys have lessons during the day and then work in the evening. They spend most of their weekends practicing singing and dancing. One of the boys appears on the show while another spends the evening sitting in the theater. If the boy who is acting gets hurt, the second boy can take over(接替)so the show doesn’t stop.
The boys who were already working on the show were getting older, so the producers looked at hundreds of replacements(替代者)and chose just 15. Many of these boys came to London and trained for a whole year before the producers decided if they wanted them. Becoming a star isn’t easy. It’s not like in your dreams!

Dr. Michael Twery, an expert(专家) on the science of sleep and sleep disorders, says,"Getting a good night's sleep is important for learning because it stores the training and learning exercises into our long-term memory while we're sleeping 7 to 8 hours. And then the next morning, our mind is better prepared to perform. "
But what about getting some rest during the middle of the day? Does napping (sleeping for a short time) also help our brain work better? If it is really helpful, then how long can a proper nap last?
Napping can help babies and young children learn better. Also, it can stop older people suffering (遭受) from memory loss. Some people have sleep problems at night, so they nap during the day as a way of paying off a sleep debt. They hope napping may make them feel less tired and sleepy during the day.
In America, it is a shame for people to admit (承认) that they do take a nap. They suppose napping shows they are weak or short of energy. That only children, the very old, sick or lazy people nap is a widely-accepted opinion. However, that may be changing. Many offices now offer napping rooms, and napping cafes are appearing in many U. S. cities.
Unlike America, napping is part of a normal, everyday life in other parts of the world. For example, China is generally considered as a land of nappers. Researchers found nearly 60 percent of old Chinese people took a nap after lunch and most of them napped for about an hour. The study found that people who took an hour-long nap did much better on mental tests than those who did not nap or who napped for longer periods. It seems that the most helpful nap lasted for about an hour.
But Dr. Michael Twery mentions that an hour-long nap may be too long for young, healthy adults. "We're suggesting that we try to nap for about 30 minutes or less. And 30 minutes is enough to help us feel more awake. " He also found that someone who naps because of bad sleep at previous night may not experience the same improvements from napping as a healthy, well-rested person would. So, the right thing to do is to get enough sleep at night and take a proper nap for about 30 minutes. But remember not to take a nap later than 3:00 in the afternoon, which may cause a sleep problem.
1. According to the passage, Dr. Michael Twery probably agrees thatA.napping only helps the healthy, well-rested people improve their brain performance |

He notices a thousand times a day the differences between the language he uses and the language others use. Little by little, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s.
In the same way, children learn to do all the other things without being taught to walk, run, climb or ride a bicycle. They compare their performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them himself. We do it all for him. We thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him work out with the help of other children if he wants it.
If it is a matter in math or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such daily work? Our job should be to help the children when they tell us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let the children learn what all educated persons must learn, how to measure(估量) their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.
Let them get on with this job in their ways. School teachers can offer help if they ask for it. Some parents and teachers are worried that the children might fail to learn something that they will need to get in the world. Don’t worry! If it is important, they will go out into the world and learn it.
