In Syria, there’s a library, and it has 15, 000 books on almost every subject you can think of. However, it is different from any libraries you know. It is a secret underground library, and only people in Syria know where it is.
Over the years, the war has destroyed Syria badly. Every day, houses are bombed and people are killed. Stores are closed one after another, and so are schools. To help the kids in Syria with their learning, Ahmad, a 19-year-old student, and his friends decided to build a library. They built the library under the ground to keep it safe from bombing. But it is dangerous to collect books for the library . Often, Ahmad and his friend look for books in houses that were bombed. They need to be careful because they may be killed in another bombing.
You may ask, “In a place like Syria, would people be interested on books?” “Just like the body need food, the mind needs books.” says one library user. In the library, people enjoy their time of reading and forget about the terrible world above, so their life doesn’t seem so hard. Through reading, they are able to dream of a better life after war.

Seth, ten years old, was born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫). After he moved to the school last year, he got lots of problems. His teacher Mrs. Taylor asked Jerome to help him with things like going to the washroom and showing him around. The two boys soon became good friends. Because of his illness, Seth had a big head. Some students laughed at him. Jerome usually stopped them.
Seth’s father thanked Jerome for looking after his son, “He is such a good kid.” The two boys’ story spread quickly after Jerome’s mother Susan shared it on the Internet. “These boys didn’t win but they are champions (冠军).” said the mother.

When the woman placed the bread, she always gave a prayer for her son. Her son had gone to a faraway place and she hadn’t heard from his for a very long time.
Every day, a tramp came and took away the bread. He said when he was leaving, “The evil you do remains with you. The good you do comes back to you.”
The woman felt irritated. “Not even a word of thanks”, she said to herself with unhappiness.

The day before, for some silly reason, I had a fight with another boy. My head was still sore. We hadn’t talked since the fight, but only stared (盯) coldly at each other.
Still, I was in a good mood (心情) in the morning because I knew my mom was bringing some of her homemade pizzas as a treat for my brother, me, and our friends. She saved the last two pieces for me. I thanked her with a smile and started to eat when I saw that boy standing off to the side by himself. At that moment, something moved my heart. I walked over to him and gave him one of the pieces. We talked, laughed and ate. And for some reason that I didn’t understand at the time, the pizza tasted better than ever before.
I can see now what moved my heart: A little miracle (奇迹) was working inside me. It was moving me to forgive (原谅), to give, and to love. And I’m so happy that I followed that guidance.
May you forgive, give, and love. And may your pizzas always taste delicious.

Many of the self-help books are written by famous people or psychologists(心理学家). They teach you how to deal with problems in your life—for example, how to get along with your classmates or coworkers, how to manage your time well and how to find happiness in daily life.
But can these books really help us with our lives? People have lots of different opinions about this.
Julie Hall from London is a big fan of self-help books. After reading more than 300 of them, she set up her own self-help website. Her site helps women succeed in the business world. “They(self-help books)can give you the courage(勇气)and motivation(动力)to do whatever you want to do,” she told the Independent.
However, recent research by the University of Montreal in Canada might not agree with that. Researchers surveyed two groups of people—one of the groups had read many self-help books, while the other hadn’t. They found that people in the first group were more stressed out and depressed (沮丧的).
