In May 1804, Lewis and Clark led the Corps of Discovery to begin the journey on the Missouri River. Lewis’ main job was to lead the men on the ship. And anyway, he needed to make maps of the geography of the unknown land. As for Clark, he usually studied plants and animals along the way.
As the trip continued, one of their men became ill and died. They also had to do their best to find food and stay healthy during the winter months.
Sacagawea, a Native American, joined the Corps of Discovery in the winter of 1804. What she knew about Native American culture and her ability to speak different Native American languages made the journey much easier. Thanks to her, trade with Native Americans began.
Lewis and Clark reached the Pacific Ocean after traveling through several rivers, including the Clearwater River, Snake River and Columbia River. However, they did not find one direct (直接的) waterway that could lead boats straight to the Pacific from the Mississippi. Still, the journey was a big success.
Their journey lasted for two years and four months. During the journey, they found the Rocky Mountains. They learned about over two hundred plants and animals that were new to the Americans. Lewis and his men drew about 140 of the first maps of most of the Western United States.

It’s a big family. They are very friendly to me. They help me do many things. When I want to write to my friends, they buy stamps for me; when I lose my camera, they help me buy a new one.
After some days, I go to another school in New Haven. I live in the Palumbos’ house. There are three people in the family. I’m surprised that the parents are from two countries.

On this special day, Jay and the other boys stopped to climb a tree on the winding path and find a comfortable branch to sit on. At that time, Jay noticed something shiny on the ground clearly. “What do you think it could be?” he asked Mike and Tony as he pointed to the object shining in the Sun.
They all jumped down from their branches and went to take a closer look. They couldn’t understand what they found. It was a wallet with five hundred dollars inside.
Mike immediately said, “Fantastic! We can divide the money into three parts, and we will each be closer to buying the newer bikes we want.”
“Not so fast,” said Tony. “Jay was the one who found the cash first. To be fair, he should get more than us. He should get three hundred dollars and we should get one hundred each.”
“Are you guys crazy?” asked Jay. “We can’t keep the money. It isn’t ours. Aren’t we more mature than to play finders keepers like we did when we were kids?”
“Stop being such a supporter for honest,” complained Mike and Tony.
“Whoever lost the money wasn’t very responsible and should learn a lesson about walking around with that much cash on them,” added Mike.
“Let’s all go home and think about this,” said Jay.
Mike and Tony agreed to Jay’s suggestion. Jay kept the money, and they all rode their bikes home. They decide to meet again after dinner.
Mike and Tony lived on the same street, so they rode home most of the way together. They were able to talk more without Jay. However, the more they talked, the more they saw Jay’s point. They also thought about how worried they would be if they dropped and lost something that was important to them.
When they met after dinner, Mike and Tony thought that Jay was right. They all rode to the police station to turn in the wallet. The police officer who took the report told them he was impressed by their honest. He also said if no one reported the lost object, it would rightfully be theirs. He recorded Jay’s phone number.
The next morning, a man called the police station to report a lost wallet. When he found out it had been turned in, he was very happy. He asked who turned it in and learned about Jay and his friends.
Shortly after, Jay received a phone call asking him to go to the police station. He was a bit nervous, but when he got there, he learned that the wallet had been reported, and the owner decided to reward the individuals who had turned it in. The police officer handed him a gift card for one hundred dollars at the local bicycle shop.
Jay met up with Mike and Tony later that day and told them what had happened. They all realized that it is better not to be keeper. It was a happy ending for everyone.

① Teachers are often considered to be engineers of the human soul. They are expected to spread knowledge, ideas and truth. There’s one person in China who is called the “teacher of teachers”. He is Tao Xingzhi, a Chinese educator.
② Born in Anhui province, China, in 1891, Tao studied abroad for educational philosophy. When Tao returned to China in 1917 and began his own career as an educator, he did not blindly follow western education methods or theories. In fact, he changed the saying of “Education is life itself” to “Life is education”. Similarly, instead of “school as society (社会)”, he saw it as “society as school”.
③ For Tao, education is an active experience in real-life instead of telling and being told. He supported “unity of teaching, learning, and reflective (反思的) acting”.
④ Besides developing education methods, Tao also tried his best to improve mass education. After doing surveys in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai in 1921, Tao was surprised to learn that in China more than 70% of the people in the city didn’t know how to read or write.
⑤ To solve the problem, Tao organized young workers and farmers to study while working. To deal with the shortage of teachers and money, in 1927, Tao set up Xiaozhuang Normal College in Nanjing to train teachers and educators, most of whom became teachers at schools in the countryside.
⑥ In January 1934, he started the “Little Teacher” movement in which young students were encouraged to serve as teachers to others, even to those older than themselves. Under Tao’s guidance, over 18,000 “little teachers” were invited in Shanghai within 10 months. It later included 28 provinces and cities as a key nationwide education movement. Even in the fight against the Japanese army, Tao never forgot his dream. He founded a middle school in Chongqing and offered free education to poor children.
⑦ Maybe Tao’s motto is the best explanation for his life. “Giving a whole heart, yet taking nothing in return, not even a leaf of grass.”

I was sad but could do nothing. Later, something happened, and it changed my life. It was an English speech contest. My English teacher asked me to take part in it. What a terrible idea ! It meant I had to speak before all the teachers and students of my school ! “ Come on, boy, believe in yourself, You are sure to win. ” Then my teacher and I talked about many different topics. At last I chose the topic “Believe in yourself”. “I tried my best to remember all the speech and practised it over 100 times. With my teacher’s great love, I did well in the contest. I could hardly believe my ears when the news came that I had won the first place. I heard the cheers from the teachers and students. Those classmates who once looked down on me, now all said “Congratulations!” to me. My teacher hugged me and cried excitedly. Since then, everything has changed for me.
