Life is not easy, so I’d to like to say “ When anything happens, believe in yourself. ” When I was a young boy, I was so shy that I dare not talk to anyone. My classmates often laughed at me. I was sad but could do nothing. Later, something happened, and it changed my life. It was an English speech contest. My English teacher asked me to take part in it. What a terrible idea ! It meant I had to speak before all the teachers and students of my school ! “ Come on, boy, believe in yourself, You are sure to win. ” Then my teacher and I talked about many different topics. At last I chose the topic “Believe in yourself”. “I tried my best to remember all the speech and practised it over 100 times. With my teacher’s great love, I did well in the contest. I could hardly believe my ears when the news came that I had won the first place. I heard the cheers from the teachers and students. Those classmates who once looked down on me, now all said “Congratulations!” to me. My teacher hugged me and cried excitedly. Since then, everything has changed for me. When I do anything, I’11 try to tell myself to be sure and I will find myself. This is true not only for a person but also for a country.

On the day when it was Ronny’s turn to read, he sat very close to me. I watched his fingers move slowly under each letter as he tried to speak out “Bud the Sub”. It sounded more like “Baw Daw Saw” when he said it because of his difficulty with the alphabet(字母表).
The year passed quickly and Ronny had made some progress(进步)but he was still below the level of grade. A few weeks before the school year ended, I held an award ceremony(颁奖典礼). I had gifts and certificates(证书)for everyone. It took me a while to think about which fit Ronny; I believed the gift could cheer him up. I finally decided on “The Most Progressive Reader”. The first year in my school, Mr. Brown taught me history. He was quite different from the other teachers I had known. But I had to say that he was indeed a great teacher.
One day, Mr. Brown called me aside and asked why I was a B student in his class but a C student in the rest of my classes. I passionately told him about my divorced parents, the local gangs, the drugs, the fights, the police—all of the evil things I had experienced. It was then that Mr. Brown patiently explained that the only person responsible for my situation was me. And the only person with the potential to change my situation was me. He told me that I failed not because I was a failure. He inspired me to become a better student.
Ten years later, I was preparing to graduate from a university. The first person coming to my mind was him. So I tried to reach him and wanted to tell him that I really wished him to come to witness this important moment together with me.
I'll never forget his response. He said. " Who is this again?"
At that moment, I came to realize that I was just one of hundreds of the students whose lives were changed by him but he had no idea of his influence.
Mr. Brown never came to my graduation, but his absence taught me another valuable lesson. However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually put it into practice. What’s more, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practising. To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, the time that most people won’t put in.
This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like great pain and will probably make you give up well before you ever become good at it.
When you see people showing some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some unusual talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway.
Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, with all your heart and over a long period of time. If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards(回报). Time and hard work won’t make sure that you will get the great success you may want, but it will make sure that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.

But in my anger, I didn’t even realize that I had taken both my father’s shoes and his wallet. As I made my way to the bus station, I felt some pain in my foot. I noticed that the shoe had a hole in it.
There were no buses around. Not knowing what to do, I looked in my dad’s wallet. To my utter shock, there wasn’t much money inside. I also found a note from his manager. It asked him to wear nicer looking shoes to the office.
I remembered my mother asking him to buy a pair of new shoes, but he said that his current(现在的)pair of shoes should last another six months at least.
I started to walk home. I then realized that when I had left, my dad’s motorbike was not there. I started feeling weak in my legs and wanted to cry. I ran home as fast as I could.
When I got home, my dad was there waiting for me. I couldn’t help but cry. I hugged him tightly and said, “I’m sorry, Dad. I don’t need a bike.”
That’s when I realized just how much pain and hardship our parents go through sometimes, and how great their love for us is. Everyone should do a better job of remembering this from time to time.

Access to education is also an issue for many families, and they are unable to afford the fees to send their children to school. But with the help of a new grassroots project, these problems are being settled all at once. Known as the Recycle Pay project, plastic waste acts as money to allow parents to pay a portion of their kid’s school fees.
The organizations, African Clean Up Initiative and Wecyclers, set up the Recycle Pay project and partnered with the Morit International School in Ajegunle to make it happen. They’ve made it easy for parents to take advantage of this project. They simply need to bring a bag of plastic waste to a fixed spot and have it weighed. The weight is then translated into a value of money and deducted(扣除)from the fees owed to the school. It’s a positive outcome for everyone-the environment is a little bit cleaner and there’s less financial hardship on the family.
Parents are thrilled with the arrangement as it ensures that their children can continue their education, “I struggle to pay for school fees, sometimes I pay half the price and later pay the remaining balance,” explains a parent Sherifat Okunowo to the BBC. “But with the introduction of this project, the plastic has made it easy for me to pay school fees.”
“It has really reduced the burden on parents” the school’s principal says. “We now collect fees faster-the school wins, the children win, the parents win, everybody wins.”

Technology is forever changing the way we get our news. Many people now get a lot of their news on electronic devices, instead of traditional media, such as newspapers, television or radio. An increasing number of people also report turning to social media for information.
Now, there is a new technology that could greatly change the way we get the news: computer-created news readers. The news readers-created by machine learning technology, are based on two real-life Chinese newsmen. One is able to present(播出) newscasts in English, the other, in Chinese.
In Xinhua's report, it said machine learning was used to examine video looks and sounds of the two newsmen. The system then created the AI robotic presenters, which look and sound like real people. The AI presenters will be a great improvement to the news team because they "can work 24 hours a day tirelessly" on its website and on social media. And they were able to read the news "as naturally as" a human presenter.
On social media, many Chinese noted that the AI presenters did not seem real. People criticized them for not being more lifelike. On China's Twitter-like service micro-blog, several users wrote that the news readers have "no soul(灵魂)." One user joked, "What if we had an AI leader(of China)?"
Some wondered if AI robots might take the workers' place. "It all depends on production costs, which will determine if we lose jobs?" one micro-blog user wrote. Some people argued that only low-level jobs requiring heavy labor will be replaced by AI robots. Others praised the technology as a way for companies to make money from low-cost labor machines.
Recently Britain's BBC used machine learning to make an AI presenter. It looked like one of its news readers who were speaking different languages. Also, developers working on Amazon's Alexa(a smart speaker system) have worked to create a special news reader voice for the electronic assistant(助理). Such a system could be further developed to provide other kinds of speaking voices for different situations in the near future.

But first, let me give advice to other foreign students who plan to study in the United States. Check the weather before coming! I was very sure that California was sunny all year around so I left all my jackets and sweaters in Paris. It was a huge mistake! It rained almost every day during the first week in Berkeley.
I have to say that I quickly forgot these unlucky events. Life in Berkeley is very pleasant and everything is so easy compared to Paris. For example, in only 24 hours I bought a mobile phone and rent a flat. What’s more, almost all the shops are open on Sunday.
The first thing that surprised me is that students may come late to class. They freely enter and leave the classroom many times during class. In France, students respect the teacher’s lesson, so they are never late and they leave the classroom only at the end of the class.
The local people in California are in general very nice, open and active. However, I am not totally used to their habits yet. Indeed, I was used to shaking my friends’ hands every day in France. During my second day at Berkeley, I shook the hand of one of my classmates whom I had met the day before and he told me “I think we already met!”
I live a great experience at present, and I would just encourage any student to become a member in a program at UC, Berkeley.

The first computer was made in 1946. It was very big but it worked slowly. Today computers are getting smaller and smaller. But they work faster and faster. What can computers do? A writer has said, “People can’t live without computers today.”
The Internet came a little later than computers. It is about twenty-five years later than computers. But now it can be found almost everywhere. We can use it to read books, writer letters, do shopping, play computer games or make friends.
Many students like the Internet very much. They often go into the Internet as soon as they are free. They make friends on the Internet and maybe they have never seen these friends. They don’t know their real names, ages, and even sex. They are so interested in making the “unreal friends” that they can’t put their hearts into study.
