Animal and insect (昆虫) bites are often only a trouble thing, but sometimes they can be dangerous. Stay safe by knowing the measures you should take and what to do in an emergency (紧急情况).
Insect bites are the most common by far. Some of these can cause unpleasant reactions (反应).
◆Seek medical attention if an insect bite causes bad reactions.
◆Sometimes a bite becomes infected with bacteria (细菌), causing spreading redness of the skin and fever which requires treatment.
◆Sometimes an insect bite (especially bee) can cause a serious allergic (过敏的) reaction. The reaction needs urgent medical attention, so call the emergency services.
Many insects pass diseases. In many countries, for example, mosquitoes (蚊子) carry malaria (疟疾) or yellow fever. Protective clothing and mosquito netting are necessary in many parts of the world and are very important in those countries where malaria is common.
◆Always check the risks for the place you will visit before you go-ask your doctor or travel agent, or check out the web.
◆If there is malaria in the country you are visiting, take some medicine as advised (the drugs used from area to area depending on conditions). You will need to start it some weeks before you travel.
◆Keep your legs covered after sunset.
◆Use a mosquito net at night.

In a study published in June by Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, researchers found that the phenomenon of imposter syndrome can appear regardless of age, gender or intelligence.
What is imposter syndrome?
Although it’s often called a “syndrome”, imposter syndrome is not an actual diagnosis (诊断) of a mental problem or medical issue — it’s simply a negative thought pattern.
People who have experienced imposter syndrome might have thoughts like “I’m a failure” or “I have to work harder than everyone else”.
They might also feel that their accomplishments are not worthy of praise. They believe any success they have achieved is due to luck rather than their skills or hard work.
Who experiences imposter syndrome?
Imposter syndrome affects many people around the world, from teens to adults. It might surprise you that many successful people experience feelings of inadequacy (不足) about their jobs or lifestyles.
In 2020, an analysis of this phenomenon was published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. Researchers used data collected from 62 studies and found that up to 82 percent of participants (参与者) suffer from imposter syndrome.
How can imposter syndrome be overcome?
Overcoming negative thought patterns is not easy, but it is possible. It’s important to remember that this feeling is completely normal.
One tip is to stop comparing yourself to others. Quite often, you don’t see the full picture of another person’s success. British physicist Anthony Leggett, who was awarded a Nobel Prize in 2003, said: “I missed out on standard high school physics, so I have always been a bit confused about simple things like why the noise from a kettle stops as the water nears boiling.”
It’s impossible for everyone to be good at everything. Next time you are feeling insecure (不安的) about your abilities, remember that it’s perfectly normal and you can work to overcome those feelings.

You might wonder why people smoke at all. Many people start smoking when they are kids or teens and they try it for many reasons. Maybe all of their friends were doing it or they grew up in a house where all the adults smoked. On the other hand, kids started smoking in order to look cool, act older, lose weight, or feel independent.
But no matter why they started, many smokers( men, women, boys or girls)wish they could stop. Stopping smoking is hard, though, because there is nicotine (尼古丁) in cigarettes (烟). Someone can get addicted to(沉溺于) nicotine within days of first using it. When something is addictive, your body and mind will tell you that you need it to feel OK. If you don’t get it, you might feel sick, stressed out, or get angry.
Stopping smoking mostly has two steps. The first step is to deal with your dependence on nicotine and the other is to break the habit of smoking. When you stop smoking, you may have to wait a few days or even weeks before the nicotine finally leaves your body.
Most importantly, we must make sure kids and teens understand the dangers of smoking as early as possible.

What color is a tennis ball? Ask your classmates, and they might give you some surprising answers.
The Atlantic asked 30,000 people this question. Among the people surveyed, 52 percent said tennis balls are green, 42 percent said yellow, and 6 percent said something else.
According to the International Tennis Federation, tennis balls are yellow. So, why do most people say that they’re green?
When we first see an object in natural light, our brains recognize its true color. Even if the object is seen in different kinds of light later, our brains can still tell its true color. Scientists call this color constancy(色彩恒常性). For example, we know that China’s flag is red. When we see it during sunset or under purple light, we still know that it is red, even if it looks like a different color.
However, the color of a tennis ball is not as pure as the flag. It appears to be a combination(结合)of yellow, a “warm” color, and green, a “cool” color.
The US-based magazine says that when our brains try to figure out what color the ball is, some people ignore(忽略)cool colors like green, blue and purple. So they see the ball as yellow. Others ignore warm colors, such as red, yellow and orange. They see the ball as green.
It is not just tennis balls that make such confusion(混淆). In 2015, a girl posted a picture of a dress online. Some people said the dress was black and blue while others said it was gold and white. They had different opinions based on whether they ignored cool or warm colors.

In recent years, the proportion (比例) of girl students is growing fast. In 1998, about 39.75% of the college students were girls. In 2000, it was 41.07%, and in 2001 the number was 42.14%.
There are several reasons for this. First, there is little difference between boys and girls in their intelligence (智力). That is to say, girls are almost as clever as boys. And boys have more interests than girls, so they are not so absorbed (专心的) in their study. Second, girls are more careful, more sensible (懂事的) than boys. They work harder at school and they do better in all exams. Another reason is that in China, there are more women teachers than men teachers. The last one is that with the development of society, people pay more and more attention to girls’ education.

Dr Yuan Longping worked most of his life growing better rice. As a result of his research, the Chinese people are no longer worried about getting starved. His great work also helped the world produce more and more rice.
Yuan, born on Sept. 7, 1930. After graduating(毕业.) from Southwest Agriculture College, he worked as a teacher at an agriculture school in Hunan.
Several natural disasters(天灾)hit China in the 1960s. Yuan, saw many people die of hunger every day. Since then, he has researched how to grow much better crops.
In 1964 , he happened to find a natural hybrid rice(杂交水稻)plant that had great advantages over others. Yuan was excited about his discovery. He then began to study the parts of this unusual plant.
In 1973, he started to develop a type of hybrid rice species(种类). It produced 20% more rice per unit than common ones. The seeding(种植)was very successful in the following year. This progress made China the world’s leader in rice production.
More than 50% of China’s total rice fields grow Yuan’s hybrid species. People call him the “Father of Hybrid Rice”.

UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined.
Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition “depending on who needs it”.
Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it influences all.
Simard talks about “mother trees”, usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “mother trees” with no awareness of these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the whole forest.
“We didn’t take any notice of it,” Simard says sadly. “Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance.” If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.

Any parent will tell you that their child is their most precious (宝贵的)gift. In one year, when I am sending my daughter on her first day of school, I will trust her teacher that she will return safely. Knowing that her teacher is an adult she can trust, who cares about her and who makes her excited to learn and return to school the next day. So I prepare to send my child out into the big world where she will meet new children and teachers, ready to learn and explore this big world.
However, before she becomes a real student, I'd like to share with you what I hope for her teachers.
Develop strong relationships with your students. Really get to know them and show an interest in them, their friends and their family life.
Know your students. Learn about their dreams and encourage them. Find out your students' strengths (长处)and offer chances to use them and feel that joy of doing something they both like and are good at.
Get to know your students' parents. Share with us how you prepare your students and how we can help them deal with a sometimes scary world. Those things are what draws your students to you and what gives parents comfort that their children are having a good experience at school. For many, especially the youngest, your role in your students' lives may be similar to that of a parent. Thank you for educating, loving, supporting, encouraging, challenging, and caring for our children, your students.

But how to cover your mouth is very important. You might use tissues (纸巾), and put your used tissues into the bin. “If you don’t have tissues, you should sneeze into your elbow, not your hand, even if you are used to doing that.” The doctors advised.
“If somebody sneezes into his hands, those germs will be passed on to other people, or other objects that people touch.” said Dr. Hill.
Germs are most commonly spread by sneezing and coughing. When they land on your hands, they are passed from hands to things like bills, door knobs (扶手), lift buttons and other surfaces. At the same time, the people around you can touch them.
“The suggestion was taken seriously about 10 years ago. However, most people didn’t pay much attention to it. That means the adults may have missed the advice. But children are often taught in school the right way to cough or sneeze.” Dr. Benjamin said.
To be clear, people can’t keep away from all the risks in this way, but it’s the best choice. At the same time, we’d better wear masks (口罩) and often wash our hands. “Hand washing is one of the most important things people can do to keep healthy.” Dr. Hill said.
