The health risks of smoking are well known, but kids and teens continue to smoke. Many young people pick up the habit every year—in fact, 90% of all adult smokers started when they were kids.

You might wonder why people smoke at all. Many people start smoking when they are kids or teens and they try it for many reasons. Maybe all of their friends were doing it or they grew up in a house where all the adults smoked. On the other hand, kids started smoking in order to look cool, act older, lose weight, or feel independent.

But no matter why they started, many smokers( men, women, boys or girls)wish they could stop. Stopping smoking is hard, though, because there is nicotine (尼古丁) in cigarettes (烟). Someone can get addicted to(沉溺于) nicotine within days of first using it. When something is addictive, your body and mind will tell you that you need it to feel OK. If you don’t get it, you might feel sick, stressed out, or get angry.

Stopping smoking mostly has two steps. The first step is to deal with your dependence on nicotine and the other is to break the habit of smoking. When you stop smoking, you may have to wait a few days or even weeks before the nicotine finally leaves your body.

Most importantly, we must make sure kids and teens understand the dangers of smoking as early as possible.

【推荐1】You may have been told before not to be afraid of anything. Fear is often associated with weakness. Fear is something to be avoided.

But that’s not true, according to Time For Kids magazine. Fear can be good for us.

Fear tells us about danger. Without fear, we wouldn’t know to run away from a tiger or step back from a cliff.

In a study published in the Justice Quarterly journal in August, researchers from Michigan State University said that a healthy fear of crime keeps teenagers away from potentially(潜在地) dangerous people, places, and activities.

Fear makes us jump, scream and sweat. But interestingly, sometimes we make ourselves feel fear on purpose. Think about scary(恐怖的) books and movies, and also the long lines for a scary roller coaster(过山车)ride.

Margee Kerr, a US sociologist, explained why to Time For Kids.

Fear fills our brain with healthy chemical substances, especially endorphins (内啡肽) and dopamine (多巴胺), and these things create feelings of happiness and excite us, according to Kerr.

In addition, when you’re scared, your body produces a chemical which helps people bond with each other.

“Watch people walking out of a haunted (闹鬼的) house, and you’ll see lots of smiles and high fives (击掌),” Kerr told Time For Kids. That also explains why schools and companies organize challenging trips and physical activities to build up team spirit.

People experience and deal with fear in different ways. If you happen to be a “coward” who gets scared easily, don’t worry. There is some evidence that being scared can help a person manage stressful situations.

Kerr said that things like giving a report in front of your class or performing in a school play help build a sort of endurance (忍耐力) to fear that makes us more confident.

“You become more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, and so you’re better able to work through it during tense situations,” said Kerr.

So learn to love your fear. It only grows when we forget how helpful our fear is trying to be.

文章大意:本文介绍了中国人吃盐太多,为了解决这一问题,中国于2018年4月18日推出了首份食品行业减盐指南,呼吁食品公司通过改进食品制作方法和改变口味来降低食品中的含盐量。

【推荐3】Chinese people are eating too much salt on average, people in China eat about 10.5 grams of salt each day, much higher than the 6 grams suggested by Chinese Dietary Guidelines.

China now has one of the highest salt intakes (摄入量) in the world. To solve this, China introduced the first salt reduction guide to its food industry (工业) on April 18, 2018. The guide calls for food companies to lower the salt content in their food by improving the way of making food and changing tastes.

The salt we take in usually comes from processed food (加工食品), which can be easily found on supermarket shelves. For example, a 104-gram bag of Lay’s classic potato chips has about 0. 66 grams of salt, about 10% of the suggested daily salt intake! However, unprocessed food, mainly fresh fruits and vegetables contains little. If the guide is followed correctly, the average salt intake will drop by 20% by 2030.

Eating too much salt brings a lot of health problems, especially increasing the risk of high blood pressure. Less salt is important for good health, and there’s no need to worry that food will be less tasty in the future. A study by the Monell Chemical Senses Center found that it’s easy for people to reduce their salt intake.
