At the age of eleven, Yang Kang lost his sight because of a rare disease. However, he considers himself lucky—he has a guide dog.
Yang divides his time between living in Beijing with his wife and running a piano studio(工作室) in his hometown, Tangshan. His weekly journey consists of a high-speed train ride, two bus rides and three subway transfers(转乘) through crowded stations. This would be impossible for a blind person, but Yang has Dick, a four-year-old Labrador(拉布拉多犬). The dog guides him every step of the way.
Guide dogs are rare in China. According to CCTV, there are only 200 dogs in service. The country, however, has eight million completely blind people. Yang first learned about guide dogs in 2008. At the opening of the Beijing Paralympic Games(北京残奥会), a Golden Retriever(金毛寻回犬) led Ping Yali, a partially blind long jumper, into the stadium to pass on the torch. Yang spent three years researching and making phone calls. Finally, he found out where to apply for a guide dog—a training center in Dalian.
Most of the puppies to be trained are Golden Retrievers or Labradors. They are gentle by nature. The puppies are first sent to foster families(寄养家庭) to learn to live with humans. After about a year, they return to the training center for one year of professional training. Along the way, about 60 percent of the dogs are disqualified(不合格的). A puppy must leave, for example, if it is too energetic, shows anger or suffers from car sickness. After passing all the tests, a qualified guide dog is matched with an owner. It then receives another 40 days of special training before following the owner to its new home. Yang waited five years before he got Dick.
Over the past several years, a few smaller guide dog training centers have opened in China. Guide dogs have also become more accepted by the public. Still, Yang said Dick had been turned down by bus drivers, hotels and restaurants. He wasn’t discouraged, however. Instead, he treated every refusal as an opportunity to let one more person learn about guide dogs.

“Yeah, right,” said Henry and half-heartedly rowed the boat up the river. Henry and Cameron were chosen to be partners, but they certainly weren’t friends. Cameron looked down on Henry and spent his time at summer camp keeping away from him. Henry never followed the rules, and that drove Cameron crazy.
Cameron hated the fact that the boat ride was at least 5 miles long. Just then Cameron felt some small drops of water again on his neck.
“Henry!” shouted Cameron loudly. “I said to leave me alone.”
“I’m not doing anything!” replied Henry coolly. “If you look up, you will see that Mother Nature is touching you with water.”
Sure enough, when Cameron looked up, he could see light rain coming down. Things got quiet in the boat after that. Before long, the small drops turned into large ones, and thunder and lightning began racing across the sky. Cameron didn’t know what to do. All he remembered was hearing stories about never to be on the water during a lightning storm.

When Pearl Fryar began his gardening on his farmland in South California in 2009, he wanted to achieve something amazing in his 30s--to be the first African American to win the local garden club's "Yard of the Month"award, which was his dream when he was 15.
When his garden was completed in 2016, people from many countries, including Canada, Brazil and even South Africa, flooded to see his creations.
Fryar started by using bushes that were thrown away-plants that looked dead to most people. As an excellent engineer, he worked days in a factory. So, Fryar managed his garden at night. Neighbors got used to seeing one little headlight moving about when Fryar cut and pruned his growing bushes. Fryar created fantastic skills to make plants grow into fantastic shapes: spirals and platforms and arches, reaching up to the sky. "He has a way of ordering plants to do what he wants them to do, using plastic ropes, coat hangers even his wife's old stockings," says a neighbor.
Many professional gardeners were amazed by what Fryar achieved. "The garden itself was created from lack of knowledge," said Fryar in the opening ceremony of his garden on May 1, 2016,"because I didn't know what I should or should not do with plants. For one time in my life, I got paid for my 'ignorance'. "
Fryar's garden now includes about 400 species of plants and 150 different plant sculptures. On his front lawn, four-foot-tall litters filled with bright red plants spell "Diligence, 'Ignorance' and Patience". These are the principles Fryar lives by.
Fryar also welcomes people who can't afford to pay. "You can be somebody,"he tells students who visit the garden. "Show me anyone who works with a passion and patience, and they're going to be successful. "

Once a dish comes, instead of lifting our chopsticks, we take out our mobile phones and take photos of it. Later, we post (发布) the photos onto Weibo or WeChat, waiting to be “liked”. Then we check our mobiles from time to time during the meal, to see whether we get “liked” or not. We just can’t leave our mobiles for only a meal.
Does that sound familiar to you? Do you do that often? If not, how do you feel when others do that when having dinner with you?
A recent study suggests that what we are used to doing is not so good. Spending time taking photos of food makes the food less pleasant. To test this, some researchers did an experiment. Some people were asked to take photos before they could enjoy the food. As a result, it showed that the more photos they took, the less delicious the food seemed to them. So why not stop taking photos and just enjoy the food in front of you?
Besides the scientific result, there are also some other bad influences of taking photos of food before meals. After posting the photos onto the Internet, one will not be able to control himself and check his mobile phone many times. “Does everyone like my photos? I hope a lot of people like them!” It seems that your phone secretly calls your name all the time, even when you are with real people.
So next time when you go out to have dinner with your family or friends, how about not taking photos of food? Let the food be delicious as it is and share your life with people around you. Trust me, it will be a wonderful time.

The owner of the palace said, “If so, there is nowhere else better than here for you. There is plenty of seafood and delicacies (美味佳肴) in my palace, and you can eat whatever you like without anyone stopping you. And nothing needs to be done by you.” Then, the man settled down (安定) in the palace.
At the beginning, the man felt very happy at the cycle of eating and sleeping. But gradually, he felt a bit lonely and void. To be honest, I was worried that the rest of the group might not like to talk with me because they were much older than me. I was also nervous because it was the first time I’d done anything like that. In the end, though, there was no need to worry.
One of our main jobs at the sanctuary was to collect the elephants’ food. Elephants eat huge amounts of grass and banana plants, so collecting this took most of the day. It was really hard work, but it was worth seeing the elephants enjoy their meals. We also helped wash the elephants in the river using big brushes. I found that so much fun, even if I got wetter than the elephants did! The part of the day I most look forward to was the evening. By the light of the moon, we led the elephants on foot into the forest area where they spent the night.
All the volunteers stayed in a small house, so we didn’t have much space. The weather was uncomfortably hot and wet, especially at night. The meals were delicious, which all of us enjoy. After dinner, all the volunteers and workers spent the evenings talking and playing games.
Now that I am back in the UK, I miss my friends there too much. When I look back, I can see how lucky I was to go there. Maybe I’ll go back one day-I certainly will!
