It makes me sad to watch them, and so many other kids today, consider gaming as play. When I was a kid, I knew how to play. When I wanted a metal pedal car (踏板车) like some of my rich friends, my father made me one out of wood. At first, I was ashamed of the homemade toy. But I soon began to like it when my friends all wanted a ride. Dad also built a huge playhouse and several tree houses. When I was older, he made me a high jump stand. Dad just loved building things or he really loved me, or maybe a little of both.
In my neighborhood, we didn’t have much to play with. For fun, we had to get creative. We put up tents in the yard and camped out. At night, we looked for something interesting on the streets. We once went on a week-long bike trip to a lake. It was 220 kilometers away.
My grandchildren have no idea how much fun these activities can be. That Sunday night, after dinner, I decided to take them outside to show them something “different”.
The first response (回应) was, “Why do we have to put our shoes on and go outside?” “Because I want to show you something,” I said and picked up my Frisbee (飞盘). “I think we could go outside and throw the frisbee around.”
I got a slow and unhappy “Sure” for my efforts. With some further unwillingness, we walked out into the street and began throwing the frisbee.
Slowly, we got better. My grandson caught the frisbee over ten times. It was amazing how much progress we were making. We played until it was dark.
Anyway, it was a great success. My grandchildren began a new way of playing.

Birds are not the only animals that can copy the noises they hear. Dolphins, bats, and some apes (猿猴) also copy sounds. Now we can add elephants to this list of copycats (盲目模仿者).
Dr. Joyce Poole is a zoologist. She studies the sounds of elephants. While she was in Kenya, she would hear strange noises made by Mlaika, a 10-year-old elephant, after sunset.
Mlaika lived near a highway. Dr. Poole says, "I could not tell the difference between Mlaika's call and the distant (远处的) truck noise." She and other scientists studied Mlaika's sounds. It turned out that Mlaika was copying the sounds of the trucks driving by. Why would Mlaika copy trucks that she heard going by on the highway? Animals that are able to copy sounds may enjoy practicing new sounds. When they are kept outside of their natural environment, they may copy unusual sounds. That may be why an elephant would copy the sound of a truck.
"Mlaika was not the only copycat elephant," Dr. Poole says. Calimero is a 23-year-old male (雄性的) African elephant. He spent 18 years with two female (雌性的) Asian elephants. Asian elephants make chirping sounds (sounds made by birds) to talk with another. African elephants usually do not make chirping sounds. But Calimero now does. He is copying his Asian elephant friends. Dr. Poole says that elephants need to form bonds with their family and friends. She says, "They make sounds to communicate with each other. When they are separated, they use sounds to keep in touch.”
Parrots, dolphins, humans and elephants show that being copycat is one way that animals and people make new friends and keep old ones.

According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK telecoms company(电子通信公司), the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger( 视频博主), or “vlogger”. The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as many as 40 percent of them put “vlogger” as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.
This change is undoubtedly the result of the Internet and social media(社交媒体). They have made it so much easier to reach audiences worldwide, without having to choose the job as actors in the traditional way.
“In years gone by, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood Studios; now, anyone with a computer camera can become an icon,” a Tesco Mobile spokesperson said. “Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people interacting(互动) with their fans about everyday life.”
However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful can achieve fame and wealth. For every success there are a hundred others who have never been known.
This is why although vloggers are in fashion now, some young people chose to follow careers that don’t necessarily earn them fame, but allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies.

But what about the families that are doing all right and don’t need their teens to have a job to get by?
Some parents want their teens to work so that they can learn resoponsibility and stay out of trouble after school. Getting their first job also helps teach teens the value of money and how hard it is to earn. In fact, having a job is good for teens in some ways.
Not all teens, however, need the extra money by getting a job. If a teen wants to take part in after school activites such as soprts or games, having job could get in the way of that. Teens only get one chance to be teens and being on school sports teams might be the only chance in their lifetime. Once high school and college are over, it will be very difficult to find such a chance. So parents should think twice before allowing their children to get jobs.
There are of course some teens who really want to work and that is fine. Everyone is different. If a teen wants to work to make extra money, then he or she should be allowed to do it. As teens, they should be allowed to learn about social life.
