More and more young Chinese begin to celebrate Father’s Day. They send fathers presents, or invite them for a nice dinner. But do you know how Father’s Day started?
While Mrs. Dodd, from America, was listening to a talk about Mother’s Day in a church in 1909, she had an idea of having Father’s Day to honor (纪念) her father, William Smart. Mr. Smart used to be a soldier. His wife died when she gave birth to her sixth child. Mr. Smart had to raise his six children alone. They lived a hard life, After Mrs. Dodd grew up, she wanted to thank her father for what he had done for them. She wrote a letter to a church and asked for the third Sunday in June to be Father’s Day. The church agreed with her.
The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19th, 1910 in Washington. Children made special desserts, and did other things to make their fathers happy. In 1924, President (总统) Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. People all over the country began to celebrate Father’s Day. Finally, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson made the third Sunday in June Father’s Day.

Most children are 17 or 18 years old when they finish high school.
High school students take only 5 or 6 subjects each term. They usually go to the same classes every day, and they have homework for every class. After class, they do a lot of interesting things.

②First, farm kids are too busy with farm work to get into trouble like a lot of city kids do. We usually go home right after school to work on the farm and help our parents. We have to milk the cows, feed animals, fix fences, help with watering the crops (庄稼) or any other kind of farm work. All these things keep us busy and out of trouble.
③Second, farm kids understand at an early age what’s really important in life. We help our parents when animals are born, and we take care of these animals till they die. Most farm kids like me learn a lot about life and death on the farm. That gives us an understanding of human life and death that city kids don’t have.
④In addition, farm kids have a much better understanding of nature than many city kids do. We work outside all year. We always get to watch the sunrise. We understand how heat or wind or snow can change our crops. We also understand how much water different crops need at different times of year. The farm kids learn many outdoor skills when they are young.
⑤Finally, farm kids have a greater sense of responsibility than most city kids. We know that crops and animals can die if we don’t do our work. I learned at an early age to feed the animals on time and to water the crops regularly. Sometimes I’m tired or sick, or it’s freezing cold. Even then. I know that I have to do these things because the animals, the crops, and my family depend on me.
⑥For all these reasons, I think that it is better to grow up on a farm than to grow up in the city. My own experience growing up on a family farm in Colorado tells me this. I know that growing up on a farm made me the responsible, hardworking, and thoughtful young person.

Land Protection.
People often buy drinks from plastic bottles, and most of the empty plastic bottles end up being buried. The problem is that they don’t decompose(分解)easily and become white pollution causing huge harm to the land. Recently, new public drinking water service is highly popular in the UK. More than 8, 000 liters(升)of water have been provided at bus stations, shopping centers, museums, and other public places across the capital so far. To cut plastic waste, the government encourages the British to drink the free water on the street rather than buy bottled water.
Ocean Protection.
“When scientists found a four-meter-long whale with some plastic bottles in its stomach, every one of them felt sad,” Kong, an expert from Duke Kunshan University, said. And there are at least 8 million tons of plastic going to the ocean each year. If it continues, there will be more plastic than the fish in the ocean by 2050. So people began to collect rubbish in the ocean now.

So I decided to make myself a boat. I cut down a big tree, and then began to make a long hole in it. It was hard work, but about six months later, I had a very fine canoe(独木舟). Next, I had to get it down to the sea. How silly I was! Why didn’t I think carefully before I began to work? Of course, the canoe was too heavy. I couldn’t move it! I pulled and pushed and tried everything, but it didn’t move. I was very unhappy for a long time after that.
In my sixth year on the island, I did make myself a smaller canoe, but I did not try to escape in it. The boat was too small for a long journey, and I did not want to die at sea. The island was my home now, and I was just happy to be alive. A year or two later, I made myself a second canoe on the other side of the island. I also built myself a second house there, and so I had two homes.
I kept food and tools at both of my houses, and also wild goats. There were many goats on the island, and I made fields with high fences to keep them in. They learnt to take food from me, and soon I had goats’ milk to drink every day. I also worked hard in my corn fields. And so, many years went by.

Mother’s Day originated (起源) in America during the early 20th century. The festival spread to China as early as in the 1980s and was widely accepted.
Why did a foreign festival become popular in China? In fact, Chinese traditional culture has always encouraged filial (孝顺的) devotion to parents. There are many stories which show filial respect in ancient China. For example, the story of Taste Liquid Medicine for Mother (《亲尝汤药》) tells us the filial virtue (美德) of Emperor Wen of the Western Han Dynasty. His mother had been sick for three years. He often stayed up by her bedside and cared for her day and night. He tasted the liquid medicine first before she drank it. Also, mother’s love is an eternal (永恒的) subject in Chinese ancient poems, like Song of the Parting Son by Meng Jiao, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. Now this poem is still a must-read in school textbooks. Children in China are brought up with the education of filial devotion. On special days, people often use the rose or the forget-me-not (勿忘我) to express love. The carnation (康乃馨) is considered as the perfect flower for mothers around the world, but few know that China has its own flower for mothers — the tiger lily.
Love for mothers can have different ways of expression. What matters most is love, not the festival itself. What mothers truly want is perhaps just a simple expression of love from their children.
