Fenxiaomeng’s eight hands show that it is good at sorting out different kinds of garbage and everyone should also reach out to help. You can see different colorful pinwheels (风车) in its hands. The colorful pinwheels refer to blue, green and red for using recyclables (可回收物), food waste and harmful waste (有害垃圾).
The mascot was designed by Zhang Zixia, a 12-year-old boy from Beijing. “Now, since Fenxiaomeng has become the mascot, I want to encourage more people to take part in garbage sorting and environmental protection,” said Zhang.
He started a green project called “Fenxiaomeng Is in Action”. Zhang and his schoolmates went to communities to spread waste-sorting knowledge and handed out 2,000 reusable shopping bags with Fenxiaomeng on them. They also collected garbage to help protect the ancient buildings. Zhang also set up “Fenxiaomeng Base” (基地) at every class of his school. Each base includes a recycling bin for collecting used paper and a green diary for recording everyone’s ideas about protecting the environment. There’s also a “green bank” where they store recyclables so they can sell them for money to plant trees in parks in Beijing.
