The time may be 10 a.m. in Beijing and 2 a.m. in New York. It is set on the same time—Greenwich Mean Time. This is because in 1884, many nations met to decide how to prevent the confusion(混乱)made by almost every town having its own time.
Such a time rule was devised(设计)by Sir Sanford Fleming (1827—1915). He was an engineer who lived in Canada. He held a meeting in 1884 to discuss the time problem. He suggested that there should be 24 meridians(子午线)dividing the world into 24 time zones(时区). The zero meridian would pass through the village of Greenwich near London. The time at Greenwich would be called Greenwich Mean Time, and at each of the 24 meridian lines, the time would go forward or backwards by one hour.
Twenty-seven nations agreed to this suggestion, and since then GMT has been the centre of time-keeping for all nations. Most nations have only one time zone. However, large nations such as the USA and Australia are divided into several time zones.

When you see this letter, you will have a good reason to feel excited. It means you are not alone in the universe (宇宙)! Welcome to Earth!
To be honest, I once believed that there weren’t aliens (外星人). But after I visited the science museum in our city, I had a new understanding of the universe.
In the past, I thought that the universe was just like the night sky. It’s dark and cold, and there aren’t many things in it (the planets, the moon, the many stars…what else?).
The museum changed my mind about this. I got to not only “walk” around our solar system (太阳系) but also the space outside. I “traveled” through black holes and some faraway galaxies (星系). The universe is so large and beautiful! Perhaps there is life somewhere out there!
The “Odyssey” show was my favorite part of the museum. It is about space travel. I “stepped” inside China’s space station and got to “experience” the life of astronauts. I even tried to “operate” the spaceship. It was different from driving a car. Everything was quite interesting!
Which part of the universe are you from? Tell me (or perhaps my child or grandchild) more about yourself and your world!
Don’t forget to visit the science museum in our city if you come to Earth. You will learn a lot about Earth there!
Yours,
Li Hua,

They are in space and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大气), because this is where the weather forms(形成)。They send these pictures to the weather station. So meteorologists(气象专家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.
Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteor- ologists compare(比较)them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours .This may mean the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.
So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours.
