文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了科学家一直在寻找生命的起源。

【推荐1】 . The beginnings of life provide scientists with some of the most difficult questions of modern science. Our knowledge of the development of cells, from which all forms of life are made, is not complete because we do not understand very well the conditions on our planet four billion years ago. Why and how did cells first appear? Was this very probable to happen under the conditions then? Might this happen in other places in the universe(宇宙)?

. A group of scientists at University College London are trying to answer these questions. They started by studying the ways in which the first cells on the Earth might have been formed. Next they will use a powerful new telescope(望远镜) to look at places far away in the universe. The scientists hope that the results will improve our understanding of the development of life on the Earth and help us to find similar conditions for life development on other planets.

. Dr Nick Lane, who is in charge of(负责) the University College London team, has suggested that 4 billion years ago warm water springs(泉) on the floor of the Earth’s ocean might have helped to create life. Each spring consists of tiny connected holes that water passes through. The team has created models of these springs with these holes in their lab. They have found that they encourage chemical reactions(反应) between hydrogen(氢) in the liquids(液体) that come out of them and the carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) in the sea water.

. These building blocks are not living themselves, but when there are enough of them joined together in the right way, they can make living things. Water in the system of springs moves the building blocks around until there are a lot of them in a small area. Things that look very much like real living cells can be made in this way.

1. About ________ years ago, different forms of life first appeared on the Earth according to the passage.
A.forty millionB.four billionC.five millionD.ten billion
2. The scientists search for ________ at places far away in the universe.
A.the same cells found on the EarthB.suitable places for human to live

【推荐2】With online booksellers and e-readers becoming popular, traditional booksellers seem to be dying out. But is it true? Many bookstores are now trying everything to make more readers enjoy staying there to read or choose books they like. And some of them have done a great job.

Usually, online stores have larger number of books than traditional bookstores. Some traditional ones are clever enough to sell just one kind of book and win the hearts of a specific group of people. Trends Lounge in Beijing is such a place for art lovers. The bookstore has walls of books which are about arts and artists. You may meet famous artists there or maybe even a happy couple that choose to get married in the bookstore.

Some other bookstores are trying to make themselves more than just a place that sells books. They want to be somewhere for people to socialize. The Eslite Bookstore in Taipei has spaces including clothes stores, cafes and tea houses. It also holds lots of activities on reading, such as talks with famous writers. All these make the bookstore a cultural landmark in Taipei. Luckily for book lovers on the Chinese mainland, Eslite opened a store in Suzhou in 2015. Some bookstores even go one step further. They themselves have become symbols of the city culture by showing the local culture of the city where they are. For example, Hong Kong has many second-floor bookstores because street-level stores are paid much more. These bookstores are small, but their books a are carefully chosen by the owners, just like the city of Hong Kong.

It’s true that a great bookstore can make people enjoy reading in many ways. After all, reading online can’t bring you the touch of paper, the smell of print, and the strong feeling that you are going on a wonderful journey with each new book in a bookstore.

Paper books give people a very different reading experience than e-books. Harvard did a research last year that found out reading from an e-book at night makes a big difference to your ability to sleep and among other things. When reading a book, the paper kind, one can memorize and understand better than reading off an e-reader. So come to enjoy the beauty of real books in the bookstore!
