Lulu is from Hungary. She first came to Beijing in 2017. Here, she found her greatest hobby—Beijing Opera.
“The clothes were beautiful and the movements (动作) were so wonderful. The face-painting was something I never see before. It is quite different from Western opera, ”she said, “I love Beijing Opera. I hope I can share this passion (激情) of mine with people outside China.”
Now Lulu is in the Beijing Opera Group at Tsinghua University. The group members practice singing and movements twice a week and have another rehearsal (排练) on Fridays.
The biggest problem Lulu faced was learning the singing way. “In the beginning, my throat (嗓子) hurt, because I used my voice in the wrong way,” she said. But with the help of teachers, she has improved (改善) a lot.

Asilbek is a college student from Uzbekistan. Now he has stayed in China for four years. Becoming a livestreaming -commerce host (直播带货主播) is his most wonderful experience here. In his livestreams, he sells things from his home country, including caps and scarves.
When Asilbek first came to China, he was amazed to see the digital (数字的) life here. “I never thought that everything in China would be online, ” he said. After just arriving here, he went to a shop, the seller asked him, “Do you have WeChat or Alipay?” He said, “I have cash (现金). ”
After studying e-commerce, he quickly changes. Cashless payment, online shopping, fast logistics (物流), he thinks these are the top reasons why Chinese e-commerce livestreaming is better than the ones in the other countries.

Merna, who is half Chinese, half Jordanian, is still surprised by colleges for the old people in China.
That was in 2021. She read an article about the colleges on WeChat and also saw a sign reading, “Laonian Daxue”. After talking with her friends, she got to know it means a school for old people to take classes and learn things like calligraphy (书法) and modeling.
Busy with schoolwork, she doesn’t have enough time to spend with her grandma in Beijing. So she is thinking about signing (报名) her grandma up for some classes. Once, she went to such a college. There, she met a 59-year-old lady in qipao to learn modeling. Seeing her positive (积极的) energy, she thinks such colleges can really make old people happy and give them a new start.

He had a bad first day on the job: his car broke on the way, then he found he had left his tools at home and his wife telephoned to say his son had a bad cold. While I drove him home, he was silent all the way. When arriving, he invited me to meet his family.
As we walked towards the front door, he stopped at a small tree, and touched the tree with hands. When we opened the door, I was very surprised to see he changed into another person and there was a big smile on his face instead. He hugged (拥抱) his son and gave his wife a kiss.
After a while, when we walked to the car, I asked him why he had touched the tree just then. “Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he answered. “Sometimes I have troubles on my job, but the troubles don’t belong to my wife and my son. So I just hang up (悬挂) the troubles on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up.”

What is this? Japanese ikebana(花道)? No, it’s Chinese traditional flower arrangement. They seem similar, but actually differ.
Recalling experiences in flower arrangement competitions abroad, Zhang Yan, a master and an inheritor(传承人) of Chinese traditional flower arrangement, said her works were often mistaken for ikebana. Zhang sighed, “We need more publicity on Chinese traditional flower arrangement.” Zhang hopes to do her part to introduce the art form.
Inheritance from history
The art of Chinese traditional flower arrangement has been handed down since 1046 BC. Historical records show it has served as offerings at temples, decorations in the palaces and art at homes.
“Though it has a history of more than 3,000 years, the flower arrangement is still limited to the bouquets(花束) in flower shops,” Zhang said. Because of that, Zhang began to study historical records on flower arrangement in China. “If people are familiar with the history of Chinese traditional flower arrangement, they would definitely feel proud of its centuries-old history, and think about why it’s not as well-known as ikebana, and find ways to give it a new life.”
In 2008, Chinese traditional flower arrangement was included in the second batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage(国家非物质文化遗产). To Zhang, it is the art form’s rich historical meaning that makes it heritage, and this national acceptance leads to more public understanding.
The future
Today, more and more people are learning Chinese traditional flower arrangement, not just professional florists(花艺师) but also those who take it as a hobby, even little kids. “I hope we can continue to hold an ability to appreciate the beauty in our life,” Zhang added.
Chinese traditional flower arrangement is not only a decoration, but can also serve as a form of therapy for modern busy bees.
“Different from its Western counterpart, Chinese traditional flower arrangement highlights simplicity,” Zhang said. The arranger must decide on what is truly necessary in his or her work and remove the rest. Sometimes learners are moved to tears because they begin to think what is truly necessary in their life.
“Today’s people often take no notice of the really important things in life,” said Zhang. The healing effect of Chinese traditional flower arrangement is realized when the arranger finally understands what they truly need.
In Zhang’s view, Chinese traditional flower arrangement can give us more besides its healing effects, and the key lies in the exploration of traditional Chinese culture.
“It comes from traditional Chinese culture, and it is part of it,” Zhang argued. “Only when it absorbs nutrition(营养) from traditional Chinese culture can it bloom and be world-known.”
“Our mission is to develop and inherit traditional Chinese culture,” Zhang added.

Worldwide the numbers are similarly bad, with just 9% of plastic being recycled. The results are even worse for certain types of plastic. Now, researchers at The University of Queensland have found a kind of worm could be the key to plastic recycling. The worm can eat through polystyrene(聚苯乙烯). To study how worms deal with purely plastic food, researchers separated 135 of the worms into three teams: one was fed only wheat, another was fed only plastics, and the third was given nothing.
“We found the first team of worms have been much healthier than the second and third teams, more than doubling their weight over the study which lasts three weeks. Though the second team of worms made less impressive gains, they still put on more weight than the third team of worms,” Dr. Rinke said. “This suggests the worms can get energy from plastics, most likely with the help of their gut microbes(肠道微生物).”
“The worms are like mini recycling factory, eating the polystyrene and then feeding it to their gut,” Dr. Rinke said. It’s hoped this will improve plastic waste recycling and reduce landfills. Researchers said they aim to grow the gut microbes in the lab and further test its ability to degrade(分解) polystyrene. Then they can look into how to use this to a level required for a whole recycling factory.

If tourists cause too much traffic, the local people will feel unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and treat them impolitely. But they forget how much tourism can help the local economy (经济). It is important to think about how tourism affects the local people. The local customs and beauty should be kept to attract the tourists by the local government. The local government should also care about the health and happiness of local people when developing tourism.
Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people can leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry because they can make more money there. As a result, other parts of the local economy can become worse.
On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lost jobs, and businesses can also lost money. It costs much money to build large hotels, airports, firstclass roads, and other support facilities (设施) needed by tourist attractions. For example, each room of the firstclass tourism hotel usually costs about 50 thousand dollars. If the rooms of the hotel aren’t used most of the time, the owner of the hotel will lose money.
Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity and so on. All of these support facilities cost money. If these facilities are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.
1. How will the local people feel if tourists cause too much traffic?2. What should be kept by the local government to attract tourists?
3. Do you think of people can leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry? Why or why not?
Nowadays, most of our lives are recorded online. We set up email and online shopping accounts(账户); we download(下载) music, films, games and e-books, we post and repost(转发)on Sina Weibo and WeChat. Together, these things make up our “digital legacy(数字遗产)”.
In fact, there are two types of digital legacy in the world. One is “assets(资产)” that we buy with money, such as virtual coins(虚拟币)and game equipment. As they are worth some money, they can be inherited(继承). The other kind is things that carry sentimental(情感的)value, such as social media accounts. Dealing with these is a problem.
First of all, although you may have created your online accounts, you don’t really own them—Internet companies do. You only have a right to use then. For example, your Taobao account might be closed by the company if you haven’t logged in for more than six months.
Second, it’s hard to balance between our digital legacy and privacy(隐私)protection. “Whether social media accounts, like WeChat and Sina Weibo, can be inherited is still questionable, because they are highly personal,” said Wang Cheng, a professor at Peking University Law School.
Taking users’ privacy and feelings into consideration, Internet companies such as Google and Sina Weibo have offered services to help users deal with their digital legacy.
Is it possible to get everything deleted? Yes! The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation went into effect in 2018. It said people have a right to erase(清除)personal data, which is also known as “the right to be forgotten”.
How will you deal with it? Would you like your digital legacy to be inherited or deleted? Here are some answers from teenagers. ☆Zhou Caiyan, 15, Hangzhou, Zhejiang I guess I would like to pass on my digital legacy to my family members. I have so many beautiful memories there. They would be something that they can take a look at when they miss me. But everyone has some things that they don’t want to share with others. So I will first look through all the information and delete those things. ☆Li Yan, 14, Lanzhou, Gansu I prefer my digital legacy to be deleted. Though I leave so many unforgettable footprints(足迹)on different sites, they are what I think when I am alive. When I leave the world, my family members will feel sad. 随着时间的流逝,他们悲伤的感觉会消失。But if I leave my digital legacy to them, they might feel sad again every time they look at the things. |
2. Who owns your online accounts?
3. How many Internet companies have offered services to help users deal with their digital legacy in the passage?
4. What are the common ideas for Zhou Caiyan and Li Yan?
5. Please translate the underlined sentence into English.
6. What will you do with your digital legacy in the future?
Professional titles (职称) are often given to college-educated personnel or well-trained workers in professions such as doctors and reporters. But now they’re also given to farmers in China.
Shijiazhuang in Hebei province asked local farmers to apply for junior and senior professional titles in October, 2022. So far, the city’s Luquan district has taken the lead in recognizing (认可) seventeen farmers with junior technical positions. The positions include livestock technicians and farming engineers.
Other provinces such as Shandong, Yunnan and Hunan have similar policies. Anning in Yunnan, for example, has awarded more than 2,000 farmers such titles.
Applying for professional titles for farmers doesn’t require education or academic papers. It mainly looks at the size of their farming practices and their businesses’ effect, Su Jia, an official in Shijiazhuang, told Beijing News. Recognized farmers will enjoy subsidies (补助) and other support from the government.
Many people think working in the field is not a proper job and does not need third-party recognition. Giving farmers professional titles has shaken the fixed idea, China Daily noted. “The certificate (证书) is a recognition of their skills, and it can also be of help when they talk about business,” Su said.
Yu Jiang is one of the first seventeen farmers who received junior technical positions in Shijiazhuang. “I feel that China is paying more attention to farmers’ issues (问题), which strengthens my confidence to lead my cooperative members for common prosperity (富裕),” Yu told China News Service.
Recognizing farmers in this way is part of a larger move to push agriculture. The 2021 national census data (人口普查数据) showed China has more than 500 million people living in rural areas. The number was 808 million in 2000, however. China has been losing farmers due to urbanization (城市化).
