Showing off in London
A man in black clothes jumps high into the air. Before he lands, he strikes(摆出)a pose. Sometimes, he carries a red fan. With long white sleeves(袖子), he spreads his arms like wings. His dance is eye-catching, often attracting crowds.
He is Chinese dancer Ma Jiaolong. Since 2020, he’s made short videos of himself dancing in London. He has performed at the city’s parks and iconic landmarks(标志性建筑物)like Tower Bridge. The 35-year-old has nearly 5 million followers on Tik Tok(Douyin), where he shares his videos.
Classical Chinese dance combines(结合)martial arts(武术)movements with those of traditional Chinese opera. He started to learn it at 12. “I was attracted by the dancers who play ancient heroes through the movements of classical Chinese dance,” said Ma.
Later, Ma studied at the Beijing Dance Academy. Since 2019, he has been teaching classical Chinese dance at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Two years ago, Ma had to give online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In his small home, he could only make small moves. One day, he took his wife’s suggestion and danced at Greenwich Park, a popular tourist spot. She recorded Ma. He then made the video, added music and sent it to friends. “Surprisingly, they loved it, which inspired me to share it online,” said Ma.
Later, Ma made more short videos. He added his dance moves with dazzling(令人赞叹的)action. People are often curious about his performances. So, while dancing, he likes to communicate with them. As his videos went viral(走红), he received messages from people around the world.
“Now, making and sharing short videos has become a part of my life, and most importantly, a way to introduce classical Chinese dance to more people, especially overseas views,” said Ma.

What’s China like in the eyes of foreigners (外国人)? Is there anything that surprises them? The short video series, My China Surprise《中国让我没想到》 brings us some answers. Some episodes (集) have come out on Bilibili, Douyin and WeChat. Each episode tells a foreigner’s surprising experiences (经历) in China. Let’s check out three of them!
Beijing Opera fan
Lulu is from Hungary. She first came to Beijing in 2017. Here, she found her greatest hobby—Beijing Opera.
“The clothes were beautiful and the movements (动作) were so wonderful. The face-painting was something I never see before. It is quite different from Western opera, ”she said, “I love Beijing Opera. I hope I can share this passion (激情) of mine with people outside China.”
Now Lulu is in the Beijing Opera Group at Tsinghua University. The group members practice singing and movements twice a week and have another rehearsal (排练) on Fridays.
The biggest problem Lulu faced was learning the singing way. “In the beginning, my throat (嗓子) hurt, because I used my voice in the wrong way,” she said. But with the help of teachers, she has improved (改善) a lot.

Lifelong student
Merna, who is half Chinese, half Jordanian, is still surprised by colleges for the old people in China.
That was in 2021. She read an article about the colleges on WeChat and also saw a sign reading, “Laonian Daxue”. After talking with her friends, she got to know it means a school for old people to take classes and learn things like calligraphy (书法) and modeling.
Busy with schoolwork, she doesn’t have enough time to spend with her grandma in Beijing. So she is thinking about signing (报名) her grandma up for some classes. Once, she went to such a college. There, she met a 59-year-old lady in qipao to learn modeling. Seeing her positive (积极的) energy, she thinks such colleges can really make old people happy and give them a new start.

“I had to leave school when I was thirteen, if I had half the chances that you have, I’d…” Mr. Ridley was giving a lecture to his boy, Greg again. He was disappointed that Greg did poorly at school and didn’t allow him to play basketball anymore.
Feeling upset, Greg left home and wanted to go away. Suddenly, it rained heavily. Greg entered an old apartment. There he met a homeless old man named Lemon Brown.
As they talked, Greg learnt that Lemon was a singer before he met some hard times.
Now he was hiding there to protect his treasure from the bad men in the town. “ ▲ ” Greg asked.
“Actually, everyone gets a treasure.” Lemon Brown said. “You want to see mine?” “If you want to show me.” Greg replied.
Lemon carefully took the rags away from his right leg, there was a piece of plastic.
Then he took out some yellowed newspaper. “Here it is,” he said.
Greg looked at the clippings in surprise. All of them were reviews of shows Lemon had been in when he was young.
“I used to travel around and sing to make money for my family. When my son Jesse grew up to be a soldier. I had nothing to give him except these things that told him who I was, and where he came from.”
“Then what happened?” Greg asked.
“One time I went home and got a letter saying Jesse was killed in the war. The army sent back all the things Jesse used to carry around—those old clippings. That was my treasure, and when I give it to him, he treated it just like that, a treasure. Isn’t that something?”
“I guess so,” Greg said. “But you really think that treasure of yours was worth fighting against the bad guys?”
“As a boy, you’re sure to ask such a foolish question. What else can be more valuable than what a man can pass on to his son or daughter?” Lemon said as he put his treasure back in place.
The rain stopped then, Greg decided to go home. He believed Lemon would be OK with his memories and treasure.

In the competition, children let the pointed end of their egg hit the pointed end of their competitor’s egg. The children battle one by one and those whose eggs are broken will lose the game. The person who has the hardest egg is the champion (冠军).
The custom to check one’s weight started from the Three Kingdoms Period. It is said that Zhao Zilong left Liu Bei’s son, A Dou, to Mrs. Sun in Wu State on the day of Start of Summer. Two men stand at the bottom of a mountain, only finding ice and rock. Snow is falling, and an angry wind blows around. This is a place where nothing grows and no one lives. At 29,028 feet, the mountain Everest is higher even than the clouds.
It is 1953, and the two men at Everest are mountain climbers, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, who didn’t know each other a few months earlier. They want to be the first to reach the very top of Everest. Before, men have tried and failed ten times. Nineteen climbers have already died. Hillary and Tenzing know how dangerous Everest is.
Now the moment has come. To reach the top, Hillary and Tenzing are about to risk everything. With everything they need which weighs 22,000 pounds, other members of the exploring team, and 450 Sherpas hired to help, they set out on March 10.
It is May 29. They come out of the tent at 6:30 looking more like astronauts. With eight layers of their warmest clothing, three pairs of gloves around their hands, and special boots to protect their feet from freezing, each man carries 40 pounds.
They start again and climb over a dangerous ridge. It’s almost at the top. Suddenly, a black wall of smooth rock blocks their path, and there’s no way around it.
Then Hillary has an idea! There’s long crack in the wall just wide enough to get into. He goes first, connected to Tenzing by rope. One side of the crack is ice - if it break off, Hillary will be left hanging on the rope. If Tenzing can’t hold him, they both might drop off.
It takes Hillary a half hour to make it through. After Tenzing also makes it, they head even higher. Each step they take feels like a mile. Then they reach another narrow dangerous ridge. There’s a drop of eight thousand feet on the left. The right is even worse, with ten thousand feet down! They know each step could be their last.
After the ridge, there’s a bump of snow ahead. It’s the top! They struggle toward it. They are not going to stop. They step onto the top. They make it—first to the roof of the world!
