When storm clouds gather, and the wind blows strongly, most people choose to stay at home. But some run toward the danger. Photographer Liu Yijing is one of them, as he records nature’s anger with his camera.
His latest work was a perfect shot of a complete supercell (单体) storm in Inner Mongolia on August 22. 2021. Earlier this month the picture was picked as the cover photo for Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, one of the most important journals in its field.
The supercell is a type of storm that can last a long time and travel long distances. And it usually comes with dangerous weather conditions, including damaging hailstones (冰雹) and winds.
Since 2020, recording storms has become the primary focus of Liu’s life. For the past year Liu, 21, has traveled about 24, 000 kilometers across 11 regions in China as he tries to watch and record thunderstorms.
While a storm may be beautiful in a certain sense, for most farmers storms mean serious trouble for their livelihoods. During one of his photo schools in 2020, a local farmer told Liu in tears that storms had damaged his crops, injured his herds(牧群)and destroyed his houses. The young man suddenly realized that the things he loves can bring disaster to others.
As a result, he decided to do something to help the public better understand storms and their influence on people’s lives. He has tried to explain the danger of storms through videos on social media platforms. He also calls on everyone to take action to help prevent climate change.
“I hope my efforts can help people better understand nature,” Liu said.

There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took out a few coins and dropped them into the hat. He then turned the sign around and wrote something on it. He put the sign back and walked away.
Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and ask, “Are you the one who changed my sign in the morning? What did you do?”
The man said, “I only wrote the truth in a different way.”
What he had written was, “Today is a beautiful day, but I can’t see it.”
Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply told people to help by putting some money in the hat. The second one told people that they were able to enjoy the beauty of the day, but the boy could not enjoy it because he was blind.
The first sign simply said the boy was blind, while the second one told people they were so lucky that they were not blind.

The tea bag was invented in 1908 by Thomas Sullivan, an American tea seller. He was sending out free tea in silk bags for people to try. People put the bags together with the tea leaves into the cup and added hot water. The tea tasted good, and people thought it was easy to clean the cup. They were not happy when Sullivan started sending them loose (散的) tea again.
Sullivan realized that he had a hot new thing in his hands, and he built a machine to pack the bags. As tea bags became popular, they were changed from silk to gauze (薄纱) and later paper. In 1952, Lipton Tea made the tea bag even more popular with its invention of the four-sided tea bag.

A black line of paint curves (变弯) on the wall, suddenly turning into a colorful smiling cat—the line is the tail. This is a good example of graffiti (涂鸦) art.
Graffiti art is drawings and writing that are painted onto walls, usually in public spaces. Because it’s simple to do, graffiti has been around for centuries, with drawings being found on ancient buildings.
But modern graffiti was born out of hip-hop culture in the 1960s, mainly in New York. With its growth throughout the years, it has now entered popular culture. Graffiti can be seen in galleries (展览馆) around the world, next to other artworks. Modern graffiti attracts young artists and fans.
However, there are laws on graffiti in most countries. You must have permission from the owner of the wall before painting on it. If not, you may face a big fine. Instead, some cities have graffiti walls where people can draw freely. Berlin, Germany, is home to a lot of graffiti. It’s often called the graffiti capital of the world. Writing and drawings make the old city walls like an outdoor art gallery.

Xu Beihong(1895-1953) was important in modern Chinese folk art. During his lifetime, he developed the tradition of combining(融合) poetry with painting. Across this painting, named Racing Horse, we can see a horse running at high speed like a missile across the sky. Xu cleverly drew in black ink to show the moving hair on the horse’s mane and tail.
Qi Baishi(1863-1957) was one of China’s greatest painters. He drew simple pictures from everyday life, such as vegetables, flowers, birds, and insects. Cabbage is a well-known example of Qi’s works. The tiny insect near the cabbage has some red on its back. Its black eyes, which are fixed on the cabbage, show the creature’s interest in the vegetable. Qi Baishi’s style of painting often leaves the audience guessing and makes them use their imagination.
Chen Yifei(1946-2005) was a very successful artist. His soft portraits (肖像) of beautiful women are very valuable. In 1997, one of his paintings sold for US $503,000. The painting, named Poppy, is a typical example of Chen’s style. In the painting, a young woman sits alone and is deep in thought. Her hand holding the fan is elegantly positioned on the table.
