Labor Education Recently, the Ministry of Education has released the new curriculum standard for labor education in compulsory (义务) education. China’s public schools will soon ask students to put down their books and electronic devices and pick up brooms and kettles. The standard has made labor education an independent course and students will take courses on labor skills at least once a week starting from the next term. ____________________ Have you grown taller and stronger? On May 3, the Ministry of Education brought out the results of the eighth national health survey for students from elementary school through college and university. The survey comes out every five years. This year’s survey showed Chinese students’ overall (总的) health and fitness have improved since 2017. For example, the height of boys and girls increased 1.69 cm and 0.97 cm respectively in the age group of 13 to 15. More time for my favorite The “double reduction” policy really helps me. Our homework is clearly less than before. I can finish it at school with no need to take it home. Instead, I can review or preview school work when I’m home. Besides, teachers now teach at a much slower pace so that we have enough time to understand what we have learned. We don’t need to buy workbooks anymore and the exercises are mainly from the textbook. I’m also happy to find there are fewer exams. |

John: Sometimes, I meet some adults. I have nothing to chat with them. What should I do? | David: If you don’t like talking with them, skip it. And look for some information you like. But sometimes, adults may give you some useful advice. |
George: If they want to visit my home or invite me to their homes, what should I do? | David: If you want to see them, make sure that at least one of your parents can go to meet them, too. Inviting them to your house is good, or let a parent take you over to their houses. Be sure you have a parent along with you. |
Victor: Then, what else should we pay attention to? | David: If someone asks you not to tell your parents about him/her, you must tell your parents at once. If they don’t tell you much about themselves, maybe they’re not the ones they say they are. |

In some modern countries, it has been fashionable to think that by free education for all, one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough, and we find in such countries a larger number of people with university degree refuse to do what they think “low” work. In fact, working with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor. We can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns.
In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way. Firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability. Secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that it is very bad to be ashamed(耻辱) of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.

Several years ago, Kang Yu arrived at the village school as a teaching volunteer. He found these children didn’t know how to express their emotions (情绪) properly. To give an outlet (发泄途径) for their emotions, Kang began to teach them to write poetry (诗). At first, the children didn’t even know what poetry was. After a few months, more and more students fell in love with writing poems.
Kang was surprised that when writing poetry, students were a little different. In the past, they liked making trouble in class. But gradually they became quiet in poetry class. In their poems, sometimes they wrote about loneliness and sadness when missing their parents. And sometimes they wrote happy memories around them. A boy who spent little time with his father handed in a poem: “Ten years later, I want to be a father like the sea, and I’ll let my children sit on my back, which is like a boat for them.” These young poets (诗人) became better at writing poems.
Poetry cannot help children solve their problems in life, but at least students can take poetry writing as a way to express their emotions and see the beauty in life. “When children love life, it is possible for them to reduce pain or find new happiness,” said Kang.

From Sept.1, 2021, students at primary and middle schools across China had a different new term. They were surprised to find there were more activities after 3:30 p.m. They could enjoy arts, traditional culture, science and technology activities without leaving school. The highest water level in the region in more than 50 years will leave “a permanent (永久的) mark on the city,” Brugnaro said.“Now, the government must listen,” he added. “These are the effects of climate change——the costs will be high.”
The waters in Venice peaked at 1.87m, according to the tide (潮水) monitoring center. Since official records began in 1923, only once has it been higher, when it reached 1.94m in 1966. St. Mark’s Square-one of the lowest parts of the city - was one of the worst-hit areas. St. Mark’s Basilica was flooded for the sixth time in 1,200 years. According to church records, four of these floods happened within the past 20 years.
Brugnaro said the damage had been “devastating” “The situation is dramatic. We are asking the government to help us,” he said, adding that schools would remain closed until the water level subsided. He also urged local businesses to post photos and videos online. This, he said, would be used for asking for financial (财政的) help from the government.
A number of businesses were affected. In shops, workers tried to move their goods away from the water to prevent any further damage. One shopkeeper, who was not named, told Italy’s public broadcast Rai, “The city is on its knees.” Even though three waterbuses had been sunk as a result of the flooding, tourists tried to continue their sightseeing. The coast redwood is the unchallenged tallest of North American's trees. But do you know it grows from a seed (种子) that is smaller than a pea?
What's special about redwoods?
Redwoods are special for a couple of reasons. The first is their size. Imagine standing next to a tree which is the height of a 30-floor building. The second is their age. Redwoods usually grows to about 600 years old. Some are even more than 2000 years old.
Where do redwoods grow?
To find a coast redwood, you'll have to go to Oregon or California. The land along the west coast, about 450 miles long and up to 35 miles wide, is home to the redwoods. Coast redwoods do not grow anywhere else in the world.
Why do redwoods grow there?
The coast of the Pacific Ocean provides a special environment for the redwoods. Cool, wet air comes from the ocean and keeps the trees wet all year. That is important because most of the rain falls between October and May. During the dry summer months, the trees depend on the wet air over the coast.
How do redwoods survive?
Redwoods have a couple of protection systems(系统). The skin of an adult redwood tree can grow to as thick as 12 inches. The thick covering protects the lower part of the tree from fire damage. Also, most of a redwood's branches and leaves are high up on the tree. This keeps them safe from forest fires. Redwoods are safe from insect damage because the wood has a bitter-tasting chemical.
What should I do?
If you ever get a chance, visit a redwood forest. Look among the tree trunks and imagine who might have camped there a thousand years ago. Look upward and just imagine how high the trees might grow if we protect them.
1. To see a redwood tree, you should go to _______.A.the west coast of North America |

D.anywhere in the world |
A.Rain fall. | B.Sea water. | C.Wet air. | D.Ocean life. |

But when we come to the question “how much time do they actually spend on media(传播媒介)daily?”, the answer is surprising: young people spend about nine hours every day using media, and this only includes media used for enjoyment.
Today’s young people seem to have become crazy multitaskers. They often use media when doing other activities. Some watch TV when doing homework, some text, and some others listen to music. But what do young people think of this? A survey showed that two thirds of them believed watching TV or texting had no influence on their schoolwork. Half of them thought using social media made no difference. However, researches have given a different answer: “media multitaskers” did worse in tests.
Scientists did research among more than 400 students. It showed that those who texted a lot had more trouble sleeping and did worse in their study. In another research, students who didn’t text during a lesson took down a lot more notes than those who were texting. Similar research also found that students who texted when doing schoolwork had lower overall(总体的)grades.
According to research, if a kid uses social media a lot, especially at night, he or she will sleep worse and feel more nervous and depressed. On the one hand, young people stay up late to check messages and information. They may also be woken up by messages they receive. On the other hand, even the light from a screen could influence their sleep. Some other researches also show that children who use media at night go to bed later, get fewer hours of sleep each week, and become sleepy more easily during the daytime.
