Do you think England teaches math the same way as China does? The answer is yes!
In England, we have math lessons very similar to what kids have in China. During each lesson, our teacher teaches us about a new math concept(概念). Later, we finish either a worksheet or a booklet to improve our understanding. We have a test once every term to see how much we have learned.
But things were a little different in Year 7. We didn’t do any end-of-year exams. We did something different—a math test to form “sets”. What does set mean? In each class of 26 students, only 30 percent will reach the top set. The other students will be in the medium set. To get into the top set, you need to get high scores on your math exams. With the set, teachers can pay more attention to a smaller group of students who are good at math. They can give them harder questions to do.
I had my math sets exam on May 17th. It had two parts, A and B. For Part A, we had 40 minutes. It was mainly arithmetic(算术) and questions about numbers. For Part B, we had 50 minutes to answer problem-solving questions.
I got into the top set. It is true that the lessons are much harder. But with the teacher’s help, I always get good grades. I like it because it makes me more competitive(有竞争力的).

Dreams may make you smart. This was discovered by scientists who do research on dreams.
What is a dream exactly? Scientists explain that during sleep time your brain reviews your experiences in the day. It tries to connect your new experiences with the old memories (记忆). As your brain connects things, it turns them into a story, and then you get a dream.
Dreams may help you deal with worries and fears. What has happened during the day may be painful. While you are sleeping, however, the brain will replay the painful memories in a safe dream space. There the bad memories become less painful. And you will feel better after waking up.
Dreams also seem to be able to help you learn. This idea is supported by a study. So scientists advise you not to stay up all night studying, especially when an exam is coming. They say a sweet dream might help you get higher marks.
Dreams may make you more creative, too. It was reported that a famous song writer came up with his best song in a dream, and wrote it down as soon as he woke up. However, dreams alone can't bring about creativity. In fact, the songwriter spent a lot of time thinking about the song before the dream. In a word, hard work matters more for creativity, though dreams also have a role to play.

3. Where does the brain replay the painful memories?

However, there is also right time to eat, sleep, exercise and take medicine. We cannot find the right time for these activities. The latest scientific finding shows that we must listen to the clock inside our bodies: the biological (生物的) clock.
Eva Green exercised every morning. She woke up at6:00 a.m. and ran about two miles before she went to work. But Eva's legs and back started to hurt. So she did some exercise before running. She tried to run more slowly, but the pain didn't stop. Eva talked to her doctor. The doctor said, "Don't run in the morning. Try to exercise later in the day. That is the time when your body is at the right temperature for exercise." She did as the doctor said, and her legs and back didn't hurt any more.
Today, doctors are leaning more about the chronobiology (时间生物学), the study of the biological clock. They are learning about the importance of time to our bodies. For example, it is best for people to go to sleep on time every night and to eat only when they're hungry. Also, doctors discover that some illnesses, such as heart attacks, occur (发生) most often in the morning. This information tells them that the best time to take heart medicine may be at night. When patients take heart medicine at night, they may prevent a heart attack in the morning.
Many doctors believe chronobiology can help us live healthier lives. It may be the right time to listen to these doctors!

A master of English education in China, Chen Lin just celebrated his 100th birthday in April. Chen has spent his whole life on English education.
In 1950, Chen started teaching at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU). He was known as the “Professor of Three Ups”. He always put importance on “standing up” and “speaking up” in his classes. He always stood to teach and talked loudly. When class was over, he would “shut up” at once.
Chen’s good teaching impressed students. Li Jinzhao, one of Chen’s students and a teacher at BFSU now, said Chen likes role-playing and singing to make the class active. It was different from the “teacher speaks, students listen” style of the time. He also encouraged students to speak more and practice more.
In 1999, Chen led experts to make English curriculum standards. Before that, English teaching goals from primary school to university didn’t connect well with each other. But the standards changed it. Then, English education worked like “one package (一条龙)”. He also wrote the first set of textbooks to carry out the new standards.
After leaving his job, Chen keeps on working. He reads and writes about how to improve English teaching. He once said, “I have been a teacher all my life, and I want to be an English teacher again in my next life.”

American Students
American students spend seven hours in their school every day. And the day is divided into classes of about 40 to 50 minutes. Students study English, history, maths, science, art and foreign languages. They go to listen different lessons taught by different teachers in different classrooms. After class they learn job skills. Sometime they study by working in an office, a hospital or other places once a week.
German Students
German students love practicing. Lots of schools have lessons for only half a day. They spend most time practicing. Teachers give students enough freedom (自由). Students may try all kinds of ideas they have. They begin to plan what they will do in the future and work hard at a young age.

Guess a new word’s meaning in the sentence. This is a basic language skill for students. There is an example: When you first meet the new English word “insist”, you can guess its meaning in the sentence, “His mother didn’t allow him to go with us, but he insisted on coming with us.”
Cooperate with partners. Work with other language learners to improve language skills. When you need to practice spoken English and try to have a real communication, you’d better find a partner to work in group.
Know about background knowledge before reading. Try to find more information about the passage and its writer. It is useful for us to understand the main idea, writing purpose and also the feelings of the writer.
Make a note of what you should improve. It is more important to know where you are but not what you know. In this way, you can find what you need to improve and further find a way to improve your study. This is also the most important ability for self-study.
It’s important for learners to know about different strategies. In fact, more able learners use different kinds of learning strategies.

And there are more pets than children in the United States! The most popular pets are dogs and cats. And other popular pets are fish, birds, and rabbits.
For many Americans, they are part of the family. Many owners sleep with their dogs or cats. Some people carry their pets while travelling in other countries during vacation. And the cost to fly with a pet is about $125 each way, and that’s really expensive.
It is healthy for people to keep pets. A loving dog or cat can lower a person’s blood pressure. Also, pets are a kind of comfort to lonely people.
Animals need a lot of attention. Before you buy a pet, it is important to be completely prepared. You need to be a patient person. And you also need to make sure that your family members are suitable for your pet. For example, are you or your family members allergic(过敏的) to pets? Is this a good animal for children? Lastly, you should consider whether pets are allowed to live with you.
It is important to understand that a pet is a long-term responsibility and a long-term friend.
