It is commonly seen that students take pictures of teachers blackboard-writing using their smart phones. This starts a discussion on whether taking a picture can take the place of taking notes.

Among those in the photo—taking camp, some can’t read their own handwriting. So it’s best to take a picture of teachers’ writing so that they can understand the notes. Some take pictures of notes because they know the phone is a safe place to store information. They may lose paper, but they may not lose their phones. Some take photos because they want to record exact words that have been written on the blackboard.

It may be convenient to use phones as note takers, but is a picture a replacemen(替代品)for the process of note-taking?

Taking notes may be an old-fashioned way, but a way which has a long history doesn’t mean it’s out of date. Taking notes is a traditional way to help make preparations for getting and understanding information. Teachers encourage students to take notes because the act of doing so is more than only recording necessary information—it requires students to ask questions about what they don’t know. The act of writing information down forces(强迫)the brain to begin to memorize something new.

I’m not sure which way is better. For now, I allow students to take notes however they see fit—handwritten or photographed —because I think that some notes, no matter what way of note-taking, are better than none.

Can taking a picture take the place of taking notes? Here is a discussion about it. Those who take a picture of teachers’ writing think they can understand the notes better. And phones are much     1     to store information. Taking photos can also record words that have been written on the blackboard     2    . However, some people think taking notes is helpful. It not only records necessary information, but also     3     students to ask questions. Besides, taking notes     4     writing the information down makes the brain to memorize new things. Handwritten or photographed are both good     5    , because some notes are better than none.

Animals like elephants, beavers and ants could not seem more different. Yet they have one important thing in common: they are what scientists call “ecosystem (生态系统) engineers.” As they go about their daily business of living, they change their own living environments. This is good not only for themselves, but many others as well.

Ants

Ants have a great influence on the environment. They help to keep the soil (土壤) healthy by stirring it around and digging tunnels (挖隧道) that let in air and water. They also help to transport water and other important things to the roots of plants. Ants take care of the trees by clearing weeds and eating the eggs of some insects. What’s more, they keep the ground clear of the bodies of smaller dead animals.

Elephants

Elephants are an excellent example of an ecosystem engineer. They play a big part in looking after the health of the environment.

By digging up grass and knocking over large trees, elephants make more space for other animals and some plants. This enables some small plants to get more water and sunshine. Elephants sometimes use their tusks (象牙) to dig dirt out of dry riverbeds, creating waterholes for other animals to drink. When they walk through the forest in groups, they always leave large footprints. When it rains, water fills the footprints and they become places in which frogs and insects lay eggs.

Beavers

Beavers are among the most hard-working ecosystem engineers, and they are always busy with their building work. They use their large front teeth to cut down some older trees, which clears the way for new growth and then create dams (水坝) to make ponds (池塘)—their favorite place to live. The pond provides beavers a place to get away from danger and to live. It is also a perfect home for other wildlife like birds, fish, frogs, turtles and some plants.

Beavers often build their house—which is called a lodge, in the middle of the pond or on the river bank. Inside the lodge, they have one area for storing their food, and another higher dry area for sleeping. The mud walls of the lodge help keep it warm in winter.

These are only a few of the best-known ecosystem engineers in natural world— others can be found almost everywhere!

Known as the mother river by all the Chinese people, the 5, 464-kilometer(about 3, 395 miles)Yellow River is the second longest in China after the Yangtze River. This great river begins in Kunlun Mountains in northwestern Qinghai Province and it runs all the way to the Bohai Sea. This river is a melting port, because there are more than 30 branches and countless streams feeding it through its course. The upper part of the river starts in Qinghai Province to Hekouzhen in Inner Mongolia. This great river flows quietly, like a shy girl in this section, irrigating the farmlands and feeding the people. Its middle reaches ends at Taohuayu in Zhengzhou City, Henan Province. Here the river splits the Loess Plateau(黄土高原)in half, forming the longest continuous gorge in the whole drainage area of the river. The lower reaches ends in a delta(三角洲)on the Bohai Sea.

It is agreed by almost all the Chinese people that the Yellow River is the spiritual home of the Chinese people. It is the waters of the river and its spirit that nurture the whole Chinese nation. For thousands of years, this river has been admired by great writers, artists, as well as by the common people.
