I am my mother’s third girl. When I was born, the doctor gently explained to my mother that my left arm was missing, below the elbow(胳膊,肘). Then he gave her some advice, “Don’t treat her any differently from other girls.” And she did!
There were five girls in our family and we all had to help out. Once when I was about seven, I came out of the kitchen, “Mum, I can’t peel potatoes. I only have one hand.” “You get back to peel potatoes, and don’t ever use that as an excuse for anything again!”
Of course I could peel potatoes—with my good hand and my other arm. “Jenny, if you try hard enough,” she said, “you can do anything.”
Once in the second grade, our teacher had each of us race across the monkey bar(攀爬架). When it was my turn, I said no. Some kids laughed. I went home crying.
The next afternoon Mum took me back to the school playground. “Now, pull up with your right arm,” she advised. She praised (表扬)me when I made progress. I’ll never forget when I was crossing the bar, the kids were standing there with their mouths open.
It was the way with everything. Mum had the courage(勇气)to face anything, and she taught me I could, too.

Sure, it’s hard to see uncertainty(不确定) in such positive(积极的)light when you’re out of work, or when you feel like you’re failing. But uncertainty is really another word for chance.
When Allison graduated from Harvard, she had chances all over the place but had no idea what she wanted to do. She took a job in consulting(咨询), but she knew she wouldn’t stay there. She took the GRE and scored so high that she was able to increase her income(收入)by teaching students. Still, she didn’t think she wanted to go to graduate school(研究院). Allison knew she wasn’t doing what she wanted, but she didn’t know what she wanted.
She worried. All her friends were going to graduate school or starting their own businesses. She was lost and felt that she would never find anything out. After six years, Allison, by having a general(全面的)plan in mind, got married, moved to the Midwest, and used her consulting experience to get a great job. Allison realized that she spent her years finding her way: time well spent.
The only way to lead an interesting life is to face uncertainty. Otherwise your life is not your own—it is a path someone else has chosen. Moments of uncertainty are when you create your life, when you become who you are. Uncertainty usually begins with a job hunt, but it doesn’t end there. When I opened it, I read: “A nice piece of writing on the Tigers. Well done! Go on!” It was signed by Don Wolfe, the sports editor. Because I was not confident at that time, his words couldn’t have been more encouraging. Later, when I got to know him, I learned that Don made a habit of writing encouraging words to others. “When I make others feel good about themselves,” he told me, “I feel good, too.”
Over the years, I’ve tried to copy the example of Don Wolfe and other friends who care enough to write encouraging words, because I think they are doing something important. We all need a boost from time to time, and a few lines of praise may turn around a day, even a life.
Why, then, are there so few note writers like Don Wolfe? My guess is that many are afraid they’ll be misunderstood or sound strange. Also, writing takes time; it’s far easier to make a phone call. The disadvantage with phone calls, of course, is that they don’t last long. A note is a matter of record, and the note can be read more than once and valued.
What does it need to write notes that life spirits and warm hearts? Only a willingness to express our appreciation (欣赏). Be ready to give your praise. Your words may not only make a difference to others, but they can make a difference to yourself. As Don Wolfe said, making others feel good about themselves makes me feel good too.

If you find that you have problems getting on with your classmates or friends, the most important thing to learn is tolerance. Tolerance is the ability to realize and respect(尊敬)the differences in others. We cannot change the way that other people do, so it is important to learn to live happily with them.
Tolerance will make everyone get on better with each other. Getting to know someone may help you understand why they do things differently. Something different does not exactly mean that it is bad. Tolerance teaches us to keep a temperate and an open mind.
You need to remember an old saying, “Treat others how you want to be treated.” If you tolerate something, it does not mean that you have to like it. No one is asking you to change who you are or what you believe in. Tolerance just means that you should respect the differences in others and not to try to make them change.
It is important to practice tolerance, because it will make everyone’s life easier. Learn to accept(接受)people for their different abilities and interests. The world is very different, and practicing tolerance in your own school and city can help make a difference.

Steve taught me to face the results of my behavior. Once when I returned in tears from a Saturday baseball game, it was Steve who took some time to ask me what happened. When I told him that my baseball broke Mrs. Holt’s basement window, Steve encouraged me to tell her the truth. After all, I played basement in a wrong place. As I explained to Mrs. Holt, my voice shook. Of course, I had to pay for the broken window from my pocket money.
I also learned from Steve that personal property (财产) is a sacred(神圣的) thing. After I found a shiny pen in my fifth-grade classroom, I wanted to keep it. Then Steve explained that it might be important to the loser although it had little value. He also reminded me of how sad I was when I lost the small wooden dog my father made. At last, I returned the pen to my teacher, Mrs. Davids. I still remembered the smell of her perfume(香水) when she gave a hug.
Of all the lessons Steve gave me, his respect for life is the most vivid in my mind. When I was twelve, I killed an old brown bird in the garden with a gun. With excitement, I asked Steve to come from the house to take a look. I shall never forget the way he stood for a long moment and stared at the bird on the ground. Then in a dead, quiet voice, he asked, “Did it hurt you first, Mark?” I didn’t know what to answer. He continued with his eyes firm, “Even if it hurts you first, you should think a long time and then decide whether you will kill it or not.” I really felt terrible then, but that moment I will never forget.

Wu made the guide for her parents. “My parents are getting old. They need an easy way to learn how to use technology,” she said.
Wu’s experience is usual nowadays. Around the world, 40 per cent of parents learn about new technologies, including computers, mobile Internet and social media(媒体), from their children, according to a study.

The young generation usually acts as a bridge between their families and the new environment. When they teach their parents new technologies, parents can learn the new world by themselves.

When I was younger, bedtime was always my favourite part of the day. Wearing soft pajamas(睡衣裤) and with Lan, my stuffed monkey, in my arms, I felt no pressure at all.
I named Lan after my uncle when I compared Lan’s long arms and legs to his. One night I ran up to Uncle Lan at a family party and told him I had named my monkey after him. His eyebrows wrinkled in confusion, then a chuckle(哈哈大笑) escaped his lips. I guess he didn’t understand how important it was to me.
Even if Uncle Lan didn’t think my monkey was special, I certainly did. I dressed him in a white baby nightgown. My mother thought that Lan was the best-dressed stuffed animal in the world. Yes, he was certainly a fashionable creature. The strong cologne(科隆香水) I used on him years ago makes him still smell “pretty”.
For a long time, Lan went everywhere with me. He was my best friend, and I told him everything. But when I turned twelve, I realized I was too old for stuffed animals. I thought people would think I was babyish, so I put him in the cupboard with the rest of my teddy bears and dolls. I begged him to understand why I was doing this, but at the same time I longed to talk to him again.
It took me several years to realize that it was OK to miss Lan. I know now that maturity doesn’t only mean growing up and taking on more responsibility. It also means holding on to your childhood and acting young sometimes.
Lan has been with me since I was six years old. Holding him in my arms connects me to my past and my present as I continue to grow and understand myself.

If anyone asks me for help, I always say “Yes!” “Can you help me with English practice?” Grace asked me on the first day after she became my deskmate. “Of course.” I replied without hesitation (犹豫). Grace has been working really hard on her studies and she needed my help though I didn’t have much time left for her.
One day after school, while I was doing my homework, Grace’s phone call came. She complained (抱怨) a lot and it made me feel bored, but I still felt bad about saying no. When Grace ended the call, it was 00:15 a. m. But I had homework left and I wanted to sleep. This was bad for a junior high school student in Grade Three who is going to take an important exam this June.
Finally I began to cry. I felt so tired and realized that the stress had an effect on my health. I tried to get myself out. Studying is more important than other things, so Grace has to come second. Now it’s important for me to say no, no, no.
“Can you give me a hand?” Grace asked. “Sorry... I just have to review (复习) my chemistry notes,” I answered. “All right. It’s up to you,” she said. I felt completely (完全地) relaxed when I heard her reply. Anyway, it’s not so hard to say no at all.
To be honest, I have felt much happier since learning to refuse. I have more time to spend on my studies at present. I still try my best to help others, but sometimes I say no because I know everyone has a limit (极限).

We talked about the fantastic trip, looking at the stars. “It’s a pity we don’t know which stars we’re looking at, Jenny,” said Nancy. “I know some of them,” I answered. Nancy felt surprised when I finally finished telling her all the names I knew.
My interest in stars began when I was eight. My aunt took me to a planetarium (天文馆). A guide showed us the groups of stars and told us stories about how they got their names. The stories were wonderful.
Everyone knows we can see the stars better when it’s not cloudy, but lots of people don’t realize that a bright moon also stops us seeing very much. I always look for the Plough (北斗星), because once I see that, I can find the North Star and other stars.
I wanted to learn more about the stars, so I took a course at the club. There are so many lights in the city that we have to go into the countryside to see any stars. I’m planning to make videos about stars in the countryside. I’ll post them online for everyone to watch. My great dream is to be an astronaut and I wish I could have a space travel.

When my parents wheeled me out of the hospital, I felt like I had been pieced back together like a doll with my “new legs”. They hurt so badly that all I could think was what I could do with these things. Tears streamed down my face. I was completely emotionally (情绪上) broken.
But I knew I had to let go of the old Amy and learn to welcome the new Amy. Four months later I was back up on a snowboard, although things didn’t go quite as expected: My legs went flying down the mountain, and I was on top of the mountain still. I was so discouraged. But I knew that if I could find the right pair of legs, I would be able to do this again. And this is when I learned that difficulties we met would bring two kinds of results: stop us on the road or ▲ .
I did a year of research, but still couldn’t find out what kind of legs to use, so I decided to make a pair myself. It was these legs and the best 21st birthday gift I could ever receive—a new kidney (肾) from my dad—that allowed me to follow my dreams again. I started snowboarding, then I went back to work.
In 2005, I founded an organization for youth and young adults with physical disabilities so they could join in sports. From there, I had the opportunity to go to South Africa, where I helped to put shoes on thousands of children’s feet so they could attend school. With my effort, I got three World Cup gold medals which made me the highest ranked female snowboarder in the world.
Twenty-six years ago, when I lost my legs, I had no idea what to expect. But my legs haven’t disabled me. They’ve forced me to depend on my imagination and to believe in the possibilities, because in my mind, we can do anything and we can be anything!
