“More young people should have science lessons at school and university(大学).” Hazel Wallace, a Science teacher from London, said at a meeting for university students last weekend. “Science can change the world and make people live better. We need more people who want to teach science.”
But there was bad news from Dr. Benson, a university Science teacher. “There’s a real problem with Science teaching in schools. About 35%physics(物理) teachers in schools don’t have a physical degree(物理学学位). Not enough people are studying Science at university and this means that there are not enough science teachers.”
Mrs. Wallace didn’t agree. “It’s true that the number of Science pupils fell between 2000 and 2010,” she said. “But now the numbers are going up again. The number of students who study science lessons at school is much higher now than it was in 2010.”
Dr. Benson thought that numbers were still too low, “We should interest 12-16 years old in studying Science. There’s still a problem with science lessons in UK classrooms. Some of them are too difficult or boring for students. As for teachers, old ways of teaching have to change. We must change the way most young people think about Science. Science can also be fun. Students can take part in more science activities at school. ”

Whether it is for a special festival, to express thanks or to just let someone know that you care about them, giving gifts is a common custom. The purpose of giving gifts may be similar, but the traditions are different from country to country. A gift of respect in one place may be considered rude in another. Take a look at three gift-giving traditions.
India
If you are invited to someone’s home in India, you should bring a small gift, whether it’s a box of chocolates or some flowers. Gifts shouldn’t be wrapped(包裹)in black or white colors, because they are considered unlucky. Instead, use bright colors such as green, red or yellow. When giving money for any occasion(仪式), it should have an odd number(奇数)value. That’s believed to bring good luck. Instead of receiving a gift with both hands, Indians generally only use their right hand because left hands are considered unclean.
Japan
For most Japanese, the ritual(礼节)of giving presents is more important than the gifts themselves. The correct way is to present or receive gifts with both hands. Every gift should be wrapped. That’s because uncovered gifts are considered disrespectful. To show politeness and thanks, those who are receiving the gift may turn it down once or twice before finally accepting it. Gifts should be given in pairs, but four should be avoided just like in China. Lucky numbers also include eight. Eight is said to ring prosperity(兴旺).
Native America
While it may be common for guests to prepare for hosts, this is different in Native American communities. From wedding(婚礼)to birthday celebrations, guests are the ones who receive gifts. Gifts are usually homemade arts and crafts(手工艺品)to show love, respect and thanks.

"Turn that tap off," a voice said loudly. Daisy looked round, but saw no one. "Turn that tap off. You're wasting water," the voice sounded again.
"Who…who are you?" "I'm water. It's not easy for me to get here. Do you know where I'm from?"
"From the tap, of course." said Daisy.
"Yes, yes, but before that?" the voice said. "24 days ago, I was in a cloud in Jiangxi. Then the cloud dropped me into a stream and I ran down the mountain into the Yangtze River (扬子江). It carried me to a lake. I stayed there for a few days, and then I travelled a long way and ran into the Huangpu River. Then it was time to get cleaned up. "
"Cleaned up?" Daisy was surprised.
"Yes. I was dirty after my journey, so they took me to a water factory. They gave me a cleaning and added some chemicals (化学品) to me. Then I travelled in the pipes under the streets. I waited there until you called me, and here I am. "
Daisy said, "So this is the end of your journey."
"No. When you've finished with me, I'll go to a sewage plant (污水处理厂). Then they'll pour me into the river and I'll be back in the sea again. "
"Again?"
"Yes. That's where I came from in the first place. Remember not to waste me or make me dirty. I' m precious (珍贵)like gold. See you. "
"Wait a minute. What do you mean by that?" But there was no answer. The water left.

Humans can develop certain abilities we aren’t born with by practicing animals’ movements, the traditional Chinese Wushu lovers believed in the past-and still do today.
Chinese Five-Animal Exereises, also known as Wuqinxi, are the first complete set of qigong exercises following the movements of animals: monkeys, A birds, bears and tigers. They were created by one of the greatest doctors in Chinese history, Hua Tuo, more than 1,800 years ago.
The Five-Animal-Exercises (五禽戏) are well-designed to help blood circulation (循环), and let the energy go smoothly in the body so as to improve the health.
“The bear movements are good for the stomach. The tiger movements can reduce the pain in the back. The deer movements help reduce the fat around the waist. (B)The bird movements can help keep our knees health and the monkey movements can be good for the heart,” said Hua Yi, the 59th inheritor (继承人) of Wuqinxi.
For those new learners, the first few exercises might not go well. You may find it hard to focus. Wear comfortable clothes, keep peaceful in your mind, try to move slowly... Little by little, you’ll feel more and more harmonious with nature. You may even feel you become a tiger or a deer, walking in the forest freely.
(C)The Five-Animal- Exercises need no tools and they are easy to learn. You can search online for the videos and practice them at any time when you feel like relaxing your body and mind. Because it’s fun to practice and good for health, Five-Animal Exercises are becoming more and more popular in recent years, not only in China, but also in many other places of the world.

In 2016, Felix Bock, a doctoral student at the University of British Columbia, Canada, found out people threw away about 100,000 pairs of chopsticks every day in Vancouver alone. He felt the need to do something. So he started the company ChopValue in the same year. The company collected used chopsticks from restaurants, schools and shopping centers in Canada and the US and turned them into furniture and other artworks. Now in its fifth year, with the rapid growth of the company, Bock employs (雇用) 40 people, and using his special press machines, he has recycled 32 million pairs of chopsticks.
Bock takes pride in his work. And he hopes the idea behind ChopValue will help people rethink what they see as waste. “I believe every small action can help,” he said. “And I am happy that my business provides a new way for people.” Hundreds of restaurants across North America pay a small sum (金额) of money to Bock for the recycling of their used chopsticks. But when a whole school started to save food in their dining hall, there was a big change. At No.1 Middle School in Hunan Province, students are told to take no more food than they need. “There used to be 100 kg of food waste every day. But now, the amount of waste is down by 75 percent.” said the manager.
In China, people waste 35 million tons of food each year. That is enough to feed the whole country of South Korea for a year.
According to the United Nations, there are 820 million people who still live in hunger today. But every year, the world wastes 1.3 billion tons of food. That’s one third of all the food we have.
Food waste causes many problems. On the one hand, it is not only food that was wasted. There are also resources (资源) for growing, transporting (运输) and cooking the food. These all take energy, time and water. On the other hand, wasting food creates greenhouse gases (温室气体). So food waste is also bad for the environment.

Supermarkets throw away food that is not sold before its sell-by date, while families throw away food that they can’t finish eating. To stop food waste, some people have come up with great ideas. Take a look for yourself.
Buy less
One of the best ways to stop food waste is buying less food. There are millions of people around the world who still don’t have enough to eat. We should be more careful about how we shop for food.
Food bank
The world’s first food bank was started in the US in 1967. The bank took donations (捐赠) of food from people and stores that had extra food. People could then go to the food bank and take the food home if they could not afford to buy any for themselves. In Shanghai, there is a “shared fridge” in some communities. It stores (储存) food that is donated by nearby markets and restaurants. It is free for anyone to take.
Pay as you like
There is a sell-by date on the food bag. Before that date, the quality (质量) is the best. But after that date, the food can still be OK to eat. Therefore, a UK company called The Real Junk Food Project, brings this food from supermarkets to cafes and sell it. To get the food, you only need to give whatever money you like. If you don’t want to spend money, you can help work there. There are now 125 Real Junk Food cafes around the world. And the number is still growing.
1. Do people have to pay for the food from food banks?2. Where was the world’s first food bank started?
3. How can you get the food from the junk food café?
4. What else (其他的) can we do to stop food waste?
