Schools in China are studying how they can put VR (=virtual reality虚拟现实) lessons into their classroom experience. One such lesson uses VR to teach children fire safety. Instead of pens and paper, students wear VR headsets in the classroom. They are put into a virtual environment where a fire has broken out. They must find their way out and escape carefully.

At the VR medical school under Sichuan University, a virtual system allows medical students to examine human body in different ways. They can even separate the body for closer examination. Students can practice their operation skills without a real body.

Simon Leung, vice-chairman of a VR company, said the company has developed VR classrooms and computers that send students to a 360 degree digital world. Moreover, the VR headsets can tell whether children are focused on the task at hand, Leung said.

Chinese parents, however, have a different opinion on VR lessons. They are suspicious of VR because they are unsure if the technology will have any bad effects. They are worried about their children’s eye sight, too.

Besides, VR equipment comes at a high price. A top VR headset and computer could cost up to 10,000 yuan(1,475 U. S. dollars). “We need to do more to lower the cost and improve the user’s experience,” said Huang Ronghuai, professor at the Smart Learning Institute under Beijing Normal University, “But we are sure that we will change the model of education in the future.”

2. The VR medical school allows students to ________.
A.learn fire safety quicklyB.play games in a virtual environment
C.study harder than beforeD.practice skills without a real body
3. The underlined word “suspicious” in Paragraph 4 means ________.

A.To tell people how to build VR schools.

Do you ever worry about math when you’re at school? One important thing is to sit up straight when you’re taking your math exams, according to the scientists. Good posture (姿势) can help people feel more positive and careful. Sportsmen, musicians and public speakers can all get advantages from good posture.

We all know air pollution is bad for our health. But it can also harm us in other ways. Scientists have found that air pollution may lead to more crimes. According to a study of 86 million people in the US, the worse the air pollution was, the more violent crime (暴力犯罪) there was. Scientists think the small pieces and toxic gas (毒气) in air may affect people’s actions. This might make them more violent.

Can AI read our minds? This might not be far away. Scientists from Australia and Germany have developed a type of AI that can guess people’s feelings by tracking (跟踪) and studying their eye movements. This finding could make robots and computers better at understanding humans.

Believe it or not, sportsmen tend to have worse teeth. A study shows that half of the top athletes (运动员) have tooth problems. This seems strange. They usually pay more attention to their health than the rest of us. Scientists found that sports drinks and energy food can cause tooth problem. Most sportsmen use these products for energy. But they have a lot of sugar which is bad for teeth.

Robots are supposed to run on batteries, right? Well not all of them.

Scientists in England have built a kind of small robots that get their energy from dead flies, bad apples, or sugar.

One robot, called Slugbot, was even designed to hunt(猎取) garden slugs for dinner!

What’s up with all that food?

Well, scientists at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory want to invent robots that can operate for a long time in dark, dirty, or dangerous places.

Many of those spots, like the seafloor or Antarctica, don’t have electrical sockets(插座).

So inventor Chris Melhuish came up with a better idea: Build robots that get their energy just like animals do by hunting and eating food from their environment.

One robot, called Ecobot Ⅱ, could run for 12 days on a diet of eight flies! Of course, it’d still get a lot more power from one AA battery, though.

Melhuish says his team is now working on a new and improved robot, called Ecobot III, which will have a better digestion system.

It seems that after an eight-fly dinner, Ecobot II couldn’t deal with the leftover(剩下的) “waste”.

Maybe restrooms in the future will have signs for boys, girls, and robots.

1. An ordinary robot usually ________.
A.gets its energy from sugar
B.depends on batteries to work
C.can get food for itself
D.can work a few minutes without energy
2. From the passage, we can infer that a slug ________.
A.is a kind of insectB.is a kind of fish
C.can’t see SlugbotD.can eat Slugbot
3. What kind of robots do inventor Chris Melhuish want?
A.Robots that can provide people with food.
B.Robots that can work in dangerous places.
C.Robots that can get energy for themselves.
D.Robots that can be very small.
4. Which of the following is NOT true according to this passage?
A.Robots need to work in places that have no sockets for power.
B.Melhuish is not very satisfied with Ecobot Ⅱ.
C.Maybe there will be three kinds of restrooms in the future.
D.Ecobot Ⅱ can turn its flies into energy completely.
5. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Robots are hard things to invent.
B.Scientists are working to improve robots.
C.Robots in the future need to eat food like human.
D.Scientists at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory are good at robots.

【推荐3】Today there are more than 7 billion people on the earth. By the year 2050 there may be 12.5 billion. There are a lot of people to feed. We need more and more food.

One way to produce more food is growing stronger plants. For thousands of years, farmers have made plants better. Every season, they pick the best plants for the next season. It works very slowly. Since 1983, scientists have been able to change plants more quickly by changing their genetic (基因的) material. Foods from plants grown in this way are called genetically modified(转基因的) foods, or GM foods.

By changing the genetic material of a plant, it is possible to make new plants. They make plants which are strong against plant diseases. They can also help in our diseases. A kind of rice is being prepared, for example, which stops children becoming blind.

Rich countries produce GM foods because they are easy to grow and bring in more money. Poor countries are interested in them because they help produce more food.

GM plants are not natural. No one knows how good or bad they are. Making GM foods is only one way of feeding people in 2050. There are strong feelings against them, because they are unnatural. They may feed people, then hurt them or their children later. But both rich and poor countries are interested in their use, and they are not going to go away. In 2050, we may think differently about them.
