①Think back to when you were in a math class, and the teacher set a difficult problem. Which of the following is closer to you?
A:Oh no, this is too hard for me. I’m not even going to seriously try and work it out.
B:Ah, this is quite difficult but I like to push myself. Even if I don’t get the answer right, maybe I’ll learn something in a try.
②Carol Dweck, the researcher of Stanford University, gave a group of children problems that were a little hard for them. One group said they loved trying something new or something difficult and understood that their abilities could be developed. She says they had a “growth mindset(成长心态)”, which would make them better at study. But another group of children felt that they were unable to imagine improving. Some of these children might cheat in the future; others looked for someone who had done worse than them to make themselves feel better.
③Carol believes that there is a problem in education at the moment. For years, children have been praised for their talent. They become pleased by getting high grades, but they are not necessarily interested in learning itself. “The better way,” she says, “is to praise them for their hard work or their good learning habits or their improvements. This way they will achieve more.”
④Researchers have been testing these ideas. Students were taught that if they learned something new and difficult, their brains would form stronger connections, making them more clever. And they made faster progress in the end. In another study, a group of school children used growth mindset for a year. The results were really surprising. They came top in tests. These children had ever felt that working hard was a sign of stupidity(愚蠢), but they came to see it as the key to learning.
⑤So, back to our question at the beginning. If you answered B, well done—you already have a growth mindset. If A, don’t worry; everyone is able to improve if you really want to.

A.the problem in praising children | B.different ways of educating children |

A.something new | B.faster progress | C.another study | D.working hard |

②This is what Murphy’s Law tells us: If things can go wrong, they will go wrong. But is it true?
③Of the studies about Murphy’s Law, the most famous one is the buttered toast(奶油烤面包片) phenomenon: One toast with butter falls, it lands butter-side down most of the time.
④To prove(证明) this, Robert Matthews did a lot of experiments(实验) with more than 1,000 British school kids in 2001. In the first experiment, each student put a piece of buttered toast on a plate, let it fall off 20 times and noted which side it landed on. Of almost 10,000 experiments, toast landed butter-side down 62 percent of the time.
⑤But you may ask: Is it the butter that plays a role? Here comes Matthews’ second experiment. This time, instead of butter, the toast had a letter “B” written on one side. It still landed 58 percent of the time on the B-side. This proved that Murphy’s Law is true: If the toast can land butter-side down, it will do so.
⑥Matthews did another experiment. When students threw the toast from a height of 2.5 meters, the toast landed butter-side down only 47 percent of the time. “Toast lands butter-side down because humans aren’t tall enough to let it land any other way,” Matthews said.
⑦According to Murphy’s Law, there’s always something that you don’t expect to happen. So stop telling yourself you will fail and be active, because the opportunities(机会) are only for those who are prepared.

A study of 192 third and fourth-grade students, generally aged eight and nine, found that children who cut the number of hours spent watching television gained nearly two pounds(0.91 kg) less over a one year period than those who did not change their television diet.
“The findings are important because they show that weight loss can only be the result of a reduction in television viewing and not any other activity,” said Thomas Robinson, a pediatrician(儿科专家) at Stanford University.
“American children spend an average of more than four hours per day watching television and videos or playing games, and rates of childhood being very fat have doubled over the past 20 years,” Robinson said.
In the study, presented this week to the Pediatric Academic Societies’ annual meeting in San Francisco, the researchers persuaded about 100 of the students to reduce their television viewing by one-quarter to one-third.
Children watching fewer hours of television showed a significantly smaller increase in waist size and had less body fat than other students who continue their normal television viewing, even though neither group ate a special diet nor took part in any extra exercise.
“One explanation for the weight loss could be the children unstuck to the television may simply have been moving around and burning off calories, ” Robinson said.
“Another reason might be due to eating fewer meals in front of the television. Some studies have suggested that eating in front of the TV encourages people to eat more,” Robinson added.

The house-masters can take care of students all the time, especially after school hours.
Nearly all the students at boarding schools wear a school uniform. Boys usually wear a shirt and a tie, and girls wear a white blouse, sometimes also a tie and a skirt. As students get older, the rules become less strict.

Since then, tens of millions of people, mainly key groups such as medical workers, customs officers and delivery workers, have gotten the vaccine. How does the vaccine work? Are you allowed to get it? What do you need to know before getting it? Let’s take a look.
Q: How does the vaccine work?
A: The vaccines China is now using are called “inactivated vaccines” (灭活疫苗). There are “dead” viruses (病毒) in these vaccines. They cannot cause the disease, but can show your body what the virus looks like and make you immune (免疫) to it.
Studies show that China’s vaccines are 79.34 percent effective (有效的). This means that for every 100 people who get vaccinated, about 79 people will become immune to the virus. If 79 percent of the whole population becomes immune, the possibility of COVID-19 spreading will be very low.
Q: How is the vaccine given?
A: The vaccine is given by injection (注射). It’s suggested to get two doses. You should wait about two weeks after the first dose to get the second one.
Q: Can people of all ages get vaccinated?
A: The vaccines have been tested among three different age groups: 3 to 17, 18 to 59, and 60 and above. The 18-to-59 age group has the most data (数据)—the vaccines have been proven to be safe to this group. The other two groups are expected to be included soon.
Q: Is there anyone who shouldn’t get vaccinated?
A: Experts say the vaccines are safe for most people. But people who have serious diseases such as cancer (癌症) or diabetes (糖尿病), or people who are allergic (过敏的) to any of the vaccines ingredients (原料), should not get it. People who want to get the vaccine should not get any other vaccines during the same period.
Q: Do I still need to wear a mask in public places after I’ve been vaccinated?
A: Yes. It takes a few weeks for the body to build immunity after vaccination. This means it’s possible for a person to get infected (传染的) just after vaccination. There’s also a small chance that your body won’t build immunity. So before the population becomes immune to the virus, it’s highly encouraged to keep wearing masks, practicing social distancing (社交隔离) and washing your hands after getting vaccinated.
