Many children use the Internet to get knowledge and useful information, and relax in their free time. But some of them are not using it in a good way. Here are some rules to make sure you are safe and have fun on the Internet.
Firstly, you make rules for Internet use with your parents. For example, when you can go online, for how long and what activities you can go online.
Secondly, don’t give your password (密码) to anyone else, and never leak out (泄露) personal information such as your real name, home address, age, school, phone number and so on.
Third, never send a photo of yourself to someone in e-mail unless your parents say it’s OK. Check with your parents before going into a chat room. Different chat rooms have different rules and attract different kinds of people. You and your parents must make sure it’s a right place for you.
And you should never agree to meet someone you met on the Internet without your parents’ permission. Never meet anyone you met online alone. Then tell your parents or teachers about it.
Next, you should treat other people online as you’d like to be treated. Never use bad words.
Finally, please remember—not everything you read on the Internet is true.

When you think of starting a new project or going into a group situation with people you don’t know, do you feel butterflies in your stomach? If these happen, it shows that you are probably anxious, and your anxiety will stop you from going after your dreams. The following suggestions below will help you be the master of your anxiety, rather than letting it master you.
◆Don’t wait for your anxiety to go down
Your anxiety won’t go down on its own. However, when you take action towards your goals, you will build self-efficacy(自我效能)little by little—you begin to see yourself as someone who can take action and be successful.
◆Set a realistic goal that makes sense for you
We all have different personalities and preferences. We don’t all want to be lawyers, have hundreds of friends, or run marathons. Whatever you want, just figure out what is the simplest thing you can do to get started. Set your goal specifically, for example, “walk for 30 minutes three times next week.”
◆Trust the process(过程)
Faith(信仰)is the first step to take action. Even if you don’t have faith to begin with, faith will come if you just take that first step. The more you take action, the more likely you are to have some successes and begin to trust the process. Then your anxiety will go down slowly.
1. What will stop you from going after your dreams?2. What can help you build your self-efficacy?
3. What’s the example for you to set a realistic goal?
4. What’s the first step to take action?
5. How many suggestions are mentioned in this passage?

When you meet problems, whom will you ask for help? Here is the result of a survey (调查) among 3,000 middle school students. It says that students turn to different people for help in the face of difficulties.
The result shows that 36% of the students ask their parents for help. They think parents have more experience. But parents sometimes ask questions directly (直接地). This makes them uncomfortable (不舒服的). Some students turn to their classmates or friends for help. Because they have more common topics (话题) and can understand each other well. Some try to solve the problem by themselves. While some students think it’s free to talk to Dr. Know about the problems. They choose to write to the newspaper and ask for help. The others just do nothing.
Here are some tips on asking for help.
Share your problems. You should explain politely, quickly and clearly when you need help.
Watch and listen to your helper. You need to write down the advice on how to solve your problem.
Remember, the better you’re able to remember how to solve your problem, the less likely (可能的) you need to ask for help again.
Unhappiness won’t stay for a long time, so don’t think problems will catch you all the time. Instead, try to ask somebody to help with the problems and you will see the bright side.

According to a recent study, mobile phones have an influence on students’ sleep and memory. The study is from a survey of 2, 298 students aged 6 to 18. It shows that nearly every student uses a mobile phone for half an hour to two hours every day, two to five times a week. Boys spend more time on mobile phones than girls, but girls are more interested in using their mobile phones before they sleep than boys.
According to the study, the more students use mobile phones before they sleep, the longer it takes them to fall asleep. So they will not sleep well, which leads to a poor memory.
In 2021, the Ministry of Education (教育部) stopped all primary and middle school students in China from bringing mobile phones to schools. If they want to bring mobile phones to schools, they need to hand in mobile phones to their teachers during school time.
Liu Xin, a father of a primary school student in Wuhan, Hubei Province, says his daughter is only allowed to play with her mobile phone for a short time over the weekend. “During school days, she has a smart watch if she needs to reach us, and I don’t think it’s necessary for primary school students to use mobile phones,” he says.
It is very easy for young students to become dependent (依赖) on mobile phones, so it’s necessary for parents to take actions to stop student from using the mobile phone more often together with school.

Have you ever felt that you’ve been hit on the head after a bad night’s sleep? A study shows that if you don’t sleep for just one night, it may cause changes in the brain just like you are hit on the head.
Professor Benedict, from Sweden, said. “We found that their blood pressure (血压) rose if they didn’t sleep for a night.” He said the finding showed how the brain relaxes itself by sleeping. Professor Benedict, whose study was published in the Journal Sleep, added, “As a result, a good night’s sleep may be important for keeping our brain health.”
Compared with the people who lived 30 years ago, most people now sleep for only seven hours a night. So a third of the population in the UK suffers from sleep-related (相关的) problems. Many scientists believe irregular (不规律的) sleeping habits can cause heart disease, and less than eight hours sleep a night can lower the IQ the next day.
As a middle school student, I know there are many reasons for our loss of sleep, mostly connected with the pressure of success. For example, we have spent much time on our homework and other study tasks from teachers or parents. A long-term loss of sleep will make us tired and depressed (情绪低落的). Even worse, it will make some students develop a dangerous behavior of smoking.
Luckily, some effective actions have been taken to make sure that students have enough sleep. So I think families, schools and the government should take efforts to make students get more sleep.
1. How can we keep our brains healthy according to Professor Benedict?2. How long do most people sleep a night now?
3. What disease can irregular sleeping habits cause?
4. What dangerous behavior will some students develop if they are short of sleep?
5. How will we feel after a long-term loss of sleep?

Zhang Guimei, the headmaster of Huaping High School for Girls, has been given the title “Role Model of the Times” because of helping girls from poor families.
The school was the first high school in the country to provide free education (教育) for girls who were unable to continue their studies after completing their nine years of education.
Zhang moved to Lijiang at the age of 17 to teach in the middle school in Huaping County. Once, she got badly ill but had no money for the treatment. With the help of the people there, she was able to get the necessary treatment. “From then on, I told myself that I must do something for those people who helped me,” Zhang said.
Slowly, a dream of setting up a free high school for girls in Huaping County appeared in Zhang’s mind. From the year of 2002, she began a six-year journey to look for funds (资金). In 2008, Zhang finally set up Huaping High School for Girls at the foot of the Shizi Mountain. Thanks to her efforts (努力), more than 1,800 girls from poor families have entered universities through her education until now.

A new report from a university says 80% of the world’s teenagers don’t get enough exercise every day. The report was based on (基于) a research done with about 2 million students aged 11 to 17 around the world. According to the report, activity standards are different in different countries and they are also different between boys and girls. In China, for example, only 20% of the boys are active enough, compared to 11% of the girls.
Why don’t teens go out for exercise? One main reason is that they always have technology products in their hands or around them. They spend too much time on smart phones, computers and TVs in their free time. Many teens find it very hard to pull themselves away from these devices (设备). The report says that young people need to do less in the digital world but more in the real world. It advises kids to get at least an hour of exercise every day. This could include running, biking, playing sports, or many other outdoor activities.
More and more research shows that exercise not only helps the body, but also helps the brain. Besides, doing sports helps kids to make friends. Mark, a sports fan, started to play football when he was six years old. He used to be shy and weak, but now he has become taller and stronger. He gets to know the importance of communicating with his teammates and how to learn from mistakes and failure. And he has made lots of friends with the same interest. They often have football training on the playground. They have more to talk about and enjoy the happiness after training.

4. When did Mark start to play football?

Shanghai is the first city to carry out strict regulations (规章) on garbage sorting and recycling on July 1, 2019. Shanghai requires its people to divide garbage into four kinds, namely recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. If people fail to divide their garbage properly, they can be fined (罚款) up to 200 yuan.
Since the regulation worked, the amount of total daily waste in Shanghai has been reduced by an average of 15,500 tons, dropping 26 percent from the end of 2018, while the average (平均) daily weight of recyclables hits 4,500 tons, five times higher than the end of 2018. according to the Shanghai Landscaping and City Appearance Administrative Bureau.
The city also rebuilt 21,000 waste-sorting stations and more than 40,000 waste bins have been dated (更新). The city’s waste collection and transportation system is complete, according to the bureau.
“Proper waste sorting protects the environment and saves natural resources,” said Deng Jianping, director of the bureau. “Led by the central government, Shanghai is making efforts to develop long-term solutions to garbage management.”
However, there are also some problems. Some people complained that it is difficult to deal with wet garbage, because they are asked to remove wet garbage from its bag when dumping (倾倒).
According to the sorting rules, the wet garbage must go in the wet waste bin and the bag must go in the dry waste bin. This separation (分离) is necessary, as it makes sure that the wet garbage will decompose (分解) properly and become useful organic (有机的) waste, the bureau said.
1. When did Shanghai carry out strict regulations on garbage sorting and recycling?2. What punishment will people get if they fail to divide their garbage properly?
3. How many waste-sorting stations did Shanghai rebuild?
4. Why is it difficult for some people to deal with wet garbage?
