①Kids spend a lot of time on homework. Some people think that too much homework is necessary and helpful, because homework helps students practice what is taught in class. Is that really right?

②Statistics show that 33% of 14-year-old students report spending 2 hours or more on homework daily. Isn’t that too much? As a 9th grade student, I have thousands of assignments(布置) every week. As a result. I’m busy with homework every day. More often than not, I have to stay up until midnight, doing my homework. Certainly, this is harmful to my health as a developing teenager. Too much homework results in less sleep, more stress and having bad influence on my school performance because everyone knows that no good sleep leads to no good grades.

③So why do teenagers have so much homework? One of the answers is that teachers often have children cover materials at home by themselves that they do not discuss during school time at all. The teacher’s reason is that there aren’t enough hours in the day and he/she wants students to learn more. But being taught how to do something by a piece of paper just isn’t the same as being taught by an actual human being. The teacher can explain things in a different way if a student doesn’t understand how to do something, but homework can’t! When it comes to get knowledge, it is teachers rather than homework that counts.

④Statistics even show that kids who take part in an extra curricular(课外的) activity have less stress. The only problem is that kids have less time for such extra curricular activities. Homework takes away most of our free time to spend with friends and family.

⑤ Too much homework can cause stress depression(抑郁), lower grades, and less time to do extra curricular activities or hang out with friends, so teachers, could you please not get so excited about homework next time?

The Ministry of Education brought out new standards for labor education in schools last year. Starting from 2022 autumn term, students in primary and middle school have to take courses on labor skills at least once a week.

What should I eat for breakfast? Who should I go out with on weekends? What should I do if I miss the bus to school? What colleges should I apply for? Again and again Chinese kids ask these questions to their teachers and parents.     1

Kids in America would be very surprised to hear how much Chinese children depend on adults.     2     By twelve they know what classes to take for middle school. Thirteen years old is the beginning of being what Americans call a “teenager”. Now the child makes almost all his/ her decisions—what to do after school, who are his/her friends, sometimes even when to come home at night. Finally at sixteen the kid usually gets a car from his/her parents. Now he or she can come and go when he/she likes. The only rule is when they come home at night.

Why should kids be independent? Think about it.     3     Will our parents be able to tell us what to eat for breakfast in college? Can our teachers decide what we should do at work?

4     But we can start with making small choices, and then slowly make bigger and more important choices. Before we know it we will become independent, confident and able to make our own decisions!     5

A.When they are ten years old, kids decide what clothes they want to wear and buy.
B.And we will have more fun!
C.They can’t make their own choices.
D.After high school most of us will be by ourselves.
E.Making our own choices can be quite hard and scary.
