Long time ago, there was a boy called Narcissus. He was very handsome and many women loved him. One of them was a fairy called Echo (回声). Unluckily, Echo could only repeat after others, so she couldn’t tell Narcissus her love for him.
One day, Narcissus got lost in the woods. He shouted, “Who’s there?” Echo repeated, “Who’s there?” Slowly, Echo stepped forward. But Narcissus didn’t love Echo, and left her heartbroken.
Later, a goddess learnt this. She decided to punish (惩罚) Narcissus. She made the boy fall in love with himself. Once Narcissus took a drink from a pond. He saw his own reflection (倒影) and fell in love with himself. From then on, he stayed there and looked into the water until he died. A flower grew where he died. That flower is called narcissus (水仙花).
This story tells us why the narcissus flower is seen as too much self-love. It also shows that too much self-love is unhealthy. What about healthy self-love? To have healthy self-love, we need to use the mirror. That is to say, we need to love ourselves. Also, we need to find the goodness in others and love them. In this way, we will hear praise from each other. When we have learnt to appreciate the value that we add to each other’s lives, we can love ourselves healthily.
1. What does Narcissus mean in this passage?2. Could Echo tell Narcissus her love for him?
3. How did Echo feel when Narcissus didn’t love her?
4. How did the goddess punish Narcissus?
5. What does the story tell us?

One Friday, 12-year-old Janet and her friend Amy had to walk past Mr. Dawson's house. When Janet saw him, she suggested crossing the street to the other side. But Amy said they needn't.
When Mr. Dawson saw Amy, he smiled and said, “Hello, Amy! I see you have a new friend with you today.” Amy smiled back and told him that Janet would stay with her that night. Mr. Dawson looked friendly and gave them each a fresh apple. The girls were glad to get them.
Later Janet asked Amy, “Everyone says he is the most unwelcome person in town. Why was he so kind to us?” Amy explained that when she first walked past his house, she was also afraid of him. But she pretended there was an invisible (看不见的) smile on his face and then started talking to him. Just a “hello” at first, and then more.
“An invisible smile?” Janet was puzzled, “Yes,” answered Amy, “My grandma told me to think so. She says smiles can run around. If we keep smiling at someone, sooner or later he will really smile back.”

You want to help others. You are a kind soul (灵魂) at heart. You don’t want to turn the person away and you want to help when possible, even if it may take up your time.

Wanting to be agreeable. At times, you find you are not in agreement. You don’t want to keep yourself away from the group, so you agree to do others’ requests (请求).
Fear of conflict (冲突). The person might be angry if you refuse him. This might lead to an ugly conflict. Even if there isn’t, there might be disagreement which might lead to bad effects (影响) in the future.
Fear of losing opportunities (机会). Sometimes, saying “no” means closing doors or losing opportunities. It may make you feel worried. 【推荐1】Is there someone you hate? Well, you don’t really hate them. But you get really angry every time you think of them. If you don’t let this anger go, it can turn into bitterness(痛苦).
Bitterness appears when we can’t forgive someone who has hurt us or made us angry. Someone might say or do something that hurts us. But instead of controlling the anger, we keep it deep inside. Before long, a bitter feeling begins to grow. We may think we’re hurting that person by criticizing(批评) him or her often, but we’re really only hurting ourselves.
Bitterness can not only lead to terrible health problems such as heart disease, but also hurt our friendships with our friends and family members. No one enjoys being around an angry person for very long.
If you see bitterness in your life, the following ways can be helpful.
Accept it
Instead of trying to deny your anger, make it clear to yourself and accept it. See your anger for what it is and quickly deal with it.
Stop making excuses for it
You may feel you have a right to be angry. You may think you’re right and the other person is wrong. You may even secretly enjoy making the other person look bad. But in the end, bitterness hurts you much more than the other person. The bitterness will hold you back, and the other person will go on with his or her life.
Forgive and forget it
You probably can’t completely put the anger out of your mind. But you can decide to forgive the other person. Forget it and move on. You’ll enjoy better health and peace of your mind.

As Christmas came closer, her dream for a bike seemed to disappear, for she didn’t mention it again. We were busy buying some beautiful storybooks, a doll house, a holiday dress and toys.
Then much to our surprise, on the evening of December 24, she said she terribly wanted a bike more than anything else.
Then we didn’t know what to do. It was just too late for us to make her dream come true. So there was no time to buy the “right bike” for our little girl. Thinking that we were parents who would make their child unhappy, we tried to deal with the problem.
Suddenly my husband came up with an idea. “What if I make a little bike out of clay and write a note that she could trade in the model bike for a real one?” “Perfect!” I shouted. So he spent the next five hours carefully working with clay to make a small bike.
On Christmas morning, we were so excited to wait for our daughter to open the little box with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. She opened it and read the note loudly. She looked at me and her father, and said, “So, does it mean I can trade in this bike for a real one?” Smiling, I said, “Yes.” Rose had tears in her eyes when she replied, “What a wonderful surprise I have! I will never trade in this beautiful bike that Daddy made me. I prefer to keep it rather than get a real bike.” At that moment, we would have bought her every bike on the earth.

Face-to-face with a mother who doesn’t immediately praise every gift, my children have learned to be very careful in choosing gifts. But a couple of weeks ago, they came together to give me a gift that really blew me away.
For years now, I’ve been wanting to sell our house where my children grew up. But there are the funny little love hearts they drew just near their beds. The attic (阁楼) is full of the old clothes they couldn’t wear. The high shelves still have lots of novels for children, like The Night Before Christmas and The Muddle-Headed Wombat.
But those are not the reasons for being sad about leaving this house. There is much more to tie me to the home where I brought up our kids. In the front room, there is a wall. On that wall are hundreds of pencil marks, names and dates. They recorded the way the children grew.
Of all the objects, all the memories, it’s this one place in our home that makes it hard for me to leave. Over dinner, over the years, I’ve talked about how much I would hate leaving that wall, even though the last marks were made ten years ago when my kids stopped growing. So one day, while I was at work, my children decided to do something about the wall. Here was a chance to remove the last traces (痕迹) of their babyhood, but they didn’t do that. Instead, they hired Jack, a professional photographer, to come to our house to take photos of the pencil marks, names and dates and then changed them into one photo.
At last the gift made its way to me, one meaningful photo. Representing love and growth, it’s a gift that I will cherish forever.

“On the first day of 2024, I saw the snows of Kilimanjaro (乞力马扎罗山),” said Xu Zhuoyuan, a 17-year-old mountain climber from Hunan.
Xu’s mountain climbing journey began on a family trip to Xizang and Sichuan four years ago. Passing by Mount Siguniang in Sichuan, she enjoyed its beauty and decided to try climbing it. She fell in love with mountain climbing right then and there.

Above 4,000 meters on Mount Kilimanjaro, the weather is similar to a desert, with big temperature differences. The whole climb took seven days, and staying warm and avoiding heat loss (损失) were the main challenges. Xu had to keep an eye on the temperature and change her clothes when the temperature changed.
During this experience, Xu was climbing with Xia Boyu, the first Chinese climber who reached the top of Mount Qomolangma with a prosthetic (假肢的) leg. “Every time I felt like giving up, just seeing Xia was enough to inspire me. He still kept going although he was having bloodied (流血的) legs from his prosthesis,” Xu said.

The museum sent Mr. Chan, a member of the museum staff, to collect the teapot. On the plane back to Hong Kong, he noticed two men. They were watching him closely. “Perhaps they’re going to steal the teapot again. I must think of a plan,” he thought.
Mr. Chan’s daughter, Amy, met him at Hong Kong afterwards. Mr. Chan was carrying two boxes. He gave his daughter the pink box and said to her in a low voice, “Take this gift box home with great care.” He walked away with the brown one. The two men followed him.
Amy opened the box at home. She was expecting a pair of sports shoes, but she just found an old teapot. “This is not a very interesting gift,” said Amy, a bit disappointed. “That’s all right.
