To get an idea of how happy people are, the researchers told people to imagine life as a ladder (阶梯). The worst possible life would be on step 0. The best possible life would be on step 10. Then the researchers asked people where they were on the ladder. They asked this question of 10,000 people in 156 different countries over the last three years.
For the third year in a row, the report named Finland as the world's happiest country. This time Finland was even farther ahead of other countries than it was last time. The other top five countries were Denmark, Switzerland, Iceland and Norway.
To help explain the results, the researchers studied several important areas, such as how much money people make, how long they live, how free they are, how much support they get from the people around them, and whether the government is seen as honest.
Clearly, the kind of happiness that is being measured by the report isn't just about laughing, smiling, and telling jokes. It's more about how satisfied people are with their lives.
The report suggests that when people live in a place where they trust other people and the government, they are more likely to be happy. The report's authors describe these as "high-trust" countries.
As countries around the world face the big challenges brought by the coronavirus, the report's authors note that happiness doesn't always disappear during difficult times.

My name is Peter. I come from a small village, close to New York. I’ve been crazy about Chinese history and culture. So I learned Putonghua in the university and I am good at speaking it.
Three years ago, I came to China. I am an English teacher in a middle school in Suzhou, a city in East China. Now I get used to the life here except one thing—the language(方言).
When I talk with older people, they prefer to speak Suzhou dialect. It is famous for its soft words, and is known as the soft dialect(语调) which sounds very musical and pleasing. But it is quite different from Putonghua. Putonghua has only four tones while there are no less than seven in Suzhou dialect. Besides, the differences between Suzhou dialect and Putonghua go far beyond (超过) tones and pronunciations. There is rich information about the history and culture of Suzhou in its dialect. Apart from that, some pieces of slang (俗语) and expressions just don’t sound the same in Putonghua.
I made a lot of mistakes when communicating with Suzhou people here. However hard it is, I am already on the way to becoming a native (母语的) speaker, speaking like a local of Suzhou.
1. Which country does Peter come from?2. What makes it difficult for Peter to understand Suzhou dialect?
3. Do you think it’s important for foreigners to learn the local dialect? Why or why not?

Later, one of my sons went to Canada’s east coast near a city called Halifax and the other moved to the west coast to Vancouver. My wife and I were left in the middle. As we nearly retired (退休), we started to think where we should spend our final years. For several reasons we moved to a small town on Vancouver Island, which was close to one of my sons. However, the son moved to Hollywood soon after he had got another job there. I helped him move.
We still lived a happy life in our little west coast town, but we have paid a price. We have not been there for some important events such as the births of our grandchildren. We have missed watching them grow up and we have missed, backyard barbecues and basketball weekends with them. Although our home was very comfortable, it was also very quiet.
Every fall we travel to see the children. We usually fly, first to California to see our son Scott and spend a week or more with him trying to catch up on everything we’ve missed. Then, usually in November, we make the even longer trip east across Canada to see Travis and our grandchildren, who were about in their twenties.
Fortunately, both our sons are doing well and grandchildren are growing up tall. We love all of them and they love us. We’re very happy but it is also a pity that we didn’t see many things: the tears or the smile on the grandchildren’s faces, their school graduations and my son’s joy at successes in business.
