Robert Frost was one of America’s best-known writers. But his fame came late in his life. When people began to read his poems, he was forty years old.
Robert was born in San Franciso, California. His childhood was unhappy. His father often drank too much and became angry. His father treated him unkindly and always put him in the dark room. As a child, Robert was scared of darkness. When he was eleven, his father died.
After high school, Robert’s grandfather offered to pay his cost at Dartmouth College. But Robert left there after a few months. He did not like it. He spent the next few years working at different jobs. Sometimes he worked as a teacher, sometimes a reporter. But always, he wrote poems. In 1912, he decided to make a new start. He took his family to Britain. In Britain, his first book of poems, A Boy’s Will, was published in 1913. Robert received high praise from British readers. But Robert’s best book of poems was North of Boston. In Britain, readers liked his writing style—taking simple natural things and building a world of new meanings. His works were easily understood.
But his life was sad. His son killed himself. His wife was often sick. Robert Frost, too, suffered from his own imaginary sicknesses (幻想症). He lived a different life through his poems. He talked about simple, natural things: trees, the weather, seasons, night and day.

However, with his mom’s guidance, he realized this would not be a good idea. That is because when he looked around, many of the kids did not have shoes or had shoes that were worn out(破烂的).
Nicholas then learned that some of the kids shared their shoes with the member of their family and missed school because another family member was wearing the shoes that day. He noticed that some children had wounds (伤口) on their feet because of wearing shoes that were not the right size. Nicholas then started giving away his used shoes and clothes to the homeless.
A few years later, when it came to perform a service project for his company. Nicholas knew exactly what he wanted to do. It was when his charity (慈善), Gotta Have Sole Foundation, was born.

I was thinking about mowing the lawn myself one Sunday when the "Mr. Whippy" ice cream van stopped outside on the street. I hadn’t had a Mr. Whippy ice cream for years, So I went outside immediately. Three young boys aged around 10 years were playing on the road. It was hot and I bought each an ice cream. They were very happy. When I left the van, I heard the lady serving the boys say, "That was a really kind thing that lady did for you, boys. Don’t forget to thank her.” I smiled as I went inside to continue working.
I left for work that evening, and didn’t return until Tuesday morning. As I drove into the driveway, I realized something was different. Yes, my lawns had been mowed and my gardens had been weeded. I felt big warmth rush into my heart and a smile across my face. Immediately, I knew my neighbours had done this for me, and went to thank them right away.
They wouldn’t know that this act of kindness not only made a big difference to me, but encouraged me to act further and set up a website focusing on kindness in our community. Thank you so much, neighbours.

② Boya was good at playing guqin. The music he played was exquisite and pleasant to listen to. Although many people praised his music, he believed that he had never come across anyone who could really understand his music. One day, he was playing music on his way home on the boat. “Mark Twain”,the pen name of Samuel Clemens(1835-1911) is loved by American readers for his novelsTom Sawyer(1876) andThe Adventures of Huckberry Finn(1844).
Now he is going to have his life and work commemorated(纪念) with special gold and silver coins.
But does Twain need to be commemorated? It doesn’t seem like people in the US will forget him. Twain once joked that a lack(缺少)of money is the root of all evil(邪恶)” but a lack of money with Twain’s famous face on it wouldn’t have made people forget about him.
The Adventures of Huckberry Finnis thought to be his greatest works.
Motherless Huck Finn is a young boy who shows the spirit of freedom. But it could be said that Huck’s freedom really comes from Huck wanting to fly. When Huck gets away from his violent(暴力的) father,he isn’t really looking for freedom, but survival.
It’s even more of a problem for a slave. Jim,the escaped(逃跑的) slave who Huck helps, makes Huck’s life seem even better. It’s easier not to be able to deal with someone who wants to force you to go to school than to have to fight a law that says you are a piece of property(财产).
Huck and Jim’s friendship,as shown by Mark Twain,is one of the great stories in American literature because it shows a white character,Huck, who gets an idea of the African American experience.
Mark Twain is famous and would still be famous without any special coins. Anyway, the coins could be a reason to look again at the work of a writer who got under the skin of the US in the 19th century.
With the race issue(种族问题)far from deadin the US today, perhaps Twain still has something to teach today’s readers.

C.Being in danger. | D.Gone for a long time. |
A.To tell the story of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. |

The university encouraged us to attend classes as part of our professional development. They offered two foreign language choices: Chinese and Japanese. For I liked Chinese food a little more, I decided to take the course. Two terms in, and I was hooked! I co-founded the Chinese Culture Club at school. We attended the Spring Festival celebration hosted by our local Chinese community center. I learned to make baozi and tried out my fledgling language skills at the local Chinese restaurant.
The club decided on a foster (寄养) home that supported orphans (孤儿). It helped me make a decision to visit China. After all, if I’m going to learn a language, I might as well go to the country itself! So I made arrangements with the foster home to volunteer in exchange for lodgings. My stay would be three weeks.
A year of language learning did not prepare me for the culture. Firstly, dirt roads, stray dogs, limited indoor heating and the language problem made me very worried. Luckily, the people there helped me work through the change from America to China.
Once the initial shock wore off, I was completely charmed. The food was amazing, the people were friendly and curious, and the children were cute. My Chinese was pushed to its limit. I used my weekends to take in everything from the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Great Wall. I also took a trip to the Shaolin Temple in Henan province.
And, just as I was getting comfortable, it was time to go home. I knew before I left that I would return, not just for a visit, but to live.
Ten long years later, a chance came itself. I left everything except my 16-year-old cat, Darcy, and we are now happily two years into our new lives in Beijing.
It took me a decade to move to China. And it was worth the wait.

Dean’s world turned upside down when his brother died from an accident. He still went to class. His head teacher Mr. Chen was talking about the famous writer Shakespeare, whom Dean’s brother liked best. Hearing Shakespeare, Dean thought of his own brother. His eyes started to water. He didn’t want anyone to see him cry. He got up from his seat. “Dean, you can’t get up while I am talking.” Mr. Chen said.
Everyone stared at Dean. Everyone could see the tears in his eyes. They laughed at him. Dean ran out of the classroom. Mr. Chen followed him and sat down with him.
“Dean, it’s okay to cry if something tragic (悲痛的) happened. Go ahead and cry,” Mr. Chen comforted (安慰) him. Dean put his head on the teacher’s shoulder and cried out loudly. My family moved out of Wales when I was thirteen. I went to a new school. One of my subjects was French. Because I had never learned any French, my teacher told me to sit in the corner and write anything I was interested in. That’s the time I started writing, just for myself, and I’ve been writing ever since.
I have always loved BIG IDEAS, and so I enjoy writing fantastic stories. And I also write horror(恐怖的)stories. I think they are like the old fairytales(童话故事), and can teach you important things.
I am in my forties on the outside, twelve on the inside. I like rock music, Indian and Chinese food, and I enjoy drinking.
