The United Nations put out the most complete report on the problem of food waste. It found that the world wastes about 17% of all the food. That’s about a billion (十亿) tons of food a year. A billion tons is a lot of food—it’s about 931 billion kilograms. The report said that the food wasted is about twice as much as earlier studies had suggested. The study looked at several different ways in which food is wasted—at home, in restaurants and in stores.

It turns out that most food waste—about 61%—happens at home. The food thrown at home works out to about 74 kilograms for each person every year. Restaurants caused about 26% of the food wasted. The other 13% was thrown away by stores.

Food wasted was at about the same rate (比率) in all but the poorest countries. Many people thought rich countries were more likely to waste food than countries that were less rich. That turned out not to be true. In fact, some richer countries wasted far less food than common countries. But people in richer countries may waste less food at home because they are eating out at restaurants more often. That certainly seems to be the case in the US, which has low waste numbers for homes, but quite high numbers for restaurants.

The report points out that hundreds of millions of people are hungry every year. And wasting food is also really bad for the earth. Farming creates between 10% and 30% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions (温室气体排放), which make the environment worse.

The report says that it’s important for countries to study food waste more carefully in order to make out ways to sew up the problem. Some possible uses for food waste include making food for animals and burning food wastes to create energy. The important thing is to keep food from simply going into rubbish bins.

根据上文内容判断正 (T) 误 (F)
1. The report shows ‘‘People in rich countries pay most attention to the taste of food.”
2. According to the report, people in rich countries don’t actually waste more food than others.
3. The underlined expression “sew up” in the last paragraph means “avoid”.
4. Paragraph 4 mainly shows the problem of hunger is difficult to solve.
5. The report suggests that countries should study how to reuse food waste carefully.

文章大意:本文介绍了太阳系的一些知识,主要介绍了围绕木星和土星的卫星的发现和研究。

【推荐2】In our solar system (太阳系), some planets have a great number of moons (卫星) while some have none. Recently scientists have discovered 12 more moons going around Jupiter (木星). That means Jupiter now has a total of 92 moons, more than any other planet in our solar system.

Scott Sheppard was a member of the team that made the latest discoveries. The new moons were found using telescopes (望远镜) in Hawaii and Chile. Sheppard said, “I hope we can take clear photos of one of these moons in the near future to better understand it.”

Jupiter’s newly discovered moons are between one and three kilometers in size. They have not yet been named, as half of them are too small—less than 1.5 kilometers—to own a name.

Sheppard has already taken part in 70 moon discoveries for Jupiter. He also discovered moons going around Saturn (土星). It had been the planet with the most moons until the most recent announcement. It now is known to have 83 moons. Saturn held the top position since 2019 when Sheppard’s team discovered 20 more moons. Before that, Jupiter was the solar system’s leader with 79 moons.

Sheppard expects to keep adding moons to both Jupiter and Saturn in the future. Uranus and Neptune also have many small moons. But they are much farther from Earth, so discovering new moons around those planets is more difficult.

This year, the European Space Agency has sent a spaceship to explore Jupiter. The spaceship, called JUICE, took off in April. The task is to make further research on Jupiter and its three large moons.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章论述了眼泪的价值。

【推荐3】Tears can ruin make-up, bring a conversation to a stop, and give you a runny nose. They can leave you ashamed and without energy. However, crying is a fact of life, and tears are very useful. Even when you’re not crying, your eyes produce tears. These create a film over the eye’s surface. This film has something that protects your eyes.

Tears comfort stress, but we get used to fighting them for all sorts of reasons. “People worry about showing their emotions. They’re afraid that once they lose control, they’ll never get it back,” explains Doctor Dorothy Rowe. “As children, we were sometimes punished for dropping tears or expressing anger. As adults, we still fear the results of showing emotions.”

Almost any emotion — good or bad, happy or sad can cause tears. Crying is a way that we release built-up emotions. Tears can help you when you feel you are ready to blow up because of very strong feelings. It may explain why people who are afraid to cry often suffer more heart attacks than people who cry more freely.

When some people become very stressed, however, they can’t cry. They may be feeling anger, fear or sadness, but they conceal the emotion — not willing anyone to know how they really feel. “Everyone has the need to cry,” says Doctor Vera Diamond. Sometimes in hospitals, patients join in crying exercises. They practice crying so that they can get used to expressing emotion. Diamond says it’s best to cry in safe and private places because many people get uncomfortable when others cry in front of them. In fact, they may be repressing their own need to cry as well.

In certain situations, such as at work, tears are not proper. It’s good to control tears during a business discussion. “But once you are safely behind closed doors, don’t just cry,” Diamond says. She suggests that you act out the whole situation again and be as noisy and angry as you like. It will help you feel comfortable. She adds, “Once your tears have eased the stress, you can begin to think of reasonable ways to deal with the problem.”

Tears are a sign of our ability to feel. You should never be afraid to cry.

1. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.How tears can do people good.B.Why people are afraid to cry.
C.How emotions may influence people.D.What different groups of people think of tears.
2. The word “conceal” in Paragraph 4 probably means “_________”.
A.expressB.changeC.showD.hide
3. Why does the writer mention Diamond’s suggestion in Paragraph 5?
A.To advise what to do after crying.B.To stress disadvantages of crying.
C.To prove why it’s good not to cry.D.To introduce ways to control tears.
4. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Don’t Believe in TearsB.Cry as You Want
C.Laughing Is Better Than CryingD.The Value of Tears
