To many people, the word “Hollywood” has two meanings. Hollywood is a place in Los Angeles, California, the USA. Hollywood is also the home of American movies.

Hollywood was just farmland in 1870. Early American movies were made in other places, like New York and Chicago.

In 1907, a director(导演) made a movie in Chicago. The weather was so terrible that he couldn’t finish the movie. He had to find a warmer place. He decided to take a trip to the south of California and found it was sunny all year round there. The director thought the south of California was the best place for making movies. The next thirty years were Hollywood’s greatest years because quite a lot of movies were made there, most by a few large studios. Directors, actors, and writers worked for these studios.

Hollywood, the place in Los Angeles, also reached its high point in these years. Many famous and fantastic movie stars, like Bette Davis and Clark Gable, lived in Hollywood.

Everyone knows that a good sleep is important for our health. But not everyone knows how important it is to sleep in the dark. A new report says sleeping with the light on could be bad for our health.

Researchers say turning off the light when we sleep helps us to keep away from diabetes (糖尿病) and heart disease. Sleeping with the light on could increase the risk of getting these diseases. The researchers said around 40 percent of people sleep with some kind of artificial (人造的) light. They said even light from a television or an alarm clock could be bad for our health. They added that the worst thing to sleep with is light. Sleeping in the dark is more difficult for people who live in cities, where there is a lot of outdoor light at night.

The researchers are from the North western University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, the USA. The lead researcher, Dr Phyllis Zee, is an expert in sleep medicine. She said it is healthier for us to turn off all lights when we sleep. Her team had a study of the blood sugar levels of 20 people after nights of sleep. ① ________ Dr Zee said this is because light stimulates brain activity, which raises blood sugar levels.

Dr Zee said there are some things we can do to solve the problem: turn off the lights, never sleep with white or blue light, use a blackout curtain or wear an eye mask.

Excellent English food at the Country House.

Last Saturday night, my family and I ate at the Country House.

The Country House serves traditional English food, we paid about 15 to 20 pounds a person to eat there.

The food was wonderful. The fish pie reminded me of my grandma. She used to cook it for me. I also had some fish and chips, and it was fantastic.

The waiters were polite, but a little slow. We were seated at 7 p.m., but we did not receive our food until 7:40 p.m.

I would certainly recommend the Country House for good, traditional English food.   However, you should get there early and be prepared to spend a lot of time waiting for your food.
