文章大意:本文介绍了一种Be another lab的体验,可以让人们互换角色,这样可以一定程度上消除人们的偏见,也可以促进人与人的相互理解。

【推荐1】If you could be anybody in the world, who would it be? Your neighbor or a super star? A few people have experienced what it might be like to step into the skin of another person, thanks to an unusual virtual reality(虚拟现实) equipment. Rikke Wahl, an actress, model and artist, was one of the participants(参与者) in a body swapping experiment at the Be Another lab, a project developed by a group of artists based in Barcelona. She swapped with her partner—an actor, using a machine called The Machine to Be Another and temporarily became a man. “As I looked down, I saw my whole body as a man, dressed in my partner’s pants,” she said. “That’s the picture I remember best.”

The equipment is quite simple. Both users wear a virtual reality headset with a camera on the top. The video from each camera is sent to the other person, so what you see is the exact view of your partner. If she moves her arm, you see it. If you move your arm, she sees it.

To get used to seeing another person’s body without actually having control of it, participants start by raising their arms and legs very slowly, so that the other can follow along. Finally, this kind of slow synchronized(同步的) movement becomes comfortable, and participants really start to feel as though they are living in another person’s body.

By using such technology it is likely to change people’s behaviour afterwards—possibly for the better. Studies have shown that virtual reality can be effective in fighting racism(种族主义)—the bias( 偏 见 ) that humans have against those who don’t look or sound like them.

Researchers at the University of Barcelona gave the participants a questionnaire test called the Implicit Association Test, which measures the strength of people’s associations(关联) between black people and adjectives such as good or bad, athletic or awkward(笨拙的). Then they asked the participants to control the body of a dark skinned digital character using virtual reality glasses. After that, the participants took the questionnaire test once again. This time, the participants’ bias scores were lower. So the idea is that once you’ve “put yourself in another’s shoes”, you’re less likely to think ill of them, because your brain has experienced the feeling of being that person.

The creators of “The Machine to Be Another” hope to achieve a similar result. “At the end of body swapping, people feel like holding each other in their arms,” says Arthur Pointeau, a programmer with the project. “It’s a really nice way to have this kind of experience. I would really recommend it to everyone.”

D.The Machine to Be Another can help people change their sexes(性别)

A.they fought more strongly against racism

【推荐2】Many people say dolphins are very itelligent. They seem to be able to think, understand, and learn things quickly. But are they smart like humans or are they more like cats or dogs? Dolphins use their brains differently from people. But scientists say dolphin intelligence and human intelligence are similar in some ways. How?

Like humans, every dolphin has its own name. The name is a special whistle. Each dolphin chooses a specific whistle for itself, usually by its first birthday. Actually, scientists think dolphins, like people, “talk” to each other about a lot of things, such as their age, their feelings, or finding food. And, like humans, dolphins use a system of sounds and body language to communicate. But understanding their conversations is not easy for humans. No one speaks “dolphin” yet, but some scientists are trying to learn.

Dolphins are also social animals. They live in groups, and they often join others from different groups to play games and have fun—just like people. In fact, playing together is something only intelligent animals do.

Dolphins and humans are similar in another way: both species make plans to get something they want. In the seas of southern Brazil, for example, dolphins use an interesting strategy to get food. When fish are near a boat, dolphins show signs to the fishermen to put their nets in the water. Using this method, the men can catch a lot of fish. What is the advantage for the dolphins in doing so? They get to eat some of the fish that escape from the net.

文章大意:本文介绍了时间规律的变化以及由此给人们的生活起居、工作学习所造成的影响。

【推荐3】Sunday is more like Monday than it used to be. Places of business that used to keep daytime “business hours” are now open late into the night. And on the Internet, the hour of the day and the day of the week have become irrelevant. A half century ago in the United States, most people experienced strong and precise dividing lines between days of rest and days of work, school time and summer time. Today the dividing lines are still there, but they seem not clear.

The law in almost all states used to require stores to close on Sunday; in most, it no longer does. It used to keep the schools open in all seasons except summer, in most, it still does. And whether the work week should strengthen its legal(法律的) limits, or whether it should become more changeable, is often debated(争论). How should we, as a society, organize our time? Should we go even further in relaxing the dividing lines of time until we live in a world in which every minute is much like every other?

These are not easy questions even to ask. Part of the difficulty is that we seldom recognize the “law of time” even when we meet it face to face. We know as children that we have to go to school a certain number of hours, a certain number of days, a certain number of years—but unless we meet the truant officer(学监), we may well think that we should go to school because of social custom and parents’ requirement rather than to the law. As adults we know “extra pay for overtime working” very well, but less familiar with the fact that what constitutes(构成) “overtime” is a matter of legal thing. When we turn the clock forward to start daylight-saving time, have we ever thought to ourselves: “Here is the law in action”? As we shall see, there is a lot of law that has great influence on how organize and use time: compulsory education law, overtime law, and daylight-saving law—as well as law about Sunday closing, holidays, being late to work, time zones, and so on. Once we begin to look for it, we will have no trouble finding a law of time to examine and assess.

1. What does the underlined word “irrelevant” probably mean?
A.Impossible.B.Unacceptable.C.Unimportant.D.Disagreeable.
2. The writer raises the questions in Paragraph 2 to introduce the fact that people _____.
A.are unknowing of the law of time
B.fail to make full use of their time
C.welcome changeable working hours
D.enjoy working overtime for more pay
3. We can learn from the passage that most children go to school because they_____.
A.have to follow the law
B.need to find social customs
C.need to learn more knowledge
D.have to follow their parents’ requirement
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Our life is governed by the law of time.
B.How to use time is not worth debating.
C.New ways of using time change our society.
D.Our time table is decided by social customs.
