Social media(社交媒体) has its positive aspects, but it can also bring some problems.

Have you ever been bored and decided to check your We Chat moments, only to find out that your best friend is at the Great Wall or one of your classmates is eating delicious noodles at your favorite restaurant, or one of your basketball teammates is visiting the giant pandas in Sichuan? Have you had the feeling that others are enjoying life more than you are? If your answers are both “Yes”, you are experiencing FOMO—the fear of missing out.

Researchers have found that over 75%of young people are experiencing FOMO from time to time. Social media is the main culprit for it. Because it is so easy today for people to see what their friends are doing, eating, buying and talking about. And they are afraid of missing out on important and new information when they are away from social networks. However, it is impossible for us to enjoy the same activities others are enjoying on social media. Failing to realize this truth, we often let FOMO lead us to compare our lives with those of others. This comparison leaves us feeling dissatisfied. However, our lives have both good and bad moments, but all we see on social media are the picture-perfect moments others share. FOMO also makes us check social media more often, which can cause feelings of sadness, loneliness and boredom.

So what should we do if we have FOMO? Researchers advised that we face it and change our way of thinking. They also explained that taking part in social activities could help us realize that nothing bad was happening. What’s more, they suggested finding the joy in the present and not believing the unreal information or news on the Internet. “Take it as a chance to do what you really love, and turn your FOMO into your JOMO—joy of missing out,” one researcher said.

1. What is the main purpose of Paragraph 2?
A.To show what FOMO is with examples.
B.To find out if people suffer from FOMO.
C.To ask questions about people’s daily lives.
D.To give examples about people’s using social media.
2. Which one can replace the word “culprit” in Paragraph 3?
A.purposeB.causeC.resultD.problem
3. According to paragraph 3, why does social media make people feel dissatisfied?
A.Because our lives have both good and bad moments.
B.Because it leads us to compare our lives with those of others.
C.Because it is impossible for us to make friends by social media.
D.Because we can see the picture-prefect moments.
4. According to the last paragraph, what are the right ways to deal with FOMO?
①Join a voluntary group.
②Accept what you are having now.
③Check your friends’ We Chat moments from time to time.
④Develop your hobbies.
⑤Stop believing the news on the Internet.
A.③④⑤B.②③⑤C.①④⑤D.①②④
5. What can be the best title of this passage?
A.Social media: Good or bad?B.FOMO: Friend or enemy?
C.FOMO: Get out of it!D.Social media: Guard against it!

【推荐1】Silk was discovered by the Chinese more than 3,000 years ago. It was said that the wife of the Yellow Emperor accidentally dropped a silkworm cocoon(蚕茧) into her tea. The hot water caused the cocoon to break.     1     From then on, the silk industry began. At first, only the rich were allowed to wear silk clothes.

As early as 300 AD, Chinese businessmen sold silk to the Indians. By 200 BC, the Koreans had learned how to make silk. A 12,000-kilometer road going from China to Europe was built because of silk.     2

Here's a simple version of how this amazing little thing does its work. The silkworm begins life as a moth(蛾子). The moth's life is about ten days, during which it lays eggs that change into silkworms.     3     In their short lives, 20,000 silkworms will eat more than one ton of mulberry(桑树) leaves, their main food.

4     The finished cocoon contains 350 meters of silk. That might seem like a lot, but consider this: 5,500 silkworms have to spin 5,500 cocoons to make one kilogram of silk. People raise silkworms for silk production. The Chinese have perfected the art of making silk, gaining knowledge over many centuries.

Today, silk production remains an important economic risk in China.     5     Silk no longer costs an arm and a leg, but it is still highly prized.

A.Silkworms eat a lot.
B.As it broke apart, she realized its beauty.
C.Actually, it is a painful process for the worm.
D.In its final stage of life, the silkworm spins a cocoon.
E.From there, knowledge of silk production spread across the world.
F.While versions have recently entered the market, the beauty of naturally produced silk is not matched.

【推荐2】Breakfast is food for the brain. And it’s good even for people worrying about their weight. Middle school students who eat breakfast are more likely to have healthy weight than those who don’t eat breakfast. This is true even for students who eat two breakfasts — one at home and one at school. “Not skipping(跳过) breakfast helps you not overeat later in the day,” says Marlene Schwartz.

One study has found many kids end up eating two breakfasts. People become worried that kids who eat breakfast both at home and at school might become overweight. In fact, Schwartz now says that’s not what her data(数据) have turned up.

Her group studied 600 middle school students. Over three years, students from 12 different schools were asked about their breakfast. About 34 to 44 percent of all students said they usually ate breakfast at home. Almost one in every six kids usually ate breakfast at school. About one in every 10 kids ate breakfast both at home and at school. Eating habits changed as the kids got older. For example, fifth graders were more likely to eat breakfast. But 22 percent of the seventh graders often didn’t eat breakfast. Surprisingly, at every age, kids who ate breakfast were less likely to be overweight. This was true even for those who ate breakfast at home and at school.

The study found no evidence(证据) of greater weight gain among students who ate double breakfasts.

Why should eating two breakfasts not lead to weight gain? The researchers don’t know yet. But one explanation may be that school breakfast is very healthy and controlled in size. So eating that along with the home breakfast may not be bad for most active and growing middle school students.

1. According to Paragraph 1, why do some people NOT want to eat breakfast?
A.Because they are worried about putting on weight.
B.Because they don’t consider it to be important.
C.Because they are tired of eating breakfast at school.
D.Because they don’t have time to eat breakfast.
2. Among 600 students that were studied, we can find that ___________.
A.most kids ate breakfast at schoolB.the kids eating breakfast twice were getting fat
C.more than half of the students didn’t eat breakfastD.seventh graders skipped breakfast more often than fifth graders
3. What does Schwartz think about eating two breakfasts?
A.All the girls should stop doing it.B.It can be good for most teenagers.
C.We should try our best to eat a second breakfast.D.Eating two breakfasts is just right for the boys.
4. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Eating breakfast twice will make people put on weight.
B.Giving up breakfast is more likely to help lose weight.
C.Having two breakfasts has little to do with being overweight.
D.Having breakfast at home can make kids stay healthy and thin.

【推荐3】Mapping out the future

Last summer, my parents and I took a drive to another state. Before we started on our road trip, we packed up the car with snacks, water, and music. Thankfully, we also packed our GPS. A few hours into the trip, we took a wrong turn. But our trusty GPS pulled up a map of the area and got us back or track in no time. It made me wonder: Who created maps in the first place? After some searching online, I learned that the people responsible for mapping out roads, mountains, oceans, and other places around the world are called cartographers. I did some reading about the career. Here’s what I found:

What does a cartographer do?

Cartographers, also called mapmakers, study and interpret(诠释)geographic information. They use this information to make detailed maps of places around the globe. Some of these maps are digital. They are often used in GPS systems. Other maps are printed in books. To do their work, cartographers put together information from many different places. They also use ground surveys. Some do ground surveys themselves. Most cartographers, however, rely on surveyors for this important information. Surveyors collect information for mapmaking. They measure land, air space, and water areas.

What does it take to be a cartographer?

Most cartographers have a bachelors(学士) degree. The degree might be in cartography, geography, or something similar. Students who are interested in becoming cartographers should learn as much as they can about geography. It also helps to take courses in maths and computer science.

With the rise of computer-based tools such as GPS systems, cartographers need stronger computer skills than they did in the past.

How much do cartographers make?

The average yearly salary for cartographers is $54,000. The lowest 10 percent earns less than $32,000. The top 10 percent cams more than $92,000.

________

In the U.S., job opportunities for cartographers are expected to grow. This is due to the increasing use of maps in the armed forces. Also, digital maps have increasingly become a main part of many GPS systems and Web sites.

Based on what I’ve read about cartographers, I’d say that their work is very important to a lot of people. Next time a map keeps me from getting lost. I’ll be sure to thank a cartographer!
