Breakfast is food for the brain. And it’s good even for people worrying about their weight. Middle school students who eat breakfast are more likely to have healthy weight than those who don’t eat breakfast. This is true even for students who eat two breakfasts — one at home and one at school. “Not skipping(跳过) breakfast helps you not overeat later in the day,” says Marlene Schwartz.
One study has found many kids end up eating two breakfasts. People become worried that kids who eat breakfast both at home and at school might become overweight. In fact, Schwartz now says that’s not what her data(数据) have turned up.
Her group studied 600 middle school students. Over three years, students from 12 different schools were asked about their breakfast. About 34 to 44 percent of all students said they usually ate breakfast at home. Almost one in every six kids usually ate breakfast at school. About one in every 10 kids ate breakfast both at home and at school. Eating habits changed as the kids got older. For example, fifth graders were more likely to eat breakfast. But 22 percent of the seventh graders often didn’t eat breakfast. Surprisingly, at every age, kids who ate breakfast were less likely to be overweight. This was true even for those who ate breakfast at home and at school.
The study found no evidence(证据) of greater weight gain among students who ate double breakfasts.
Why should eating two breakfasts not lead to weight gain? The researchers don’t know yet. But one explanation may be that school breakfast is very healthy and controlled in size. So eating that along with the home breakfast may not be bad for most active and growing middle school students.

What are ultra-processed foods (UPFs)? In short, you can’t re-create them in your kitchen. They are usually made in factories. They have long list of additives (添加剂)—some you may never have heard of.
The study looked into 281 other studies from 36 different countries and areas. It found that UPF lovers may strongly crave such food. If they stop eating it, they can feel very sad.
Why are UPFs addictive? Usually, natural foods are either high in carbohydrates (碳水化合物) or high in fat.
UPFs, however, are usually high in both. So, such foods can have more calories than natural foods.
Such foods also bring carbohydrates and fat to the gut (肠道) faster. Our body breaks down the fat from natural foods slowly. However, the body breaks down the fat in UPFs as soon as it reaches the stomach. This makes the brain create more dopamine (多巴胺). It makes you feel happier and want to eat more.
About 14 percent of adults and 12 percent of children are addicted to UPFs, said the study. They cause problems to people’s health around the world. Scientists are now calling for more attention to the UPFs.

The secret mostly lies in your ring finger (无名指) and index finger (食指). It can say a lot about what kind of person you are. This test only applies to (适用于) men. There are three types: A, B and C.
A. The ring finger is longer than the index finger.
We’re talking about handsome men here. They’re charming (有魅力的) and can get along well with everyone. Yet, they become angry easily like to attack and are quick to take risks. This also means that this type of person often makes more money than their colleagues (同事) with shorter ring fingers, though they all work hard.
B. The ring finger is shorter than the index finger.
Men with these hands are very confident and can even be a little narcissistic (自恋的). These people have no trouble being alone often and don’t like being disturbed. However, when it comes to love, they are less confident as they’re not the ones to make the first move and take the initiative.
C. The ring finger and the index finger are the same length.
Maybe this has said enough already. Men with these hands are good mediators (调解者), very faithful and loving. Everything is balanced with this type. They’re calm and everything seems to run smoothly, as if it’s all organized.

As the world's least-known place, Antarctica is of great interest to scientists around the world. During 30 years, China has sent many scientists to Antarctica. They mostly look for the resources under the icy land and do research about climate change and marine (海洋的) biology.
Antarctica is a place with fantastic views. However, life there is very hard. Food is one of the biggest problems. Frozen food which can be heated easily is people's daily food. Fresh vegetables are hard to grow in the cold weather.
Sleep is also difficult. In Antarctica, summer lasts from November to March. During this period, Antarctica points to the sun and receives sunlight 24 hours a day. In order to get some sleep, scientists cover the windows with black plastic cloth to create "night".
Working in Antarctica is dangerous, especially when meeting gale-force (七级以上的) winds. They can easily blow people away. So there are ropes that connect buildings of some research stations. People can hold these ropes to keep their balance in forceful winds.
What's more, communicating with others is difficult. Without cables and Internet in some research stations, two-way radios are the only tools to communicate. If people want to say hello to friends and relatives, they can use satellite phones.
Although it is challenging to work in Antarctica, scientists' passion to learn about this mysterious land will never end. It is hopeful that one day they will step every corner of this icy land.

The poem is about qingming, or Tomb-Sweeping Day, a Chinese holiday. People use this day to remember the dead ( 逝者). It falls on April 5 this year.
On this day, people go to the tombs (墓地) of their dead family members. They sweep (清扫) and clear away grass around the tombs. After that, they put flowers or food in front of the tombs. They hope the dead can enjoy them.

We know about the amazing help guide dogs give to blind people. And more recently, a new role has been found for the animals—working as therapy dogs (治疗犬) in universities.
Research by Washington State University in the US shows that spending time with a dog can help students who are feeling stressed. According to Patricia Pendry from the university, a study of 300 students has found that weekly hour-long periods with dogs brought to the university by professional trainers can make students at the high risk of failing exams or dropping out feel relaxed and accepted. The dogs help them to learn wisely and remember information well.
Another piece of research has also shown that touching animals can help make people less stressed, so it makes sense to introduce them into an environment where people are feeling stressed out. And by now, around 1,000 schools in the US have already used therapy pets. It is becoming more common in the UK. However, it’s hard to describe the influence of just having a dog lying down in the corner of a class.
Using dogs for therapy can also help dogs themselves. In Wales, Swansea University Students’ Union has used dogs they saved to help students relax between exams. Mistreated and abandoned (被遗弃的) dogs are also used to communicate with humans.
So if you’re a student who’s been working like a dog (but you still feel like you don’t have a dog’s chance in passing your exams), maybe introducing a four-legged friend into your life is just what you need.

Should students get paid for good grades? The following are some different opinions.
Sandy’s son is an 8th grader. She said she didn’t believe in paying kids for good grades. “They’re supposed to do well at school and always try their best.” she said.
10-year-old Lisa is a straight “A” student and she said the grade itself was the reward. “I think, ‘oh my goodness, I got an ‘A’. I’m still a straight ‘A’ student. I’m fine with that.”
Her father added, “She’s proud of what she achieves on her own. We don’t need to motivate (激励)her further. ”
However, Nikki said her son Seth, 13, did need the push. “For C’s we don’t pay anything, but for B’s we give him five dollars and for A’s we give him ten dollars.”she said.
“I wasn’t doing that well,” explained Seth, “and then they started paying me for grades and my grades improved quickly.”
While that might sound good, Sara, an expert, warns parents against paying kids for good grades. “Yes, we do see a change, but a lot of times students couldn’t be really motivated,” said Sara.
Mary, mother of 12-year-old David, said, “We agreed to pay him for doing his job of going to school. If he gets an ‘A’, we give him $10. If he gets a ‘B’, there’s nothing. If he gets a ‘C’, he owes us $10.”
“I like the idea because it motivates me to try harder,” said David.
Still, experts warn that paying kids like David who already do well, can decrease their motivation, their creativity and their performance.
So, before you put a price on that report card, try to think about it carefully.
