He listened to me quietly, then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you.” he said, “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”
Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.

“My brother Andrew has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?” “We don’t sell a miracle here, child. I’m sorry,” the salesman said with a smile.

Happy Rain on a Spring Night
①Good rain knows its time right;
It will fall when comes spring.
② With wind it steals in night;
Mute, it moistens each thing.

In boat a lantern looms.

The town’s heavy with blooms.

We were both in great anger. “Never set foot in this house again!” stormed Father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street.
The street lights were shining, causing rather sad-feeling. I wandered aimlessly.
A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree.
But now... I don't know whether it is because I have grown up or because Dad is getting old. We differ in our ways of thinking. He always puts his opinions and codes of behaviour on me. Whenever I do something wrong, he never admits it. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.
I wandered in the streets, without a destination in mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived, I saw that the light was still on.
I thought to myself: "Is Father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?"
In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, Dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. I can't stand his outrageous (蛮横的) words: "I can't throw you away, let alone these old papers?"
All the lights were off except Father's.
Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn't know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any mercy or any moments of regret. After an argument he has the habit of creeping up (悄悄来到) in my sleep and then tucking me underneath the covers.
This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.
The light was still on. "Am I wrong?" I whispered, maybe... With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist (存在) at all. Love---is second to none.

Usually, your body will tell you when you are angry. For example, you breathe faster, your face turns red, and you may want to break something or hit someone, but sometimes, you hide (隐藏) your anger. For example, you may hide it in your heart. The problem is that if you do this, you may get a headache or your stomach may hurt.
In fact, it’s not good to hide your anger, and it’s normal for you to get angry sometimes. But anger must be let out in the right way, without hurting others or yourself.
When you get angry, you can talk about it with other people. One morning I carried the chair with me and went into the first shop, but the man wouldn’t look at my chair. The second shop was just the same, and the third and the fourth — so I decided that my way must be wrong.
I entered the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, “Would you like to buy a chair?” He looked it over carefully and said, “Yes, not a bad chair. How much do you want for it, sir?”“Twenty pounds,” I said. “OK, I’ll give you twenty pounds.” he said. “It’s got a broken leg,” I said. “Yes, I saw that, it’s nothing.” he said.
Everything was going according to my plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it?” I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done.” he said. “I’ll buy it,” I said. “What do you mean? You’ve just sold it to me,” he said. “Yes, I know but I’ve changed my mind. I am sorry. I’ll give you twenty-seven pounds for it.” I said.
“You must be crazy,” he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. “I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.”
“You’re right,” I said. “And what would you do if I walked in and said, “Would you repair this chair for me?”
“I wouldn’t agree to do it,” he said. “We don’t do repairs, not enough money in it. But I’ll repair this for you. Shall we say for five pounds?” He was a very nice man.

Nicklen lay down on the ice to get a better photo. The swimming bear climbed onto an ice floe (浮冰). Unluckily, it broke, and the bear fell back into the water. The polar bear couldn’t find a meal, and had to swim farther away to find food.
Polar bears need ice to hunt seals (猎取海豹)—their favourite meal. They stand on the ice floes, and wait for the seals to come up for air. However, because of global warming (全球变暖), Arctic temperatures are rising and polar ice is melting (融化). As polar ice melts, polar bears have to swim farther to find ice floes. Sometimes, bears have to swim more than 200 kilometres to find an ice floe. Some bears cannot swim that far and, sadly, they die in the water.
On his last trip, Nickden saw three polar bear bodies. Before global warming influences the Arctic, a dead polar bear is hardly seen. Wildlife experts (野生动物专家) think that global warming will have a terrible influence on polar bears. In the future, polar ice will continue to melt. Some scientists believe that about two﹣thirds of the world’s polar bears will disappear by 2050.

Researchers also found that man who wear pink are more likely to get praise from female colleagues and more confident in the office.
A typical pink shirt wearer earns $1,000 more a year than those who choose other colors, the survey of 1,500 male office workers found. Men who wear pink are also twice as likely to have a master’s degree as those who favor white shirts, with one in ten pink shirt wearers having a PHD.
Stephanie Thiers-Ratcliffe, international Marketing Manager for Cotton USA, which took charge of the study, said, “Pink is a color more men have been embracing recently and it is encouraging that they are not afraid to experiment with brighter colors. We spend most of our days at work and it is good for company standard and our own confidence to remain smart, but that doesn’t mean that you have to be boring.”
The report also found men who favor green shirts are most likely(可能) to be late for work, while white shirt fans are the most punctual(准时的). And if you are trying for a promotion, then it is best to dress in a purple shirt. In the last five years men who favor purple shirts have had the most pay rises, so it is no wonder that one in twenty of them drives a car worth $20,000 or more.
