Students from Taizhou Middle School, Jiangsu Province, experience farming during their labor course. As we all know, the life skills like cooking and painting are important and should be taught as part of labor education.
On June 3, 2020, the Ministry of Education(MOE)(教育部) gave a document showing the new curriculum (方案) for high schools across the country. Labor education includes housework, school labor and community voluntary services.
“Labor education must be carried out with the purpose to make the right view of the world, life and values and develop an interest in doing housework,” said Vice-Minister of Education Zheng Fuzhi.
According to China Youth Daily, the labor course will take six credits(学分)—the same as foreign language and physics.Voluntary service, as part of labor education, will take two credits. The MOE also asks schools to make sure 40 hours of voluntary service during the full three school years.
According to Xinhua, adding labor education was out of care that the country’s young people do too little housework and that they think labor jobs aren’t important. Because of a lot of school pressure, most schools pay more attention to the course of education and parents may think that doing housework will waste their kids’ time.
According to a survey, middle school students in China only spend 12 minutes a day on housework, compared with 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France.
However, doing housework does not take young people’s attention away. Instead, it can help them to develop a strong working spirit, according to Julie Lythcott-Haims, the writer of How to Raise an Adult. “The earlier you started, the better...”, she said.
1. When did the MOE give a document to show the new curriculum for high schools?2. How many credits will voluntary service take?
3. Why do schools pay more attention to the course of education?
4. Who spend the least time on housework according to the survey in the passage?
5. What does Julie Lythcott-Haims think of doing housework?

“Students’physical conditions are quite different after staying at home for a long time,” said Wang Lifang, a PE teacher at this school. “So we start with easier activities such as dancing, fun games, sit-ups and so on to protect students from being hurt while they are exercising.”
Students in the school can choose the sports which fit them well according to the following “PRE” scale (主观疲劳量表), with the teachers’suggestions of choosing the level below 5 or 6. “If you like doing exercise, any time is the best time. Your school days should be the best and happiest days of your life. How can you get the most from them, and be sure you don’t waste (浪费) this great chance to learn?
Be active (积极) at school. Don’t say things are difficult. Take interest in school life and your school subjects. Join lots of activities. Put up your hands quickly in class. Go around the school with a big smile. Teachers cannot make everything enjoyable.
Keep healthy. If you don’t eat a good breakfast, you will be thinking about food in class. If you go to bed late and don’t have enough sleep, you will feel tired in class. Play enough sports every day to keep your body strong.
Face the problem. Don’t say you will do things tomorrow. If you get behind the class, it is very difficult to get back in front. You cannot finish the race if you rest all the time. Everyone fails (失败) some exams, loses some matches and has a bad day. Don’t forget to ask for help. You are young, and no one thinks you must do everything quite well!
Spend the weekends. Don’t waste time lying in bed on Saturday or Sunday morning. Go and play sports, relax in the park, learn to play the piano and so on. If you don’t want to go out, you can read a book, practice English or help your mum do some cleaning or cooking.
Follow our advice, and have a happy school life!

The reason why people like “Survival Holidays” is that they think being close to nature is good for children. Many children in big cities spend all time watching TV and playing computer games. “Survival Holidays” gives them an important change.
Is “Survival Holidays” a wonderful idea? Maybe it is. Children need more free time to play. They need to be left on their own, without adults disturbing (打扰) them. Parents care too much about their children. They like to see the children being busy with activities that are controlled by adults, but children don’t know what to do when they are in danger. Even something like crossing a small river seems to be a hard challenge. Children are not comfortable with danger. Even small danger like getting their feet wet or falling down seems very terrible to them.
Many people think the survival activities are good for children. Even years later, they will still remember what they have learned. Some have learned to stay calm in different times. Some have learned how to keep safe. Others have learned how to work in a team. All these skills will help them a lot in their lives.

How many hours do kids do the chores at home every day? |
In fact, helping at home is a universal thing. Everyone in the family should play a part in doing the chores.

Labor (劳动) education has become more and more important in recent years. It is very close to our lives.
As students, doing housework is really helpful for us. But some people think that students only need to study hard and should not waste time doing housework. I think this idea is wrong. Here are my reasons.
First, teachers often ask students to clean the classroom at school. This is because what the school teaches is not only knowledge (知识), but also how to adapt to (适应) society. The same is true for the family. Doing housework shows duty towards the family.
Second, doing housework can help us develop a hard-working spirit and help us learn some labor skills. In the future, these will be helpful to us.
Finally, the purpose (目的) of getting knowledge is to learn the skills we will need in the future. The more skills students have, the better they will be. No one wants to be useless in the society.
President Xi Jinping once said, “The people’s life lies in hard work, and hard work leads to prosperity (繁荣).” The same is true for students. Labor education is also the first test for students to enter society.

Chores were not popular at my house. My children didn’t like to do chores. They watched TV all the time, but they hardly ever helped me do chores. As a mother, I knew I had to do something. A year ago, I made a game called “The Endless Chore Game”. It is really great. Here is how the game works.
I make a card with forty squares (方框), and I write a different chore in each square. These chores can be easy and interesting like making snacks. Then we roll (摇动) the dice (骰子) to decide what chores we have to do. The card also has a few squares with fun things, like watching TV and singing. If you are lucky, you can watch TV when the others are doing the chores.
My son likes the game very much. He goes to the kitchen happily every morning to do the game. ________
