As climate change gets worse, global temperatures increase, and so does the risk of wildfires. A recent report from the United Nations shows that wildfires are becoming more common and severe. Wildfires have caused many problems across countries. These fires destroy (毁坏) homes and businesses, take lives and also damage the environment.
A wildfire in New Mexico, a state in the southwestern US, burned for nearly two months in 2022, damaging more than 1,275 km2 of land—an area about the size of the city of Los Angeles. Wildfires have created seasonal pollution in the northwestern US. Between 2002 and 2018, carbon monoxide (一氧化碳) levels increased every year for the month of August in the area.
In 2019 and 2020, Australian wildfires filled the air with deadly clouds of smoke and killed thousands of koalas. Around 437,000 people had to take in air with a PM2.5 concentration (浓度) of at least 25 mg/cm3 of air. That’s more than the 15 mg/cm3 of air that the World Health Organization (WHO) considers acceptable.
In the last 10 years, the total number of forest fires in China every year has increased to more than 2,000 cases. Wildfires lead to great loss of animals, forests and people. What’s worse, some animals become endangered and some people have to move to other places to live. Greater Hinggan Mountains (大兴安岭) is one of the important forestry places in China. The government uses mountain watchtowers, forest cameras and aerial drones (无人机) to prevent forest fires in summer.

【推荐2】What do different countries do to keep students safe?
Japan
At public primary schools in Japan, earthquake training are held once a month. They teach students safety tips for earthquakes. Regular training helps students escape from earthquake-stricken areas without causing any stampedes (踩踏).
Australia
Most students in Australia take first-aid courses at school. They learn basic first-aid knowledge in the class, such as how to call an ambulance (救护车) and what to do when someone is hurt. The government is trying to make all kids take such courses.
US
Most US school buildings have fire escapes. A fire escape has platforms (平台) with stairs and ladders (梯子) at each floor of a building. They are usually made of steel and built outside of the building. People can get to the fire escape through a special fire-exit door or through a window. It is not a good idea to jump out of a window from higher than two floors. You may hurt yourself.

A forest fire in south western China was under control. The fire killed 31 people. Among the victims, 27 were firefighters and four were local people.
The fire broke out on the evening of March 30 in Muli County(县), in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture Sichuan. It began at a remote place in the tree—covered mountains at an altitude of about 3, 800 meters. The fire burned across 20 hectares as bad terrain(地形)—including the thick forest and limited water-stopped people from putting out the fire.
Following the fire in Sichuan, China issued a red alert, which is the highest level, for forest fire risks in dry northern and southwestern places. This was the first time since March 2016 that the country had issued a red alert for forest fires.
Forest fires, also called wildfires, are a worldwide problem. Wildfires are uncontrolled and can be caused by different types of weather, dry brush and wind. They burn land by the hectares and can take over everything along the way in just a few minutes.
Wildfires are either started accidentally by humans—such as a burning cigarette—or by natural causes like lightning. But these events don’t have a main effect on the scale(规模)of the fire. The warm climate from increasing greenhouse gas emissions(排放)is increasing. Studies show that over the past many years, the umber of wildfires has increased.
1. How many firefighters died in the fire in Liangshan?A.31 | B.27 | C.3 | D.1500 |

They will stay in space for six months. It is the eighth time for Chinese to visit space after Yang Liwei went as the first Chinese 18 years ago. These special “visitors” can take fantastic photos in space, just like taking trips there. Can common people go to visit space like them? The answer is “yes”.
On September 15, 2021, Space X sent four common people into space. In July, 70-year-old British billionaire (亿万富翁) Richard Branson, and 57-year-old American billionaire Jeff Bezos, both flew into space. But some think these trips are for the super rich. With the sky-high prices, most common people should give up their space dreams, so it is impossible for us to take such a trip. But the Japanese flight engineer(航空工程师)YANAGIDA KUNIO believes the price will come down.
Anyway, even we can’t have a space trip now, we have been able to have a science class from space. The woman astronaut Wang Yaping gave us a science class on December 9th 2021, just as she did eight years ago. That was great fun. We will also be able to enjoy a space movie. A Russian film team stayed on the International Space Station from October 5th to 16th 2021, to film the movie Challenge. It’s the first time a movie was filmed in space.

For example, how about “yarn bombing”? What’s that? Maybe you have heard of knitting(编织) to make sweaters, scarves, gloves and other things. With yarn bombing, people knit different kinds of things, like sweaters for trees or hats for stones in the park. It’s the latest form of artwork. In some cities, people are even paying knitters to decorate public places with their art. Some call it “Knitting Graffiti(涂鸦),” but unlike other forms of graffiti, it is easy to take away, and it doesn’t destroy anything.
Do you like those TV shows in which the police use science to solve crimes? If you do, you can take up “forensic science” as a hobby. That’s the science used to investigate(调查)crimes. You can get a set of at-home fingerprint tools and find out who is taking cookies from the cookie box or perhaps who is reading your secret diary.
Finally, here’s a hobby for those who want to have fun and make a little money. It’s called “upcycling”. You’ve heard of recycling-you put things like glass, paper and plastic in special boxes so the materials can be used again. Upcyclers take old things and make them into new things. Sometimes they can even sell the things they make. For example, you can take an old book bag, ▲ and decorate it. It will look like a cool new bag. There’s even a magazine called Upcycle that is full of ideas. All you need for this is an old thing and a good imagination.
So look around for a new and interesting hobby. Then when someone asks you the question “What’s your hobby?” you can give them an answer that they’ve never heard before.
1. What do you need if you want to know who read your diary?A.Rich imagination. | B.Science magazines. | C.Knitting tools. | D.Fingerprint tools. |

Wang’s space dream started in 2003, when China sent its first astronaut Yang Liwei into space. At that time, Wang was a pilot in the Chinese army. After having safe flights for 1,600 hours over nine years, Wang was a strong candidate(候选人)to become an astronaut in 2010. She pushed herself hard, getting the same training as men. “The space environment won’t change because you are a woman,” she told Xinhua.
The hardest part is the high-G training. Sitting in a spinning(旋转的)machine, Wang would become blind for a while because her brain was short of blood. “There’s a red button(按钮)”, said Wang. “If you can’t stand it, you can press it to stop.” But Wang never used it. “There is no such red button in my heart.” That strong spirit finally made her dream come true in 2013. She joined the team for the Shenzhou X mission(任务).
Wang said that as astronauts, women have their own advantages(优势). “Women may be more patient and can better deal with loneliness. Women’s hearts are also easier to adapt to the weightless environment, making them more suitable for long-term missions.”
Wang Yaping went a long way before becoming the first woman to enter the Tiangong space station. She sets a good example for all women who dream of going to space.
