If you have no special plans for your summer holidays, why not spend your time helping others?
Don’t listen to people who say the young people today often think only of themselves. It’s not true at all. More and more people in the USA volunteer to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don’t do it for money. Here are some of their stories.
⚫ Alice Hamilton, 17
I’m going to help the Forest Center build new hiking paths(路)in the mountains. It’s going to be terrific—I’ll spend the whole summer living in the tent and breathing the clean mountain air. I’m going to sleep under the stars. It’ll be a nice sport, and I’ll be able to do something good at the same time.
⚫ Jason Moore, 18
This summer, I’m going to volunteer with Special House Program. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to families that are not very rich. They’ll teach me what to do.
⚫ Trish Anderson, 16
I’m going to teach kids who have trouble reading. I’ll work for a program called Reading for Life. Every day, I’m going to help kids choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher and I love children and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me.

When I was a teenager, I volunteered to pass out water at a local race. I was so excited to see all the different runners who passed by and quickly took a cup of water. Some ran past, some walked past and a few wheeled past. I saw so many types of people doing it. I thought maybe I could do it, too! The next year I decided to run for the race, but I had little running practice. I just wanted to finish.
On the day of the race, it was terribly hot. After running for about 5 miles, I was thinking, “I must be crazy. Why did I do this? What was I thinking?” And at one moment, I said to myself, “I am never doing this again!” That first 10 km race was quite an experience. I jogged, I walked, I jogged and walked. At times, I didn’t know if I could finish. Near the end, a 70-year-old man ran past me, very fast, and I felt a little embarrassed that I was more than 50 years younger than he and I couldn’t even keep up with him. But then I realized something. He was running his race and I was running mine. How often in life do we compare ourselves to others when we really shouldn’t? I decided that I would not give up on running races, and that one day I would be one of those 70-year-old men who were still running.
As I crossed the finishing line, I was proud of myself. I didn’t regret having such an experience.

These days, a video of an 86-year-old man is hot online. In the video, Grandpa Kang is wearing colorful clothes—from a pink jacket to a green T-shirt to blue trousers. He is keeping up with the fashion trend (潮流) in 2023—dopamine (多巴胺) dressing. And, you know, dopamine dressing is more than just a colorful trend.
Our brains produce a chemical called “dopamine” when we do things that make us happy. And when we wear colorful clothes, our brains produce dopamine, too! So, dopamine dressing is a way of dressing that can bring happiness to the wearer through bright and colorful clothes. Fashion psychologist (心理学家) Dawn Karen came up with the term “dopamine dressing” in one of her books. She believes that wearing colorful clothes might make people look great and feel good at the same time.
Dopamine dressing is connected with color psychology. Bright colors often make people feel more cheerful and confident. For example, when people say “blue”, we may think of the blue sky or sea. The color blue makes us feel peaceful. Green, the color of nature, makes us feel hopeful. But colors like black, white and gray may make us feel bored sometimes.
Now, more and more people are taking this style to fight back bad feelings. When you choose clothes, you don’t need too many colors. You can just try one or two colorful pieces at a time. For example, you can try a colorful T-shirt, a funny hat or a pair of colorful shoes.
Tired of white or black clothes? Wear bright colors and let your happiness take flight!
