Brownie and Spotty were neighbor dogs. They loved each other and played together so often that they had made a path through the grass between their houses.
One evening, Brownie’s family noticed that Brownie hadn’t come home. They went out to look for him but with no success. Brownie didn’t appear the next day, and by the next week, he was still missing.
Spotty went to Brownie’s house on his own. He barked loudly. But Brownie’s family was too busy to care about him. Finally, one morning Spotty refused to take no for an answer. He followed Ted, Brownie’s owner, everywhere he went. He barked, then ran toward a nearby empty lot and looked back, as if to say, “Follow me!”
Ted followed the dog across the empty lot. The little dog took the man to a tree a half mile from the house. There Ted found Brownie alive. One of his legs was caught in a trap(老鼠夹子). Ted wished he had come earlier.
Then Ted noticed something amazing. In a circle around the injured dog, he saw a lot of dog food. It was the remains of lots of meals. Spotty had been visiting Brownie every day. He had stayed with Brownie to protect him, hugging him at night to keep him warm and nuzzling(用鼻子安抚) him to keep his spirits up.

Lei Feng was a soldier in the People’s Liberation Army. He died in 1962, aged 22. His short life was filled with “selfless(无私的)service for the people”, reported China Daily.
As a non-Chinese person, I learned about Lei Feng once I came to China. The lesson was quite unforgettable.
One day, I was riding my bicycle down the street and a tire burst(车胎爆裂). A passerby asked if I needed any help. He kindly guided me to a nearby bike stand for repair. Once we got there, I thanked him and asked what his name was in Chinese. He said, “I’m Lei Feng.” Not knowing who Lei Feng was, I replied,” Well, thank you, Lei Feng.” He and the others at the bike repair stand began laughing. I stood there confused(困惑的). Why were they all laughing?
A few months later, our Chinese teacher told us about Lei Feng, this hero of small acts of kindness and community spirit. I remembered the man who helped me with my bicycle. Then it was my turn to laugh.
After this, I began to notice Lei Feng’s image(形象)on cultural souvenirs(纪念品)in local tourist shops. We need people to lend a hand and show the “Lei Feng spirit” now more than ever.

The Venus flytrap is a very strange plant. It grows in dry parts of the United States. Its leaves are like the pages of a book. They can open and close very quickly. Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If a fly touches one of the hairs, the leaf closes quickly. The fly cannot get out. In about half an hour, the leaf presses the fly until it is dead. Then, the plant covers the fly. Slowly, the plant eats the fly.
Why do plants do it? Most plants get what they need from the sun, the air and the ground. In some places, the ground is very poor. It doesn’t have all these important things, especially nitrogen(氮). I usually got a little unhappy and kept asking him why. He always answered, “Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish”, I remember being even more upset then, because “I’m not a fish!” I didn’t know how to think like a fish. Besides, how could what I think change what a fish does?
As I got a little older, I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the shallow water is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in sunlight than in the shadow. Yet, fish don’t have any eyelids and the sun hurts their eyes... The more I understood fish, the better I became at finding and catching them.
When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like salesmen.” But it didn’t completely make sense. My dad never once said, “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to do long-term business with people much older and richer than me, I slowly learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following...

We had classes in the mornings and the evenings were filled with fun activities. We did have a break in the afternoons, however. One afternoon, my friend Claude and I found an old basketball. We went to an outdoor basketball court(球场)for a game of one-on-one.
At the time, Claude was taller than me. He was also better at basketball. I fell behind fast. I was not willing to lose. So I drove hard to the basket, but I missed it! The ball bounced back(弹回)and I jumped up to catch it. Just as I was about to catch it, I saw an elbow(肘)above my face. As Claude caught the ball, his elbow came down hard, right into my eye. I saw stars everywhere. The pain was terrible. Claude kept saying “sorry” over and over. I laughed through the pain.
I spent the next few days walking around with a black eye, but it was worth it. For years afterward, I got a laugh whenever I told the story and joked about Claude’s elbows of death. In this life, we all get an elbow to the eye sometimes. Our plans fail. Things work against us. Our ups become downs. When this happens, it’s best to face it with laughter and forgiveness.
