Do you ever speak with your mouth full of food? Do you talk on the phone loudly when you are on the bus? If you do, then perhaps you should take Etiquette(礼仪)and Social Skills classes. These classes will teach you good manners(礼仪)and how to behave(表现得体)in social situations.

A person who teaches classes like these is Maggie at Dongfang School, and her students are aged between six and twelve years old. She thinks this is the best time to teach kids. “At this age they are very easy to teach,” Maggie says. “When they get older, its harder for them to break bad habits. Children at this age want to be courteous. You can see that they’re trying.”

Maggie teaches the children how to speak on the phone and how to walk, as well as telling them about table manners. These classes have become popular because parents want well-mannered children but they are too busy to teach manners at home.

So, what do the children actually think of these classes? The classes have been popular with most of the children and their teachers at school have noticed that they are treating(对待)each other with more respect(尊重). They also feel the skills they have learned will be useful to them in the future.

Maggie believes that such skills can be life-changing. “We’ll have more and more well-mannered children. Slowly our world will become better and better.”

In July 2021, China introduced the “double reduction(双减)” policy.     1     According to the policy, children below the third grade will not have homework anymore. It should take no more than 90 minutes for junior high school students to finish their homework.

“Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old girl Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks anymore.     2

According to Shen, students have enough time to learn new knowledge now. “We can learn from real life because our teachers are giving us more chances to do experiments.” said Shen.

For 13-year-old boy Zhang Hangming from Tianjin, the best thing about “double reduction” is the increased time in after-school activities. “    3     I have joined a group called leadership development where I can learn all kinds of skills,” said Zhang.

Both Shen and Zhang find there are fewer exams now.     4     “Exams push me to study harder.     5    ” Zhang said. “Some students now spend more time having fun when their homework is finished early. But if you use all the free time to relax, you might fall behind other students.” Shen said.

文章大意:本文通过举例来告诉我们在美国10岁到13岁的青少年会通过什么方式赚钱,并介绍了青少年通过工作赚钱所带来的好处。

【推荐2】If you live in the United States, the law says you can’t have a full-time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer you can work 40 hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can’t earn(赚)your own money? Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things.

Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people’s yards. Lena, 13, makes money by knitting (织) dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbors, and Reisa said she had started taking art classes and showing her work to people. People have asked her to draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 13, writes articles for different magazines!

Earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you are learning the skills you will need to succeed in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology (技术) and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning it; however, when you make your own money, you don’t have to depend on someone else. The five dollars that you earn will probably make you feel a lot better in your hand than the twenty dollars you ask for.

Children are natural scientists, very interested in the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy: there’s no need for a lot scientific terms(形式)or modern labs(实验室).     1

Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-old children to talk about science as a job. The children asked me “textbook questions” about schooling, the money I got and whether I liked my job.     2     Finally I said, "Now that we've finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?" After a long wait, a boy put up his hand, "Have you ever seen a rabbit eat? When I try eating grass like that, I get ill. Why?" This began a lot of questions that lasted nearly two hours.

Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, many teachers usually wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think.     3

Thirdly, watch your language. When the child is having a science discussion, don’t jump in with “That’s right" or "Very good". These words work well when it comes to encouraging a child to help others.     4     Instead, keep things going by saying, “That’s interesting” or “I’ve never thought of it that way before", or coming up with more questions or ideas.

Lastly, show; don't tell.     5     And they’ll understand why you want them to wash before dinner....

A.But in talking about science, these words make a child think that the discussion is over.
B.Let children look at their hands through a microscope(显微镜)
C.You only have to share your children’s interests.
D.When I finished answering, we sat facing each other quietly.
E.When teachers increase their "wait time" to three seconds or more, children give better answers.
F.Don't let children always do their homework.
