During the summer holiday, some students might have been busy with traveling, summer camps and all kinds of courses. But a special group of Chinese middle school students decided to taste the hardship of life outside school.
Twelve students in a big city sold vegetables at a local market together. Within 12 days, they made more than 1,500 yuan.
Among them, the oldest is 21 years old, while the youngest is just 10. They are all cousins in a big family and eight of them are from rural areas.
“Compared to traveling, such social practice connects us and makes us learn how tough our parents are,” said Dalin, 18, to the City Morning Post. Dalin, a senior high graduate, and her 12-year-old brother Xiaolin came up with the idea.
They learned to work hard to sell their veggies. Every morning they had to wake up at 3 o’clock. Some of them went to the farmer’s market to buy vegetables. Some of them went to the local market to take up a temporary stall(临时摊位). To lower the cost, they learned to bargain(讲价)with the sellers.
At about 6:30 a.m., they began to sell vegetables. They peddled(吆喝)loudly to attract customers. After several days, they got some experience, too.
For example, it was better to put vegetables in order and bigger ones on top. When the vegetables are too heavy, they should give customers an extra plastic bag.
When they finally packed up and went home, they had a small meeting. Everyone took notes and shared their feelings.
“We are tired,” said Dalin, “But we gained a lot.”

Growing up in Singapore and spending a number of years in Britain, I have found that the way we spend Sundays is different in both countries.
“Sun”-day: Friend or enemy?
One can easily tell Sundays in Singapore from those in Britain by looking at the relationships each country has with the sun.
Singapore is a tropical(热带的)island with two seasons: rainy and sunny. When it rains, it’s hot. When it shines, it burns. This is why Singaporeans prefer to spend their time indoors. These days, indoor activities like trampolining(蹦床)are getting popular among young people. We don’t hate the sun, but we don’t like it very much, either.
In Britain, however, sunny days are few and people try to make use of them as much as they can. While I was making my way to the library one Sunday, I met a group of college students outside, bathing in the sun as they wore their beach clothes. I wish I could have joined them.
Sunday roast
This is one of the most British things about Britain. It happens every weekend, usually in the late afternoon. It is a meal with roasted meat, roasted potatoes and roasted or boiled vegetables.
Of course, we eat lunch and dinner in Singapore on Sunday. But the “British Sunday roast” isn’t just about the food. It’s also a time to get together with family and friends.

In the latest issue (期) of Youth magazine, the mother shared the school advice she gave her daughters with young people across the country.
“I’ve told my daughters many times that I don’t want them to choose a name,” the mother said. “I don’t want them to think, ‘Oh, I should go to these top schools.’ We live in a country with hundreds of excellent universities. So the first question is: what’s going to work for me?”
“When it was time to prepare for picking schools, nobody around me believed I could get into Xiamen University. But through hard work I finally made it,” she continued. “So, my second piece of advice is: believe in yourself, no matter what other people might say. Once your goal is set, you only need to try your best to make it come true.”
“The last piece of advice is not to be worried even if your dreams don’t come true. As I’ve said above, there are so many good universities out there. So it’s important for everybody to understand that you can always find a university that gives you a great education.”

The University of Illinois in the United States has a project called SAWBO—Scientific Animations without Borders. It produces educational videos that can be downloaded to cell phones. The goal is to help people in developing countries improve their lives.
One video shows farmers how to make a natural insecticide from neem seeds(种子) to prevent insect damage to crops. The process starts with sorting and drying the neem fruits. Then let the fruit dry in the sun for about three or four days, until they become brown. Using a mortar(碾槌) and stick, the fruits are slightly pounded to remove the shells from the fruits without breaking the seed inside.
The videos use computer animation(动画). Some of the animated characters are a little funny looking-like a farmer with a long nose. But the subjects are serious, including a health video on preventing cholera(霍乱). Team member Francisco Seufferheld says the information in the videos is meant to be quickly understood. He says, “In two minutes, we can explain a complicated idea.”
The researchers tested the seven-minute video on seven mobile phones. They wanted to see if people would share the video using Bluetooth wireless technology. With Bluetooth, files can be passed to a nearby phone even if neither phone is connected to the Internet. As a result, in one month, the video had spread to one hundred eighteen people in fifty different villages. “This is just unbelievable effect,” said Francisco Seufferheld.
The team has made a few videos so far. These are available in a total of eighty languages, dialects and accents. Professor Barry Pittendrigh says there are plans for more videos later this year.

The policy calls for reducing homework and after-school classes. According to the policy, children below the third grade will not have homework anymore. It should take no more than 90 minutes for junior high school students to finish their homework. After-school training institutions(校外培训机构)are not allowed to offer extra education courses or advanced(超前的)teaching on weekends, holidays or during winter and summer vacations. One month has passed since the new semester began. How do students feel about this new policy?
“Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks anymore. The exercises are mainly from the textbook.”

According to Shen, students have enough time to process new knowledge now. “Our teachers are also giving us more chances to do experiments and learn from real life,” said Shen. “For example, we went to research earthworms(蚯蚓)in a field during a biology class. This is a much better way to learn things than just hitting the books.”
For 13-year-old Zhang Hangming from Tianjin, the best thing about “double reduction” is the increased time in after-school activities. “We can now spend more time taking part in clubs and activities, such as dancing, volleyball and drama. I have joined a group called “leadership development” where I can learn all kinds of skills beyond schoolwork,” said Zhang.
Both Shen and Zhang find there are fewer exams now. But they think it’s not necessarily a good thing. “Exams push me to study harder. Each exam shows my progress as well as my weak points,” Zhang said.
Shen also pointed out that when burden is lightened, self-discipline(自律) becomes the key. “Some students now spend more time having fun when homework is finished early. But if you use all the free time to relax, you might fall behind other students,” he said. “

Then we put everything into the car and drive to the woods(树林). We look for a place for campers and look for a good place for our tent. The place should have a lot of moving air. This will keep some insects away. High land with water on both sides of it is good. Then we put up our tent. We put everything into the tent, and we are ready for fun. We can do many things. We can swim in the lake, walk in the woods, climb a mountain, row a boat or go fishing.
In the evening, we come back to the tent. We build a big fire because it can keep the insects away. We sit around the fire and talk. We may tell interesting stories or we may sing songs. At night we lie down on the grass. We can look up at the stars. It is a busy day, so we try to go to sleep early. Everything is dark. Everything is quiet. She was very good at making sweet cupcakes and delicious cookies. But this year, the things Julia’s mom brought were not so delicious. She brought some pencils. Why? Because Julia’s school has made a new rule that the sweet treats(甜点) are not allowed(允许) at school parties.
Julia’s school is not the only school to ban(禁止) the sweet treats. Some other schools around the country have done the same thing. Some American experts think that fewer sweets will be good for kids’ health. One third of American kids are overweight. Being overweight may lead to serious health problems.
Of course, most kids don’t like this rule. They say, “What’s fun about a party if there are no cupcakes?” And many parents also dislike the rule. “I want my kids to be healthy.” says one of the parents. “But eating the birthday cake is an important tradition.
